Aivazovsky's paintings have always fascinated both art connoisseurs and ordinary visitors to museums and exhibitions. His painting “The Black Sea” was no exception. When viewing the painting, you can feel the violence of the elements, as if the sea is actually swaying on the artist’s canvas.
When you first look at the picture, you immediately notice the division of the canvas into two parts. Water and air. The struggle of the elements. A raging and harsh sea that never seems to calm down, despite the fact that the storm is just beginning. The enchanting sky, which turns white in the distance and is a symbol of calm in the picture. It seems that they cannot be neighbors, but Aivazovsky juxtaposed these two elements together in a harmonious duet.
In the distance a small ship can be seen on the canvas. In comparison with the overall picture of what is happening, we notice how small and insignificant a person is compared to the indomitable elements. The ship is in their absolute power.
Of course, the main thing on the canvas is the endless sea. It is depicted in a state of just beginning storm, but already foreshadowing a serious storm and trouble for the sailors who dared to go to sea in such weather. The sea looks alive, real and with soul. In the picture we can even see gusts of wind that specially drive the waves, accelerating them.
The entire composition was written in greenish-gray and lead-gray shades, which help us plunge into the abyss of sea excitement and fully experience it, as if we were standing on the shore and observing this picture with our own eyes. Such a not very loaded picture has a serious emotional impact on its viewers.
Only Aivazovsky could so subtly convey the true nature of the sea. This painting is a collection of all the creative experience of the artist, who forever remained in history the best in his style. Even for modern artists his style remains a mystery.

There is probably no person who does not know Aivazovsky. He has the most beautiful paintings that are admired by art connoisseurs, as well as ordinary people. The painting “Black Sea” brings the same admiration. If you look closely at this picture for a long time, you can imagine that the waves are moving and the storm is approaching stronger and stronger. He paints each of his paintings from memory or from inner vision.
Over the years, he has written on a huge number of different topics, but almost all of them are related to the sea. He could write a calm sea, large mountains, and below is the sea, there is bad weather at sea and it is better not to go to sea in such weather, but one boat found itself in the middle of this bad weather.
When you glance at the picture, it seems to be divided into two stripes. The first half includes the sea, but the other half includes the sky. There is a constant struggle between the elements here. The sea constantly sways and rages and the storm grows and grows. And it will never calm down. But far in the distance you can see a beautiful blue sky and black clouds running across it. It brings peace. Or maybe the bad weather will get worse at night and a thunderstorm will begin.
Somewhere in the distance, a small ship is barely visible, which did not know that there would be a storm and set off on a journey. Thanks to this picture, you can understand that a person will never curb the elements that are depicted in the picture. Even a ship cannot cope with it and all that remains for it is to move towards its port and not succumb to the storm.
The first thing that catches your eye when you look at the picture is the sea. And from it you can understand that the storm is just beginning and the consequences from it can be terrible, especially for those who are on the road. The picture even shows gusts of wind, which sometimes intensify and then stop.
The painting contains greenish-gray and lead-gray shades. Thanks to this, everyone can experience the weather that prevails here. It is impossible to find a single bright color on it.
Only one person managed to feel it all, and also convey their emotions to the picture. Not all modern artists understand the style in which Aivazovsky painted.

The author conceived the plot of the picture to be quite simple: his favorite sea and sky. What is striking is the sea horizon line, which divides the picture almost in half, as if balancing both elements - air and water. That's all.
Actually, this is where the description of this plot could be completed, leaving the viewer to independently experience the feelings and emotions that arise during viewing, if not for one circumstance. Only the barely discernible silhouette of a ship in the distance, on the very horizon, leading the imagination even further.
But you notice the boat not at first sight, but after a closer acquaintance, when the gaze itself moves away to the horizon, understanding and feeling the receding space.
The painting “Black Sea” was created by marine painter I.K. Aivazovsky in 1881. The canvas size is 149 by 208 cm.
To put it simply, the marine painter decided to show the simply beautiful, incredible expanse of water with heavy emerald waves and a cloudy sky. But this is the highlight and essence of the plot itself.
Of course, Ivan Aivazovsky is a unique person of his kind, whose unsurpassed talent was revealed essentially in the display of sea picturesque views.

Ivan Konstantinovich must be included in the group of artists for whom the sea element became a source of inspiration. He drew stories on different topics, but they were always closely intertwined with the sea. It could be calm sea weather, mountains rising above the sea and shrouded in haze, a stormy sea, lumps of dirty gray foam, a ship in distress or already defeated by the sea elements.

