It may well be a quiet, unhurried joy, or in another way: the gloom and reluctance of the beginning of winter. There may be completely different thoughts in his head, and we can only guess what they are.
A large space in the picture is occupied by the road. It is wide and quite massive. On each side there are houses painted yellow-gray. They are all similar to one another, but there is one difference - they are all different sizes. From small to large - this is how we see this change on the right side of the road. At the end there are more and more houses, and the road, which nicely sheltered them all, gradually goes down. The whole of it and the roofs of the houses are covered with a layer of white snow.
If you look closely, on the left side of the picture you can see a balcony on which a person is standing. He seems, like that boy, to be busy looking at the weather outside.
Below this balcony there is a telephone booth, and inside it there is a mysterious silhouette calling on the phone.
The withered, dry leaves that have lasted since the beginning of autumn are still flying off the trees. Under this preserved tree stands a dog, seemingly frozen.
In general, everything in this picture seems to be sleeping and not moving, except for the three rejoicing girls and the snow. This painting brings peace filled with silence. Everything around is silent and slow.
The city is permeated with lifelessness in its outlying streets. Everywhere seems to be light, but at the same time dark, since the sky still gives the picture a little darkness.
Looking at the picture, mixed feelings appear: both joy and sadness. Maybe the artist was trying to convey something to us, or maybe, on the contrary, he simply painted as he felt.

Igor Aleksandrovich Popov (1927-1999) - Soviet painter, People's Artist of the RSFSR. The master has many wonderful works to his credit. The painting “First Snow” is one of those thanks to which many people know this artist or met him for the first time. This painting has become so famous that today they write stories and essays based on it in school.
In the picture we can see a street of a small provincial town. On both sides of the snowy road there are low yellow houses. The street is drawn in such a way that the viewer involuntarily travels with his gaze to the very end. However, the main element of the picture is the foreground.
No one can rejoice at the first snow more than children. Snow replaces everyone's tired autumn. Children enjoy winter, the crunchy snow under their feet, making snowmen, playing snowballs, sledding, skiing and enjoying other winter activities.
In the foreground we can see three girls who are so happy about the transformed nature that they could not resist and started dancing. Looking at them lifts your spirits, so you want to sincerely enjoy an ordinary winter day. The girls are dancing, jumping up and down, waving their arms. It seems that if you get into the picture, you can hear their cheerful girlish exclamations.
A little behind the group of children there is a dog standing in the snow. She froze, as if not understanding what was happening. Just yesterday she was walking around the puddles, and today everything around is white and white and with her paws she steps on a soft but cold blanket.
A little further down the street you can see the figure of a man. The figure froze at the entrance and looks at the snow-covered surroundings. The man stands motionless, straight, but in his pose you can also feel admiration and pleasure from the coming winter.
On the left, in the window opening on the second floor of the building, you can see the figure of a girl. Seeing that the world outside the window had changed, she went out onto the balcony to explore the beauty of the snowy landscape, and also admire how other girls, perhaps her friends or classmates, were frolicking under the windows.
Despite the fact that the picture is painted in rather dim and dull colors, it evokes only positive feelings. Such muted tones allow the viewer to observe this picture not with the usual admiration, but with a certain amount of sadness or nostalgia.

I. Popov
Some of the artist Igor Popov’s paintings were devoted to compositions related to city life; the artist loved to paint such scenes as “Fishermen of Galich”, “Our Yard”, “Market Day” and many others.
One of the similar compositions is Popov’s painting First Snow, painted in a somewhat limited color palette, however, the work reflects a feeling of joy and fully conveys the spirit of life of a small snow-covered town.
The author's compositional decision was a top view, perhaps this is the view from the window where the artist temporarily lived and observed a similar scene that inspired him to paint the picture after the next first snow fell. When creating this compositional solution, the artist was attracted by the contrasting combination of shades of pale yellow, shabby houses and fluffy white snow that spectacularly covered the roofs of the houses and the entire area.
The author shows us a view from above, from approximately the height of the second floor we see a narrow snow-covered street with low and old, yellowish ocher dull buildings receding along, among which stands one single tree, with leaves that have not yet completely fallen, and all this against a background that is not entirely clear weather.
In the foreground, this whole picture is amused by a trio of young girlfriends who have just met, holding hands, they dance and rejoice at each other, the first snow and the new winter season. Not far from them, not paying attention to the joyful cries of the girls, a thoughtful dog was waiting for its owner in a telephone booth. Above this booth there is a balcony in which the figure of a young man can be seen, indifferently watching the cheerful trio.
The first snow that has fallen clearly tells us that there are very few footprints on the snowy street. In the background, next to the street slope, a frozen child’s figure can be seen, therefore this is a little girl looking down the slope of the street. One can assume that children are playing down there and life is more lively relative to the sparsely populated foreground.
Popov's painting The First Snow is full of some double psychologism: on the one hand, the plot is inspired by despondency and some dullness of life, on the other hand, the picture reflects the vital serenity of a regional town, in which, no matter what, people know how to enjoy life and the beginning of a snowy winter.

The first, soft, clean snow fell. What a wonderful snowflake landed on my palm! Large, shaggy, she looked like a fluff shining in the sun. Six equal rays diverged to the sides, looking like spruce paws, and the middle was like a tiny six-pointed star.

This is probably a child who cannot go outside because he is sick or his parents have not woken up yet.
In the picture we can see fallen leaves; they lie behind the fence in the yard. The leaves indicate that winter has not yet come into its own, but very soon autumn will have to give way to pure winter. And very soon the New Year holiday will come, which all people around the world are waiting for.

This is probably a very quiet area with few cars, or it happens on a Sunday morning when there is no need to rush anywhere. Everything is quiet and serene. The silence is broken only by the delight of the girls and, perhaps, the barking of a puppy.
The picture is not attractive with rich colors. There is an air of sadness from the yellowish-gray walls of the houses and the lonely tree. However, white snow transformed the world around us and gave it a festive look. Spectators watch what is happening on the street through the eyes of an artist who paints from a second or third floor window.
Popov's creative concept is based on contrasts. On one side there is a deserted street on a late autumn day. On the other, there are layers of fluffy snow, which overnight changed the dull picture of the world beyond recognition. The first snow symbolizes the beginning of a new thing, fresh, bright emotions. People are tired of the grayness of autumn, are happy about the changes taking place in nature and are optimistic about the future.
