Essay on the tragic fate of Gerasim from the story of Mumu, grade 5

The work of I. Turgenev is included in the educational school curriculum. In grade 5, students are asked to write an essay on the work “Mumu”. In order to better cope with this task, you should carefully read the narrative of this story, study the characteristics of the main characters, and also make a brief analysis of the story and draw up a work plan.

The image of Gerasim in the story “Mumu” by Turgenev

Plan:

  1. Who is Gerasim?
  2. Appearance of the hero;
  3. How did he get to the lady;
  4. His responsibilities;
  5. Housing;
  6. Relation to Mumu;
  7. Character of Gerasim;
  8. Why is he leaving his lady?
  9. My attitude towards Gerasim.

Gerasim is the main character of the story “Mumu” by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev. From birth he was deaf and mute, so he could not hear either human speech or the sounds of nature, and he himself could not utter a single word. Gerasim had no one.

He lived alone in the village, in his small hut. Like many ordinary people of that time, he was an unfree, serf man and belonged to a certain Moscow feisty lady.

He worked for her, meekly doing the hardest peasant work.

This village man was a real Russian hero. Nature generously endowed him with extraordinary physical strength. He was a very tall man - “12 vershoks” or almost two meters tall and of a very strong build.

note

He had big working hands and huge palms. He had no equal in his work; everything came easy to him. He worked tirelessly for four people. And he mowed, and plowed, and threshed, deftly and skillfully.

Everyone thought he was a very nice guy.

But fate wanted the lady to take the deaf-mute hero from the village to her place in Moscow. She probably liked his silent hard work. And he could not resist her, because she was his full-fledged mistress. At the Moscow estate, he was given new clothes and assigned to do new work. From a peasant, Gerasim unexpectedly turned into a janitor and watchman.

Working in the city in a new position was too easy for him. After all, he was used to hard field work, and working around the yard was not difficult for him.

His range of tasks was very small: sweep the yard, deliver a barrel of water to the estate, provide the household with firewood, keep strangers out, and guard at night. Gerasim completed all the main work in half an hour. He worked very hard, as he was used to in the village. Everywhere and in everything he had exemplary order.

But he did not like his new place of residence, he was homesick, his soul was yearning to return to his native village home. He felt like an animal that had been caught and imprisoned in a cage.

His dwelling was very modest and really looked like a cramped cage. He settled in a small room right above the kitchen. The atmosphere there was very simple.

There was very little furniture, only the essentials: a bed, a table and a chair. But it was all very strong, made of oak, to withstand the weight of the village hero.

Gerasim always locked his closet with a key - he was still unsociable and did not like strangers to come to him.

Important

The courtyard people who lived with the lady were wary of Gerasim. They were afraid of the deaf-mute because his character was too strict and serious, and also because of his extraordinary strength and stern silence. “Who knows what’s wrong with him,” they probably thought. Behind his back, they called the janitor “goblin.”

Once it was the hero Gerasim who saved a little puppy, took him into his closet, warmed him, dried him and fed him. He cared for his pet as “no mother cares for her child.” It turned out that behind the stern appearance and powerful physique lies a very kind, gentle heart.

Gerasim named the little dog Mumu, because he could not utter any other word except this moo. Mumu always responded with joy to this simple name. Gerasim cared for the dog with warmth and loved her deeply. He gave all his unspent affection to this little devoted creature.

And Mumu followed on his heels, obeyed him unquestioningly and served him faithfully.

But they didn’t have to live happily together for long. Feeling his helplessness, out of hopelessness and despair, Gerasim drowned Mumu. For him it was an irreparable loss. He raised her as his own child, and with his own hands he had to kill her. His heart trembled, heavy tears rolled from his eyes, but at that moment he saw no other way out.

After the death of the dog, Gerasim could no longer endure his imprisonment in the city. He shows determination, which was previously unusual for him, and returns to his native village. Although he understands perfectly well, for such self-will - escaping - he faces severe punishment: hard labor or even death.

I feel sorry for Gerasim. Fate was harsh to him. Deprived of the gift of hearing and speech, he found himself deprived of everything that was dear to his heart and brought him joy and consolation.

And yet I don’t quite understand the hero of the story: why he still decided to drown the poor animal. Surely some way out could have been found. For example, give it into good hands.

