Gerasim is the main character of the story “Mumu” by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev. From birth he was deaf and mute, so he could not hear either human speech or the sounds of nature, and he himself could not utter a single word. Gerasim had no one.
He lived alone in the village, in his small hut. Like many ordinary people of that time, he was an unfree, serf man and belonged to a certain Moscow feisty lady.

Everyone thought he was a very nice guy.
But fate wanted the lady to take the deaf-mute hero from the village to her place in Moscow. She probably liked his silent hard work. And he could not resist her, because she was his full-fledged mistress. At the Moscow estate, he was given new clothes and assigned to do new work. From a peasant, Gerasim unexpectedly turned into a janitor and watchman.
Working in the city in a new position was too easy for him. After all, he was used to hard field work, and working around the yard was not difficult for him.
His range of tasks was very small: sweep the yard, deliver a barrel of water to the estate, provide the household with firewood, keep strangers out, and guard at night. Gerasim completed all the main work in half an hour. He worked very hard, as he was used to in the village. Everywhere and in everything he had exemplary order.
But he did not like his new place of residence, he was homesick, his soul was yearning to return to his native village home. He felt like an animal that had been caught and imprisoned in a cage.
His dwelling was very modest and really looked like a cramped cage. He settled in a small room right above the kitchen. The atmosphere there was very simple.
There was very little furniture, only the essentials: a bed, a table and a chair. But it was all very strong, made of oak, to withstand the weight of the village hero.
Gerasim always locked his closet with a key - he was still unsociable and did not like strangers to come to him.

The courtyard people who lived with the lady were wary of Gerasim. They were afraid of the deaf-mute because his character was too strict and serious, and also because of his extraordinary strength and stern silence. “Who knows what’s wrong with him,” they probably thought. Behind his back, they called the janitor “goblin.”
Once it was the hero Gerasim who saved a little puppy, took him into his closet, warmed him, dried him and fed him. He cared for his pet as “no mother cares for her child.” It turned out that behind the stern appearance and powerful physique lies a very kind, gentle heart.
Gerasim named the little dog Mumu, because he could not utter any other word except this moo. Mumu always responded with joy to this simple name. Gerasim cared for the dog with warmth and loved her deeply. He gave all his unspent affection to this little devoted creature.
And Mumu followed on his heels, obeyed him unquestioningly and served him faithfully.
But they didn’t have to live happily together for long. Feeling his helplessness, out of hopelessness and despair, Gerasim drowned Mumu. For him it was an irreparable loss. He raised her as his own child, and with his own hands he had to kill her. His heart trembled, heavy tears rolled from his eyes, but at that moment he saw no other way out.
After the death of the dog, Gerasim could no longer endure his imprisonment in the city. He shows determination, which was previously unusual for him, and returns to his native village. Although he understands perfectly well, for such self-will - escaping - he faces severe punishment: hard labor or even death.
I feel sorry for Gerasim. Fate was harsh to him. Deprived of the gift of hearing and speech, he found himself deprived of everything that was dear to his heart and brought him joy and consolation.
And yet I don’t quite understand the hero of the story: why he still decided to drown the poor animal. Surely some way out could have been found. For example, give it into good hands.

There are quite a few types of essays. However, for an educational program in secondary school literature, it is customary to use only the main three:
- Narration is a brief retelling without adding the narrator’s own thoughts, but clearly structured in time and actions.
- Reasoning - the narrator conveys his thoughts and reasoning, draws conclusions and analyzes the narrative.

Life of Gerasim
The lady brought the mute janitor from the village. He was tall and very strong. At the same time he did not speak, but only hummed. Everyone was afraid of him, because they thought that Gerasim was not all right in his head.
In fact, Gerasim was not a stupid person. He did a good job as a janitor and watchman, and also carried out various assignments for his mistress well. For this, the hostess was very favorable to him.
One day a mute man fell in love with a yard girl, Tatyana, and wanted to marry her. But she was already engaged to another man, with whom she later left for the village on the orders of the lady. Gerasim's heart was broken.
The janitor was saved from melancholy and anxiety by a dog, which he rescued from the river as a small puppy. Everyone called the dog Mumu because it responded to the moo of its owner. The dog was smart and loyal, but his loud barking began to disturb the old lady.
The mistress of the estate ordered to get rid of the dog . At first she was sold at the bazaar, but Mumu returned. Then the manager ordered the animal to be killed. Poor Gerasim had no choice but to carry out the master's order. He took the dog to the middle of the river, tied a stone to his neck and threw it into the water.
After that, he collected his things and walked back to the village. There he remained to live, because after the death of the old lady everyone forgot about him. But he didn’t get any more animals for himself, and he didn’t want to get married either.
This essay is a retelling of “Mumu”, a striking example of the narrative style. It has a narrator:

