The Great Patriotic War, which lasted for five long years, turned into a real disaster for many countries, and for Russia in particular. The fascists, who transgressed all the laws of humanity, eventually found themselves outside the bounds of all laws. The Russian people survived all the hardships of the war, but did not bow their heads to the enemy.
No matter how sad it may sound, nowadays humanity is forgetting about the heroic deeds of our grandfathers, grandmothers, and great-grandfathers. Using the chronicles of that time, front-line authors help to feel all the grief and courage of ordinary people who had only one intention - to save their loved ones and defend their Motherland.
Boris Vasiliev’s book “And the Dawns Here Are Quiet...” is dedicated to everyone who did not return from the merciless war, to the heroic deeds of girls and women during the war. Five completely different female characters and destinies.
It’s very painful and pity for ordinary girls who did not have time to experience life. Young, so real: Rita Osyanina, Sonya Gurvich, Galya Chetvertak, Lisa Brichkina and Zhenya Komelkova. All these girls gave their lives for the future, for the Motherland. The Great War did not give them the right to choose, divided their lives into “before” and “after”, and forced them to take up arms in tender hands.
Fedot Vaskov strongly blamed himself for the death of the girls. He realized that all women should raise children, not fight. He desperately wanted to take revenge on those fascists for their deaths, since the lives of each of them were not worth even a hundred Germans.
The story tells in rich colors what is happening during the Great Patriotic War, as if transporting the reader to the bloody forties. The war was merciless to all Soviet families. Men and old people, women, and even children took part in the battle...

The story shows the whole truth, it does not hide anything. It makes you feel and understand what value human life is. The main characters have a whole life ahead of them, an incredible number of plans and desires, but at one moment everything ends. Boris Vasiliev forces us to think about our purpose and how fragile this life is.
War is merciless. Five young and naive girls gave their lives so that we could live in peace and not be afraid. The story “The Dawns Here Are Quiet...” does not give us the right to forget the events of those years, it makes us respect the heroes of the war and love our lands.
Now people want to erase the past from their lives. They let everything pass them by, thinking that it’s not their problem and it won’t affect them. Why do we treat our past this way? Why do we forget our heroes? Because it was all in the past and we know everything we need to know? Five young girls go to war to defend their land. Five different destinies, five unequal characters merge in unison in the fight against the fascists. Rita Osyanina is a young mother and widow who did not have time to enjoy family happiness. She is the most courageous and fearless, responsible and serious.
Galya Chetvertak is an orphanage and funny girl who dreams of becoming a great artist. Sonya Gurvich is an ordinary student, an excellent student, in love with a boy and engrossed in poetry. All of them are bright individual personalities who have experienced severe grief and strive for only one thing - to serve the fatherland. And the girls succeeded. They receive an important task together with commander Vaskov, they are all brave, fearless, and courageous. Young beautiful heroines, full of strength and health, die one by one. Rita was caught by grenade fragments, Zhenya was riddled with machine gun shots, Sonya was killed with a dagger in the heart... These terrible, painful deaths did not shake the confidence of the girls, did not force them to betray their homeland, did not force them to lose courage.
Losing his comrades in arms, the foreman begins to understand how much they meant to him, with their girlish laughter, feminine jokes, and youthful enthusiasm. He admires their strength and fearlessness, their hatred of the enemy and love of life, their heroism and feat. The man mourns these terrible deaths: “What is it like to live now? Why is this so? After all, they don’t need to die, but give birth to children, because they are mothers!” How much sorrow, how much tenderness, how much pain in these words! And he took revenge on the Germans for the death of the girls, carrying with him throughout his life the memory of the valor of his “sisters.”
The events described in the story are events of local significance. It would seem that the girls’ feat did not affect the overall victory and was lost among the high-profile famous feats. It would seem that not every man would dare to do such an act, but this young girl, despite everything, took a risk and was able to help her colleagues. Even after the woman was seriously injured, she did not regret this act and only wanted victory for her homeland.
5) Respect for the Motherland
One of the Voskov heroes, after all the hostilities, blamed and insulted himself for a very long time for not being able to protect and save the weaker sex, who gave their lives on the battlefield. The man was afraid that because of the death of the soldiers, their fathers, husbands, and most importantly, children would rebel and begin blaming Voski for not being able to protect their women. The soldier did not believe that some White Sea Canal was worth so many departed souls. But at one point, one of the women, Rita, said that the man should stop self-flagellation, humiliation and constantly repent of this, since war is not a place for sadness and regret. All these women did not fight for ordinary roads or empty buildings, they fought for their homeland and for the freedom of an entire nation. One day something unexpected happened. The Germans appear. Sergeant Major Vaskov receives an order to catch up with the saboteurs and kill them. It is in this campaign that the main action of the story unfolds. Chasing the Germans through the forest, the girls, led by Vaskov, enter into an unequal battle with the Nazis. Vaskov sends Lisa back to the patrol for help. She drowned in the swamp.

The story is written very vividly and clearly. Optimistic girls are shown against the backdrop of war. Vaskov's victory symbolizes the victory of the Russians over the Germans.
At the end of the story, in the epilogue, Boris Vasiliev shows a couple of heroes - Albert Fedotich and his dad. Apparently, Albert is the same Alik, Rita’s son. Fedot Vaskov adopted him, the boy considers him his real father.
This means that despite all the difficulties and hardships, the Russian people are alive and will live.
The depiction of nature is very interesting. Beautiful scenes drawn by the author set off everything that happens. Nature seems to look at people with pity, with sympathy, as if saying: “People! Stop!”
“And the dawns here are quiet...” Everything will pass, but the place will remain the same. Quiet, silent, beautiful, only the marble gravestones will turn white, reminding of what has already passed.
This work serves as an excellent illustration of the events of the Great Patriotic War. Many generations, reading this story by Vasiliev, will remember the heroic struggle of Russian women in this war.
Why is this particular work my favorite? Probably because this writer is one of the best writers of our time. Probably because Boris Vasiliev managed to turn the topic of war on that unusual side, which is perceived especially painfully. After all, we, including myself, are accustomed to combining the words “war” and “men,” but here are women, girls and war. The story “And the Dawns Here Are Quiet...” is a beautiful and inseparable monument of heroism: five girls and a foreman, standing in the middle of the Russian land: forests, swamps, lakes, against a strong and enduring enemy who significantly outnumbers them.