What thoughts and experiences tormented Gerasim and why he committed his cruel act, unfortunately, we will no longer know.

Types and examples of essays

There are quite a few types of essays. However, for an educational program in secondary school literature, it is customary to use only the main three:

  1. Narration is a brief retelling without adding the narrator’s own thoughts, but clearly structured in time and actions.
  2. Reasoning - the narrator conveys his thoughts and reasoning, draws conclusions and analyzes the narrative.
  3. Description - suitable for conveying images of objects or characters. For example, a description of a picture or a person’s appearance.

For an essay on the topic “Mumu”, the first two writing options are more suitable, but this is only if the emphasis is not on the appearance of the characters.

To better understand the similarities and differences between the types, you should carefully analyze the writing example of each of them.

Life of Gerasim

The lady brought the mute janitor from the village. He was tall and very strong. At the same time he did not speak, but only hummed. Everyone was afraid of him, because they thought that Gerasim was not all right in his head.

In fact, Gerasim was not a stupid person. He did a good job as a janitor and watchman, and also carried out various assignments for his mistress well. For this, the hostess was very favorable to him.

One day a mute man fell in love with a yard girl, Tatyana, and wanted to marry her. But she was already engaged to another man, with whom she later left for the village on the orders of the lady. Gerasim's heart was broken.

The janitor was saved from melancholy and anxiety by a dog, which he rescued from the river as a small puppy. Everyone called the dog Mumu because it responded to the moo of its owner. The dog was smart and loyal, but his loud barking began to disturb the old lady.

The mistress of the estate ordered to get rid of the dog . At first she was sold at the bazaar, but Mumu returned. Then the manager ordered the animal to be killed. Poor Gerasim had no choice but to carry out the master's order. He took the dog to the middle of the river, tied a stone to his neck and threw it into the water.

After that, he collected his things and walked back to the village. There he remained to live, because after the death of the old lady everyone forgot about him. But he didn’t get any more animals for himself, and he didn’t want to get married either.

This essay is a retelling of “Mumu”, a striking example of the narrative style. It has a narrator:

  • describes the plot;
  • does not insert his own thoughts and reasoning;
  • does not draw conclusions.

However, this is an inaccurate and indetailed retelling of the work. The student only briefly conveyed the story in his own words. He highlighted the main, in his opinion, fragments of the story.

Reasoning about the janitor's actions

The main question that arises after reading the story is why Gerasim drowned Mumu, and not, for example, took him with him to the village. To understand this, you need to understand a little about the way of life and the order of those times.

The janitor was a serf, so he simply could not disobey the lady’s order . At that time, such disobedience could result in death. Although Gerasim loved his dog very much, he understood the difference between a person and an animal.

The fact that the janitor himself decided to fulfill the master’s will characterizes him as a courageous man. He simply could not entrust such a responsible task to someone else, or maybe he just wanted to be with his dog until the end. The solemnity of the moment can be determined from the images and actions of the main character, he:

  • dresses in clean clothes;
  • buys Mumu delicious food;
  • crying.

He felt very sorry for the dog, but the man had no choice. Not only he himself could suffer for disobedience. The old lady's mood changed very often, so it was scary to anger her. All the courtyard people were afraid of the lord's wrath.

By leaving Gerasim to the village without the lord's permission, the writer wanted to show readers that even serfs can run out of patience . If a person has nothing to lose, then he does not need his own life, which means it is impossible to frighten him.

In this story, Turgenev describes the underside of the serf system. He wants the reader to know the truth about the difficult life of the common people. This work cannot leave even the most callous person indifferent.

This essay is a clear example of the style of reasoning. Here the author does not retell the story, he shares his thoughts, analyzes the topic and draws conclusions.

Description of the main character

The janitor Gerasim is the main character of Turgenev's story "Mumu". He was deaf and dumb from birth, but at the same time had a powerful physique and tall stature. Unsociability was a distinctive feature of Gerasim's character. He liked to spend time alone. The courtyard people were afraid of him, they thought that he was not right in the head.

However, this was far from the case. The man was kind to those weaker than him and harsh to drunken and angry people. Such feelings as love and affection were not alien to him. This can be judged by his actions.