However, this is an inaccurate and indetailed retelling of the work. The student only briefly conveyed the story in his own words. He highlighted the main, in his opinion, fragments of the story.
Reasoning about the janitor's actions
The main question that arises after reading the story is why Gerasim drowned Mumu, and not, for example, took him with him to the village. To understand this, you need to understand a little about the way of life and the order of those times.
The janitor was a serf, so he simply could not disobey the lady’s order . At that time, such disobedience could result in death. Although Gerasim loved his dog very much, he understood the difference between a person and an animal.
The fact that the janitor himself decided to fulfill the master’s will characterizes him as a courageous man. He simply could not entrust such a responsible task to someone else, or maybe he just wanted to be with his dog until the end. The solemnity of the moment can be determined from the images and actions of the main character, he:
- dresses in clean clothes;
- buys Mumu delicious food;
- crying.
He felt very sorry for the dog, but the man had no choice. Not only he himself could suffer for disobedience. The old lady's mood changed very often, so it was scary to anger her. All the courtyard people were afraid of the lord's wrath.
By leaving Gerasim to the village without the lord's permission, the writer wanted to show readers that even serfs can run out of patience . If a person has nothing to lose, then he does not need his own life, which means it is impossible to frighten him.
In this story, Turgenev describes the underside of the serf system. He wants the reader to know the truth about the difficult life of the common people. This work cannot leave even the most callous person indifferent.
This essay is a clear example of the style of reasoning. Here the author does not retell the story, he shares his thoughts, analyzes the topic and draws conclusions.
Description of the main character
The janitor Gerasim is the main character of Turgenev's story "Mumu". He was deaf and dumb from birth, but at the same time had a powerful physique and tall stature. Unsociability was a distinctive feature of Gerasim's character. He liked to spend time alone. The courtyard people were afraid of him, they thought that he was not right in the head.
However, this was far from the case. The man was kind to those weaker than him and harsh to drunken and angry people. Such feelings as love and affection were not alien to him. This can be judged by his actions.
He liked the girl Tatyana . He gave her gifts and protected her in every possible way. This speaks of the feelings of the mute, which he experienced in the same way as other people. Melancholy and anxiety after the departure of his beloved were also reflected in the actions of the protagonist. He even escorted the carriage with Tatyana to the bridge, although he understood that she was already married and they would never be together.
Attachment to the rescued dog speaks of the hero’s kindness. He not only saved her, but also got out. Even the fact that Gerasim decided to drown Mumu himself does not characterize the character from the bad side. He did this out of love for the animal, because he wanted to be completely devoted to his four-legged friend.
Gerasim was a very strong person, not only physically, but also mentally. Pride and courage are also present in the description of this man’s character. He was not afraid of the lord’s anger when he went to the village without permission.
The mute janitor can be called a positive hero . Despite his strength and heroic physique, he was a kind and loving person, with his own moral principles.
This is a descriptive essay. There is no retelling of the plot, reasoning or personal thoughts. All conclusions are based on the text of the story and on the description of the character himself.

The tragedy of the main character’s life lies in the fact that: firstly, he was deaf and dumb, which means he could not have a full, happy life, like everyone else. In the story of the great Russian writer I.S. Turgenev's "Mumu" the author introduces the reader to the way of life and the life of the peasant people. He shows the unfortunate fate of the serfs, who are entirely in the hands of their masters. Serf peasants do not have the right to control their lives; no one cares about their feelings.

The main character of this work is a simple man who is described as tall and having a thick build. Despite his stern and formidable appearance, Gerasim is an incredibly kind and good person who, from birth, has been deprived of the ability to hear and speak. However, in his soul he has an incredibly large number of goals and desires. He is an incredibly hardworking person, and is always willing to do even the hardest work. Despite all this, the hostess treats him extremely dismissively and arrogantly. Gerasim once falls in love with a woman who works as a laundress for the landlady. He falls in love with Tatyana and tries to show her all kinds of attention. However, nothing comes of this idea, since the mistress gave her in marriage to a drinking man who will take her out of town. Then Gerasim begins to feel very sad and practically gives up on people.
But still, fate gives him a second chance, and one day he saves a small dog that was stuck in a swamp. He saves her and leaves her to live with him, giving her the name Mumu. Gerasim hides the creature to whom he managed to become incredibly attached and fall in love so that no one could offend her. But one day, Gerasim’s owner saw the dog and ordered Gerasim to get rid of it. And he has no choice but to carry out this assignment. He drowns Mumu and decides to leave the domain in which he lived forever. He begins to live alone and does not want anyone to come close to him. Here you can see the real pain of a person who has had to endure betrayal and deception more than once. He believed people and wanted to do good, but he was not understood by anyone, and this is his tragedy.