Among a whole galaxy of paintings on a marine theme, one cannot help but mention a painting with the simple title “Black Sea”. This painting does not quite fit into the artist’s concept. In it, the viewer will not see the “fighting with the waves” so beloved by Aivazovsky.
In this painting, the sea itself is the main character. It is depicted in a special way. The black sea is agitated... Moreover, Ivan Konstantinovich so skillfully depicted the running of the waves that you involuntarily catch yourself thinking. That you, the viewer, are at the mercy of the sea elements. It’s so fascinating to see slightly foamy waves, carrying the viewer forward with them into the future.
If you look closely at the canvas by Aivazovsky, it is easy to notice that he subtly conveys the transition from sea to sky. And the sky is not the last place on this canvas.
In general, clouds are depicted in the sky. But these are not harbingers of a thunderstorm. These are rather just the messengers of a cloudy day. And what will happen there at night - only God knows. It is quite possible that a storm will break out...
Suppose that these clouds will grow into thunderclouds that will cover the entire sky and they will spew out lightning and thunder and rain on the mortal earth... The colors used by the artist on the left side of the canvas help the viewer to guess about this.
Aivazovsky does not change his tradition as an artist. The sea has a natural greenish hue. The sky is blue, and the blueness is conveyed through the play of colors.
In general, the picture sets its viewer up for philosophical reflection. It does not fit a little into the canons of Ivan Konstantinovich’s seascape. It is possible that this picture lacks the fury of the elements. But still, it is rightfully one of the artist’s best paintings.

The sky is dark and gloomy, with a faint streak of light visible in the distance. Maybe it was the sun? Heavy, menacing clouds hang over the sea, as if they want to “measure their strength.” On the horizon, it seems that the sky completely merges with the sea and forms one whole. The struggle between two elements is clearly visible here.
If you look closely, on the left side of the picture, where the sky meets the horizon, you can see a small strip of land and a small ship that is trying to return to land before the storm arrives.
When you look at the picture, you clearly imagine the further development of events. Soon, the clouds will completely hang over the sea, the waves will become higher and will touch the clouds with their foamy tops. Thunderclaps will rip through the skies, and lightning will illuminate everything around. It will rain heavily.
I.K. Aivazovsky, through skillfully selected colors in the painting “The Black Sea,” was able to show all the greatness of the natural, sea element. No great master could achieve such accuracy in depicting natural processes. The canvas has incredible attractive power that you can look at it forever.

Many people admire the beauty of the sea or ocean when it is at rest, but every person looks at the rampant elements with caution and anxiety. Aivazovsky in his canvas “The Tempest” depicted for us a storm, a storm that tormented the poor boat.
The picture is painted in dark blue and gray tones, which show the tragedy of the situation. The abundance of gray tones with glimpses of blue shows that the storm has settled in for a long time. Against the background of such clouds and waves, the ship seems defenseless and tiny, so it cannot cope with the elements. A little to the side we see rocks, which the ship ran into, and people managed to climb onto the rocks. Unfortunately, no one knows how long the storm will last, so the fate of people is still unknown.
Seagulls persistently circle above the ship, hearing their prey and hoping to make a good profit during the storm. A little further away you can see a light shadow from another ship, which is also trying to resist the elements. In the background, through the clouds and waves, the outlines of a large city appear, but you still need to get to it.
The picture makes a strong impression that will stay with me for a long time. Aivazovsky showed us that it is useless to fight the elements. Unfortunately, sometimes neither high-rise buildings nor strong walls can protect us from the vagaries of nature. In such a situation, a person can only wait for the storm to subside.
Essay based on Aivazovsky’s painting “Storm on the Black Sea”
The painting “Storm at Sea at Night” was painted in 1849 by the famous painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky. The artist belongs to the marine painters, as he devoted all his work to creating paintings depicting the sea in all its manifestations. The general mood of the picture very truthfully conveys the state of the raging night sea, which plays with the sailboat as if it were a small sliver. It seems to me that the artist achieved this effect thanks to the precise choice of color and masterful execution.
In the background of the picture, I see a menacing night sky. The full moon appeared through the flying clouds and fragments of clouds. Having managed, only for a few moments, to break through the dense veil, she illuminates the doomed ship. I think that this light, although cold, still gives hope to the sailors for salvation.
The entire foreground of the picture is occupied by the raging sea. I see mighty waves coming one after another. The artist depicted the raging elements very realistically. Looking at the picture, I have a strong feeling that all the efforts of the ship’s crew are in vain. Huge riffles and seething foam on the crest of the waves look terrifying. In those places where the moon illuminates the waves, I realize the frightening depth of the sea. I believe this mood is caused by the fact that the famous marine painter used the play of light and shadow very well when he painted the picture.
A little to the left of the center of the picture, I see a ship that is resisting the ferocious onslaught of the waves with its last strength. Looking at the painting of the brilliant artist, I hear the screams of the doomed sailors and the crackling of wooden masts. These feelings arise for me thanks to the well-written details of the ship. Scraps of sails and cables, which I.K. Aivazovsky so vividly depicted, complement the general condition of the picture.