He liked the girl Tatyana . He gave her gifts and protected her in every possible way. This speaks of the feelings of the mute, which he experienced in the same way as other people. Melancholy and anxiety after the departure of his beloved were also reflected in the actions of the protagonist. He even escorted the carriage with Tatyana to the bridge, although he understood that she was already married and they would never be together.

Attachment to the rescued dog speaks of the hero’s kindness. He not only saved her, but also got out. Even the fact that Gerasim decided to drown Mumu himself does not characterize the character from the bad side. He did this out of love for the animal, because he wanted to be completely devoted to his four-legged friend.

Gerasim was a very strong person, not only physically, but also mentally. Pride and courage are also present in the description of this man’s character. He was not afraid of the lord’s anger when he went to the village without permission.

The mute janitor can be called a positive hero . Despite his strength and heroic physique, he was a kind and loving person, with his own moral principles.

This is a descriptive essay. There is no retelling of the plot, reasoning or personal thoughts. All conclusions are based on the text of the story and on the description of the character himself.

Expert (311) 1 year ago Turgenev did not invent this sad story. He described it based on the life of a neighbor boy who had to endure such a difficult lot. The tragedy of the main character’s life lies in the fact that: firstly, he was deaf and dumb, which means he could not have a full, happy life, like everyone else. Secondly, the lack of hearing and speech provided him with loneliness, because he began to withdraw into himself and distance himself from people. His only physical advantage was his strength as a man. He did not study, did not do mental work, but did what he did best. That is why he was sent to work for a lady in Moscow. At first, Gerasim was happy with life in his lady’s closet, because he was doing what he loved. He even fell in love with the laundress Tatyana. But these feelings ended very tragically: she was not allowed to marry the main character, but was given away to the terrible drunkard Capiton. And so that Gerasim would not suffer too much, they forced her to pretend to be drunk so that he would be disappointed in her. This silent giant became lonely again, and this is already the third tragedy in Gerasim’s life. The fourth tragedy became the most difficult in the fate of Gerasim. His meeting with an unsightly dog by the river ends with him taking her into his house. From the care and kindness of a silent man, she turned into a very attractive dog with a white color and black spots. For Mumu (Gerasim gave this nickname to the dog) there was even a small door made into the main character’s closet. He was happy until the moment the lady saw her. Mumu greeted this woman with a loud bark, so she decided to remove the dog from the yard forever. It was hard for Gerasim. I don’t understand why he decided to drown the dog! After all, he saved her in the river when she was drowning! To get rid of it, it would be enough to take her far, far away, so that she would never find her way. Or you could take your loved one to the village. Also an option. It’s difficult for me to judge Gerasim’s morality. On the one hand, he is kind and capable of tender feelings, but on the other, it seems to me, he is stupid. Mumu was a real friend for him! I can’t imagine killing even a sparrow, let alone a beloved pet, a faithful friend.

Summary

The lady decided to marry the drunkard Kapiton to his beloved Gerasim. Deciding that such a woman would be able to discourage the shoemaker from drinking alcohol. And so that Gerasim, in a fit of emotion, would not fight with Kapiton, the butler Gavrila persuaded Tatyana, for fun, to pretend to be drunk. For Gerasim, drunk people were hateful. Seeing Tatyana staggering, Gerasim was shocked. In his world without sound, everything turned upside down. Gerasim spent the whole day in the janitor's room worrying and suffering. And then he resigned himself and stopped paying attention to Tatyana and her husband Kapiton.

A year later, the lady sent Kapiton, who had finally become an alcoholic, and his wife to the village. And then it becomes clear that Gerasim’s feelings have not completely faded away. Having gone to see Tatyana and her husband off, he gave her a red paper handkerchief as a farewell gift. On his way back, Gerasim picked up the puppy. The hungry and wet puppy was so defenseless that Gerasim, lonely and unhappy, decided to take care of the dog. Gerasim named the puppy Mumu, deaf and dumb, and took care of him as if he were his own child.

He loved the affectionate Mumu with all his heart. I became attached to her and could no longer imagine life without her. But the lady decided that the dog was aggressive and ordered her to be driven out of the yard. Animals do not obey someone’s will; they either love devotedly or are afraid and show aggression. The lady wanted to pet Mumu, but the stranger’s dog got scared and bared its teeth. The people in the lady’s yard were forced, so they had to carry out the order. Mumu was taken to the market and sold. For the second time, Gerasim lost something dear to his heart. His soul was torn, but Mumu was nowhere to be found. After some time, the dog returned to his beloved owner.