Essay on the topic “The tragic fate of Gerasim”
Despite the title of my essay, I believe that in order to understand the fate of Gerasim, the format of the story is clearly not enough. To have an idea of a person’s fate, in my opinion, it is necessary to have information about his entire life, or at least about its main milestones.
In the story “Mumu” the author describes only an episode of Gerasim’s life associated with his residence in Moscow.
And at the same time, Turgenev, a master of portrait and landscape, managed in all its “glory” to convey the image of the serf system of the 19th century, this way of life, in which the complete arbitrariness of the landowners gave rise to complete lack of rights and depersonalization of the serfs.

The main character of the story “Mumu” Gerasim was deaf and mute from birth. Being a native village resident, he was brought to Moscow against his will. Being already an elderly man and having grown up on the land, Gerasim had difficulty getting used to the city way of life.
Imagine! Having no friends (who would be interested in spending time and communicating with a deaf-mute?!!), having no prospects for changing his life for the better (what prospects could people of the class to which Gerasim belonged!!!), Gerasim nevertheless continued to regularly perform the work assigned to him as a janitor at the court of a capricious lady suffering from constant migraines.
However, fate would seem to give Gerasim the opportunity to bring order and meaning into his life. He is trying to look after Tatyana. And he’s even seriously considering going to the lady to ask permission to marry. But while Gerasim is making up his mind, while he is waiting for a new caftan to go to the lady, she decides to give Tatyana in marriage to Kapiton, a drunken shoemaker. It is useless to argue and Tatyana is lost to Gerasim forever.
Only Gerasim knows what was going on in his soul at that time. The author helps us understand this by describing the wedding day, when he arrived from the river without water, having broken a barrel, and the torment of the horse, which staggered when Gerasim cleaned him with irrepressible zeal.
Gerasim came to terms with the loss only after Tatyana left for the village.
Returning after seeing Tatyana off, Gerasim saw a small puppy in the river who could not get out of the water. Gerasim looked after the dog all evening and only fell into a restless but joyful sleep in the morning. Of course, because he again has the meaning of life. He now has a being to whom he can devote himself and who will reciprocate.
A simple retelling of what happened subsequently cannot convey the full tragedy in the fate of Gerasim.
The author, as if emphasizing this, or perhaps not finding it possible to describe Gerasim’s state of mind, rather quickly ends his story with lines about Gerasim’s return to the village, about the death of his lady, about how Gerasim now lives alone, without a wife, and about that he doesn't like dogs...

And only two tears of Gerasim, which Turgenev nevertheless told us about, make it possible to try to understand what the dog with the funny nickname Mumu really was for Gerasim.
The man, who probably never cried at all and always remained outwardly calm, could not control himself.
After all, by order of the noblewoman - a tyrant, he had to destroy the only creature dear to him, and with him his love, affection, hope.
I believe that in his work “Mumu” I.S. Turgenev fully revealed the tragic fate of not only Gerasim, but also of all serfs in Russia in the 19th century.

As a result, Gerasim fell in love with the girl Tatyana and even wanted to ask the hostess’s permission to marry her.
Later, the young lady decided to marry the alcoholic shoemaker Kapiton to Tatyana. The hostess wanted him to stop drinking. Tatyana agreed with her mistress in everything and came to terms with this too. All the workers did not want the janitor Gerasim to find out about this wedding. As we know from the story, Gerasim is a janitor, a deaf-mute and good-natured big man who serves his evil and capricious mistress. His duties were to keep the courtyard clean and tidy, and in addition to this, he carried out all sorts of small orders from the noblewoman.
Mumu is his little dog, devoted to his master. Every morning Gerasim swept the yard with his huge broom, and she always hovered nearby. Gerasim is the main character of the story “Mumu” by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev. Literally from the first lines of the work, starting the story about the old lady, the author himself distinguishes him from other characters: “Of all her servants, the most remarkable person was the janitor Gerasim...”.
Describing Gerasim, Turgenev admires his strength and hard work: “Gifted with extraordinary strength,
he worked for four people - the matter was going well in his hands...” However, the author endowed his hero with one more difference - Gerasim was mute.
But from the story we understand that in reality all the other heroes were “mute”, who did not have their own opinions and their desires, did not know self-esteem and were like slaves.
In describing the character, actions of Gerasim, his relationships with other characters, Turgenev shows the moral superiority of this hero. Talking about Gerasim, the author compares him to a young and healthy bull, a sedate gander, and a lion.

Turgenev says about Gerasim: “he... followed all orders exactly, but he also knew his rights...”. So, having obediently fulfilled the will of the lady by drowning Mumu, Gerasim goes to the village. With this he expressed his protest against the mistress’s attitude towards her servants.
The very last word of the story is “mute.” Turgenev shows us that, unlike heroes who can speak, only the mute Gerasim has a voice - his own voice.
