One of the guys at the fire was Ilyusha, who was about twelve years old. A boy with a dull appearance and an elongated face. He had a hooked nose and had poor vision: sitting by the fire, he constantly squinted. He was constantly thinking about something intensely, which is why his eyebrows were knitted and his lips were tightly compressed. Like most village boys, he had blond hair. They stuck out from under a felt hat. The boy often and nervously adjusted it, pulling it over his ears. He was dressed modestly but neatly. The black scroll was tied with a rope instead of a belt, and Ilyusha’s bast shoes and onuchi were new.
Despite such a young age, he already worked with his brother Avdey at a paper factory. Meager earnings made it possible to dress, but not to rest: shifts at the factory alternated with night grazing of horses. Often the boy had to spend the night with other workers right at the factory, since there was a lot of work, and going home would only waste time. Since he was hired at the factory, it means Ilyusha is a responsible, hardworking and physically strong, resilient guy. He is not afraid of hard work, but he is afraid of evil spirits.
He speaks in a weak, slightly hoarse voice, because he has to work in a rather noisy place. Ilyusha is the first to tell the story of the brownie. And then another scary story about Yermil and the evil lamb. He knows very well all the beliefs of the local residents, better than other guys, and does not doubt them at all. He also remembers well where a “lost place” is, understands the habits of the devil, and skillfully talks about terrible incidents.
At first calm, then he passionately gets involved in the story about Trishka. Ilyusha is from a believing family and is aware of Christ, albeit in an embellished manner. He remembers the “power of the god” protecting him when eerie, frightening sounds come from the darkness.
He calls Pavlusha “little”, although they are the same age. The experience of communicating with elders at the factory teaches the boy to be responsible and look after other guys.
When Pavlusha goes to fetch water, Ilyusha, sensing trouble, asks him to be careful. And when he returns, he says that hearing the voice of a drowned man is a bad omen. Ilyusha knew what he was saying. Serious and mature beyond his years, he foresaw misfortune.

Ilyusha is one of the heroes of the work “Bezhin Meadow”; the author portrayed this boy as a hardworking, attentive and very responsible person. The main work of this boy was that he and other guys herded horses at night, they drove them out into the field at night and until the morning they made sure that the horses did not run away and that wolves did not attack them.

The boy tells all these stories in a very interesting way; the boys listen to his stories with pleasure. Ilyusha himself looks like most children of his age, he is less than 12 years old, he is dressed very poorly, but at the same time, all his clothes are clean, his bast shoes are new, his outerwear is belted with a special belt.
The boy has a stern expression on his face because his eyebrows are constantly drawn together and his nose has a hump. Due to the painful sensation on the face, a constantly expressed concentration, severity and courage are obtained.
At just under 12 years old, the boy already works in a factory, tends a herd of horses, and spends all his free time helping his parents or doing various jobs. Ilyusha was always a serious, responsible and sympathetic guy. All the guys who knew him were confident in the responsiveness and help that Ilyusha would always provide.
He was not only a serious, but also a responsible young man, who could be described as a little man. Ilyusha’s character is completely consistent with that of a man; his hard work and seriousness give him even more responsibility and adult reasoning.
Ilyusha is described very briefly in Turgenev’s story, but upon careful reading, one can determine the main character traits of this boy. His life priorities, and at the same time, his love for stories about terrible events shows that this is a simple boy.
After all, if you carefully read the description of Ilyusha, you might immediately think that an adult man will soon appear before the readers, but no, this is a boy with a strong and responsible character like a man.
The author really likes Ilyusha, because he writes about him with such an enthusiastic expression, which means he approves of the fact that a boy at the age of 12 is ready to become a true man, responsible, serious and hardworking.