She came running with a piece of rope around her neck. Trying to protect Mumu from the lady, Gerasim did not let the dog out of the closet, walked with her only at night and tried in every possible way to hide the fact of Mumu’s existence. But one day the dog barked and the lady found out everything. Out of anger, she ordered to kill the dog. Gerasim was a forced man and carried out the lady’s orders. Having fed Mumu for the last time in the tavern, he took her by boat to the middle of the river, tied a stone and threw her into the water. What was going on at that moment in the soul of this unfortunate man is difficult to imagine. When he returned, he packed his things and left for his native village. The lady did not return him, because she was angry with him.

How to write an essay on the topic “The tragic fate of Gerasim”?

In the story of the great Russian writer I.S. Turgenev's "Mumu" the author introduces the reader to the way of life and the life of the peasant people. He shows the unfortunate fate of the serfs, who are entirely in the hands of their masters. Serf peasants do not have the right to control their lives; no one cares about their feelings.

One of the tragic destinies of the main character Gerasim passes before the reader’s gaze in this story. Gerasim is a serf peasant. He serves as an old lady's janitor. She brought him from the village, tearing him away from his usual life, his favorite business, to her Moscow house. There they gave him a broom, and he began sweeping the yard and protecting the house from thieves.

Turgenev draws the portrait of Gerasim with great love. Before us appears a huge strong man of tall stature, with brown hair and light eyes. Gerasim loved order in everything and cleanliness and order were always maintained around him. He is respected and feared by those around him. He treated everyone equally.

Advice!

Among all the servants, he especially singled out the laundress Tatyana, who also served and lived with the lady. His courtship of Tatyana became noticeable, and everyone realized that Gerasim fell in love with the girl. Serfs did not belong to themselves. Their personal lives could be pushed around by their masters as they pleased.

Gerasim's desire to marry Tatyana was not destined to come true, since the lady ordered the girl to be married off to someone else. How hard Gerasim experienced such a shock can be judged by the description of his behavior in the story. He stopped leaving the closet and lay on the bed for a long time, like a wounded animal.

When he went to say goodbye to Tatyana, he gave her a gift - a red scarf, and she kissed him like a Christian. On the way back, Gerasim picked up a small dog, which he brought home. Mumu lived well with Gerasim, he took care of her like a small child. But the old lady, seeing the dog, ordered to get rid of it.

Accustomed to obeying his masters in everything and not contradicting them, Gerasim unquestioningly carries out orders. After he drowned Mumu, he decides to leave the lady.

The tragedy of Gerasim’s fate lies in the fact that everything he loved was taken away from him. He was torn away from his beloved job, he was separated from the woman he loved, he was not even given the opportunity to keep his beloved dog. The story of Gerasim's life in the story ends with the fact that Gerasim remained to live in the village, but never married again and never touched a single dog.

Reasoning 3

This magnificent story by the wonderful author Turgenev raises the question of the problems that exist among the people under such a form of existence as serfdom, which limits the rights of serfs, making them unhappy and weak-willed. In addition, the author himself expresses his point of view in relation to this system, which he despises, and considers it impossible for someone to keep another person in slavery who is not worse than himself. Also, this raises a problem such as injustice in decision-making directly by the owners of serfs, who do not believe that they should have any desires and aspirations of their own.

The main character of this work is a simple man who is described as tall and having a thick build. Despite his stern and formidable appearance, Gerasim is an incredibly kind and good person who, from birth, has been deprived of the ability to hear and speak. However, in his soul he has an incredibly large number of goals and desires. He is an incredibly hardworking person, and is always willing to do even the hardest work. Despite all this, the hostess treats him extremely dismissively and arrogantly. Gerasim once falls in love with a woman who works as a laundress for the landlady. He falls in love with Tatyana and tries to show her all kinds of attention. However, nothing comes of this idea, since the mistress gave her in marriage to a drinking man who will take her out of town. Then Gerasim begins to feel very sad and practically gives up on people.

But still, fate gives him a second chance, and one day he saves a small dog that was stuck in a swamp. He saves her and leaves her to live with him, giving her the name Mumu. Gerasim hides the creature to whom he managed to become incredibly attached and fall in love so that no one could offend her. But one day, Gerasim’s owner saw the dog and ordered Gerasim to get rid of it. And he has no choice but to carry out this assignment. He drowns Mumu and decides to leave the domain in which he lived forever. He begins to live alone and does not want anyone to come close to him. Here you can see the real pain of a person who has had to endure betrayal and deception more than once. He believed people and wanted to do good, but he was not understood by anyone, and this is his tragedy.

Essay on the topic “The tragic fate of Gerasim”

Despite the title of my essay, I believe that in order to understand the fate of Gerasim, the format of the story is clearly not enough. To have an idea of a person’s fate, in my opinion, it is necessary to have information about his entire life, or at least about its main milestones.

In the story “Mumu” the author describes only an episode of Gerasim’s life associated with his residence in Moscow.

And at the same time, Turgenev, a master of portrait and landscape, managed in all its “glory” to convey the image of the serf system of the 19th century, this way of life, in which the complete arbitrariness of the landowners gave rise to complete lack of rights and depersonalization of the serfs.

note

The main character of the story “Mumu” Gerasim was deaf and mute from birth. Being a native village resident, he was brought to Moscow against his will. Being already an elderly man and having grown up on the land, Gerasim had difficulty getting used to the city way of life.

Imagine! Having no friends (who would be interested in spending time and communicating with a deaf-mute?!!), having no prospects for changing his life for the better (what prospects could people of the class to which Gerasim belonged!!!), Gerasim nevertheless continued to regularly perform the work assigned to him as a janitor at the court of a capricious lady suffering from constant migraines.

However, fate would seem to give Gerasim the opportunity to bring order and meaning into his life. He is trying to look after Tatyana. Showing her small signs of attention from time to time, Gerasim then generally took her under his protection (the courtyard people could sometimes make fun of and offend her).

And he’s even seriously considering going to the lady to ask permission to marry. But while Gerasim is making up his mind, while he is waiting for a new caftan to go to the lady, she decides to give Tatyana in marriage to Kapiton, a drunken shoemaker. It is useless to argue and Tatyana is lost to Gerasim forever.

Only Gerasim knows what was going on in his soul at that time. The author helps us understand this by describing the wedding day, when he arrived from the river without water, having broken a barrel, and the torment of the horse, which staggered when Gerasim cleaned him with irrepressible zeal.

Gerasim came to terms with the loss only after Tatyana left for the village.

Returning after seeing Tatyana off, Gerasim saw a small puppy in the river who could not get out of the water. Gerasim looked after the dog all evening and only fell into a restless but joyful sleep in the morning. Of course, because he again has the meaning of life. He now has a being to whom he can devote himself and who will reciprocate.

A simple retelling of what happened subsequently cannot convey the full tragedy in the fate of Gerasim.

The author, as if emphasizing this, or perhaps not finding it possible to describe Gerasim’s state of mind, rather quickly ends his story with lines about Gerasim’s return to the village, about the death of his lady, about how Gerasim now lives alone, without a wife, and about that he doesn't like dogs...

Important

And only two tears of Gerasim, which Turgenev nevertheless told us about, make it possible to try to understand what the dog with the funny nickname Mumu really was for Gerasim.

The man, who probably never cried at all and always remained outwardly calm, could not control himself.

After all, by order of the noblewoman - a tyrant, he had to destroy the only creature dear to him, and with him his love, affection, hope.

I believe that in his work “Mumu” I.S. Turgenev fully revealed the tragic fate of not only Gerasim, but also of all serfs in Russia in the 19th century.

Option 4

The story involves such people as a janitor named Gerasim and a dog named Mumu. Also, the heroes of the work are a serf named Tatyana and a lady. The story is not only interesting, but also very sad.

The plot is that one elderly lady took Gerasim as her janitor. The man was tall and could not hear anything; he had been deaf since birth. He was very hardworking, did hard work, plowed, mowed. But when he had a broom and a shovel in his hands, such work seemed like a joke to him. He did it quickly and easily, then he simply went to a corner and lay on the ground in the yard. Many were afraid of him.

Over time, the man began to get used to city life. Later he was given his own place, where he cleaned up and made his own bed and table with chairs.