Finding himself in the role of a lost hunter in the Tula province, the narrator found lodgings for the night near a fire that was lit by several peasant children. Their usual nightly activity - escorting a herd of horses - did not surprise him. Due to lack of funds, many children of poor families found a similar type of income.
However, watching them from the side, the author became fascinated by their stories, meanwhile noticing every feature of the boys’ characters. Ilyusha told the most colorful and frightening stories. He had a good memory, thanks to which he could tell about any belief and story associated with him.
Twelve-year-old Ilyusha looked like a gloomy, tense man who constantly squinted, as if he was deciding an important issue. The uncertainty that left its mark on his face was accompanied by his voice, which was characterized by a husky tone. With this look, he told stories that struck fear into those present near the night fire.
However, the image of a quiet, timid, insecure boy changes when it comes to previously unknown scary stories related to the dead. Thanks to his tall tales, he became the center of everyone's attention. The main characters of his stories were drowned people and goblins.
With the onset of dusk, Ilyusha became the life of the party. Not everyone believed what they heard, but each of the guys listened carefully to every word so as not to be left out.
From Ilyusha’s story about his life, it becomes clear that the boy is very hardworking. He works every day at a paper mill, which he proudly tells his comrades about. Unlike other shepherd boys, he is distinguished by great emotionality, which is associated with a tendency to believe in superstitions.
The boy's neat appearance set him apart from the rest, although every detail of his clothing also spoke of a lack in the family. It was obvious that he had many relatives. He knew firsthand about need and hunger. Such living conditions, on the one hand, strengthened his character, thanks to which the boy could be compared with an adult man, on the other hand, they caused chronic fatigue at such an early age, as evidenced by his appearance.
A kind, simple-looking boy, he actually had an unusually strong character, determination and fortitude. Thanks to portrait sketches (“a hump nose, a slightly elongated, blind face”), the content of his stories, and his work activity, a complete, amazing image of this boy was created.

Essay Characteristics and image of Ilyusha
Many writers try to convey in their works everything they see, as realistically and in detail as possible. Such writers have always been highly valued, since they are, as it were, exceptions from the total number of literary figures.
One of these exceptions was Turgenev. This man was a shining example of a writer’s ability to convey what surrounded him through his dexterity in using words. He could always convey what he wanted in the most concise manner. One of his strengths was the description of characters and images in his works. All his readers have always noticed his pedantic attention to detail in images and forms of their manifestation.
Almost all of his works are like this. But we can single out one thing that can be called the most obvious representative of this trend in the author’s works. This is the work “Bezhin Meadow”. In it, the author tells us the story of a small group of village children who spend their time day after day, trying to spend it as best and productively as possible. Through their images, he tries to convey their feelings, how they think and what guides them in life.
One of these characters is Ilyusha. Ilyusha is a peasant child, one of a common group of children. Outwardly, he is a boy with pleasant facial features, a small face, and overall facial features.
By character, as his friends describe, he is a brave boy who has always strived for something more than he has now. In his young years, he is already a very purposeful guy who truly believes in his bright future. He tries to get to this bright future as quickly as possible, which is why he works tirelessly.

The image and characteristics of the hero Ilyusha
Ilyusha is one of the main characters in the work “Bezhin Meadow”. The twelve-year-old boy is distinguished by a precocious sense of responsibility and extraordinary hard work.
At night he and other guys graze horses. The children's task is to ensure that their charges do not get lost and are not attacked by wolves. Ilyusha really likes this activity and at the same time it is work for him.
This story is told from the perspective of a hunter lost in the forest. Trying to find his way late at night, he accidentally came across five peasant children grazing a herd of horses. The hunter asked to spend the night by their fire. When the guys allowed him to stay, he pretended to fall asleep, while he quietly eavesdropped and spied on the children, and from these observations of the hunter this work was created.
Five friends light a fire in a night meadow and tell each other all sorts of horror stories: about the dead, goblins, water creatures. No one knows whether this is fiction or true, but it’s still creepy to listen to such stories in the wilderness of the night.
Ilyusha is the most passionate storyteller, his voice is quiet and hoarse, which makes his stories take on an even more sinister tone. Ilyusha is an expert on all local beliefs and dangerous places where you can easily meet a goblin, for example. He himself firmly believes in all his stories, and the guys listen to him spellbound and with great interest. From some of his stories you can guess that Ilyusha himself is also a little afraid of any evil spirits; from some of his expressions it becomes clear that the boy is from a believing family.
The boy's facial expression is always serious and not childishly concentrated. A hooked nose, raised eyebrows, sun-bleached blond hair. Ilyusha dresses poorly, but neatly and cleanly. The only new things he wears are bast shoes and onuchi.
In addition to grazing horses at night, the boy and his brother work in a paper factory. The factory foreman cannot get enough of workers like the brothers. Often he asks them to stay to work overtime and then the brothers spend the night right in the workshop. Their wages are negligible, but still better than nothing.
Among the guys herding horses at night, Ilyusha stands out with some superiority, although they are all the same age. From the fact that he was hired to work at the factory, it follows that adults trust him and see that he is physically strong and resilient.
The author of the work clearly respects Ilyusha; from everything it is clear that Ilyusha will grow into a real man, hard-working and responsible, on whom you can always rely.