Also in the house of the capricious lady lived a washerwoman named Tatyana, a woman of short stature, thin build, with white hair. The woman had never seen anything good in her life, she worked a lot, dressed poorly, and received mere pennies. Tatyana was afraid of her mistress and always tried to please her.

When Tatyana first saw Gerasim, she was scared of him and tried to avoid him for a long time, which the janitor laughed at. Later Gerasim paid attention to her, smiled at her, and treated her to sweets. He also protected Tatyana and tried to keep her safe. As a result, Gerasim fell in love with the girl Tatyana and even wanted to ask the hostess’s permission to marry her.

Later, the young lady decided to marry the alcoholic shoemaker Kapiton to Tatyana. The hostess wanted him to stop drinking. Tatyana agreed with her mistress in everything and came to terms with this too. All the workers did not want the janitor Gerasim to find out about this wedding. And then one of his subordinates comes up with the idea to have Tatyana pretend to be drunk, since Gerasim can’t stand drunks, he would stop loving her. The laundress did not agree to this idea for a long time, but later she decided. He saw that Tatyana was allegedly not sober, pushed her away and left. The plan worked and later the girl married Capiton.

Later, the couple had to leave, and Gerasim went to see them off, and on the way back he met a poor hungry puppy. He took him in, looked after him, fed him, and gave her the nickname Mumu. The lady did not know about the appearance of the dog. But when she found out, she gave the order to kill the dog, Gerasim had to decide to do it. He went to the river and decided to drown the puppy, although he felt very sorry for him. Having completed this difficult act, he did not return to the lady, he went to the village.

In this story, the main character Gerasim symbolizes people who live under serfdom. At the end of the work, Gerasim showed a clear protest against serfdom by not returning to his mistress. But then his action towards the puppy, whom he loved so much and cared for until the last, is unclear.

Essay MuMu: 5th grade

One of the program works for fifth-graders is the story “Mumu” by Ivan Turgenev, and children usually prepare written work based on it. The essay “Mumu”, as a rule, is successfully given to schoolchildren who, due to their age, are still naive, but already know how to feel pity and compassion. Especially to animals. We present to your attention the essay “Mumu”: 5th grade.

The story “Mumu” by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev is very pitiful. I found it difficult to read. Sometimes tears flowed from my eyes, especially at the end of the piece.

This is a story about the life of an unhappy, but very good man, and about his beloved dog. The main character's name was Gerasim. He was a serf and lived in a village. But the lady decided to take him to Moscow, and Gerasim went.

Although maybe he didn't want that. In Moscow, he had to work as a janitor for a lady.

The author shows us Gerasim as a strong, courageous and kind person. He is not afraid of work, he tries to help everyone. They respect him and even fear him a little, although Gerasim is deaf and dumb.

But no one makes fun of him because of this. Gerasim is also a very lonely person. He has no friends or family. It is probably difficult for him to communicate with people, but one day he still falls in love with Tatyana.

She was also a serf and worked as a laundress.

And serfs in those days were like slaves. They had no right to decide where to live or whom to marry. So Gerasim could not offer Tatyana to become his wife. The lady decided everything for them. She found Tatyana a husband - the drunkard Kapiton.

Advice!

And how Gerasim looked after Tatyana, how he loved her! This is shown very well in the story. He protected his beloved girl, protected her, smiled when he met, and his face shone with joy.

The image of Gerasim in Turgenev's story MuMu essay

MuMu is a work that Turgenev wrote in 1852. They say that real facts from life were taken as a basis, which were told to the writer by a janitor working for Turgenev’s mother. From his story we learn about the life of people during serfdom, where the main character is Gerasim.

Gerasim is a serf who belongs to a lady. It is about him that we will write our essay, highlighting the image of Gerasim that the writer created. In his story, Turgenev makes the image of Gerasim the central figure of his work and the only main character, with the help of which the author shows the reader the spirit and strength of the Russian people.

Gerasim's story

Having read Turgenev’s work and now working on an essay for grade 5, we learn that Gerasim is a wonderful person, kind, hard-working, who lived in the village. He loved the land very much, loved to work on it, and he didn’t need anything else. He worked tirelessly. But the lady decides to take him to the city, making him a janitor.