I.S. Turgenev, describing the extraordinary beauty of Russian nature in his works, also pays a lot of attention to the depiction of people from different walks of life. The peasants, whose hardships of life he describes in many of his stories, are no exception.
One of these works is the story “Bezhin Meadow” from the series “Notes of a Hunter”.
The story is told on behalf of a lost hunter who met at night with a group of peasant boys grazing a herd of horses. The author describes the images of each of the five children, one of whom is twelve-year-old Ilyusha.
Ilyusha’s appearance does not stand out in anything special: blond hair, a hooked nose, narrowed eyes. Frown eyebrows gave the impression of preoccupied concentration on something. From the boy's clothes one could tell that his family was very poor. But, despite his poverty, the boy is dressed neatly and neatly.
Despite such a young age, Ilya works at a paper factory with his brother. Hard physical labor does not frighten the boy; he understands all the responsibility entrusted to him for helping his family.
From the author’s description, it is clear that Ilyusha has leadership qualities, being able to attract the attention of others. Knowledge of many stories about evil spirits, ghosts, as well as the ability to colorfully retell them, allows him to capture the attention of the children.
The boys listen with interest to Ilya's stories about the brownie at the factory, about the talking lamb, and the elusive Antichrist Trishka. The boy not only retells stories, but also competently answers curious questions from his friends.
Among other things, Ilyusha understands various signs and beliefs. Hearing frightening sounds coming from the darkness, Ilya mentions the protection of the “power of the cross”, it is clear that he is from a believing family. Judging by the fact that the boy remembers all the incidents that happened in the village and all the “lost” places, he has an excellent memory.
If the boy had the opportunity to receive a normal education, he could in the future become a writer, collecting and processing folk tales.
Describing a simple-looking village boy, the author managed to show his decisive, persistent character and incredible fortitude.
In his story, Turgenev showed the life of peasant children working in the fields, in factories, grazing horses at night and at the same time, knowing how to find time for entertainment. Accustomed to work from childhood and familiar with all the hardships of a hard peasant life, the boys did not really believe in the horror stories with which they frightened each other, knowing what they should really be afraid of.
How to relate to beliefs
Ilyusha loves everything mysterious, sincerely and selflessly believes in all sorts of miracles, and is afraid of unknown forces. He has a poetic nature.
Ilyusha remembers all the conversations and stories of adults he heard about evil spirits and mysterious incidents and unconditionally believes that everything was as these people said (hunger Ermila, grandmother Ulyana, grandfather Trofimych).
When Ilyusha was telling the boys the first story, his story was interrupted by the arrival of a lost hunter at the fire. Continuing the story that he heard the brownie, Ilya said that no one could see him. One day there was a lot of work, and he, his brother Avdey and other guys stayed overnight at the factory, in the roller (it is located near the dam, under the wheel). When Ilyusha’s brother began to talk about the brownie, suddenly someone came in at the top of the wheel, the wheel spun a little, then someone began to descend, the door opened - and there was no one behind it. Then various objects began to move, someone seemed to go to the door and coughed and choked like a sheep. Ilyusha told all this in detail and with enthusiasm.
During the night, Ilya told several more stories that he heard from adults:

- about the late master - from grandfather Trofimych,
- about fortune telling on parent's Saturday - from grandmother Ulyana,
- about the devil - from a man from the village where Ilyusha lives.
In addition to these stories, the boy told about the Antichrist (Trishka), about the merman. Ilyusha knows such stories and beliefs more than any other boy, and treats them with faith and fear. He is convinced that all this is true.
When other boys tell similar stories, Ilyusha constantly clarifies, corrects their story, wants to show that he knows better than anyone about beliefs and traditions.
He quickly and enthusiastically picks up any conversation about miracles. From Ilya’s stories it is clear that he has a very good memory, imagination, and passion for folk beliefs.