Here our hero was surrounded by an atmosphere of envy and sycophancy that existed among the city serfs. This was alien to Gerasim, but there was nowhere to go and he continued, as he did in the village, to fulfill his duties with all responsibility.

Important

In the midst of this whole atmosphere, Gerasim’s feelings for the washerwoman developed, but on the orders of the lady, Tatyana is married off to a drunken shoemaker. This broke Gerasim's heart. He is saved from sadness and a dull life by a small dog, to which the hero became attached, taking him into his closet.

But the lady orders to kill the dog and Gerasim obeyed. Afterwards, he could no longer live in the city, and voluntarily goes back to the village.

Description of the appearance and character of Gerasim

The author in the story MuMu, on which we are writing an essay, creates a positive image of Gerasim. This is a strong man, healthy and strong. A real hero, but with one flaw. He was deaf and dumb. However, this did not stop him from being hardworking and economical.

This is a man with a sensitive heart, a kind soul, and self-esteem. When Gerasim falls in love with a girl, we see how this giant turns into a man with tender and touching feelings.

Essay 3

Surely, everyone who read Turgenev’s story “Mumu” wondered why the main character, Gerasim, could not disobey his mistress and drowned his best friend, a small dog, which he himself had once saved from the river. The story touched many people to the core, but during the author’s lifetime, people treated dogs less reverently than they do today. They were kept at courts exclusively as watchmen, or they went hunting with them. But Gerasim was not like everyone else, he loved his little dog very much and treated her no worse than a person.

As we know from the story, Gerasim is a janitor, a deaf-mute and good-natured big man who serves his evil and capricious mistress. His duties were to keep the courtyard clean and tidy, and in addition to this, he carried out all sorts of small orders from the noblewoman.

Mumu is his little dog, devoted to his master. Every morning Gerasim swept the yard with his huge broom, and she always hovered nearby. The owner immediately took a dislike to Mumu, she complained that with her barking she did not allow her to sleep peacefully at night, although it seems that she simply found fault with everyone and everything around her, that was her character. So, simply out of banal meanness, she ordered Gerasim to get rid of the little dog; she took pleasure in watching the poor serf janitor suffer, knowing full well about his enormous affection for Mumu.

Essay Gerasim - the main character of Turgenev's story "Mumu" - Essay

Gerasim is the main character of I. S. Turgenev’s story “Mumu”

Gerasim is the main character of the story “Mumu” by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev. Literally from the first lines of the work, starting the story about the old lady, the author himself distinguishes him from other characters: “Of all her servants, the most remarkable person was the janitor Gerasim...”.

Describing Gerasim, Turgenev admires his strength and hard work: “Gifted with extraordinary strength,

he worked for four people - the matter was going well in his hands...” However, the author endowed his hero with one more difference - Gerasim was mute.

But from the story we understand that in reality all the other heroes were “mute”, who did not have their own opinions and their desires, did not know self-esteem and were like slaves.

In describing the character, actions of Gerasim, his relationships with other characters, Turgenev shows the moral superiority of this hero. Talking about Gerasim, the author compares him to a young and healthy bull, a sedate gander, and a lion.

To show the heroic power of Gerasim, Turgenev uses hyperbole: “... the scythe acted so crushingly that it would be enough to sweep away a young birch forest from its roots...”, “... built... a truly heroic bed; a hundred pounds could have been put on it - it wouldn’t have bent...”

If the author compares Gerasim with a hero, a giant, then he calls the rest of the heroes “little people.” The courtyard people tried to please the lady, mindlessly fulfilling her every whim, humiliating themselves and others. The lady considers herself to have the right to control their destinies. So, for example, because of her whim, Gerasim lost first Tatyana, and then Mumu.

Advice!

Throughout the story, we see that in any situation the hero retains such qualities as hard work, honesty, and the ability to love. He always keeps his word and has self-esteem. This is the moral superiority of Gerasim.

Turgenev says about Gerasim: “he... followed all orders exactly, but he also knew his rights...”. So, having obediently fulfilled the will of the lady by drowning Mumu, Gerasim goes to the village. With this he expressed his protest against the mistress’s attitude towards her servants.

The very last word of the story is “mute.” Turgenev shows us that, unlike heroes who can speak, only the mute Gerasim has a voice - his own voice.
