What is Honor

Honor is loyalty to your principles, words, and above all to yourself. A person who has such a quality as honor is always responsible for his actions or mistakes and commands respect.

Just a few centuries ago, loss of honor required revenge. As an example, the duel between Pushkin and Dantes, when the first stood up for the honor of his lady, but ended up being killed. In the modern world you will not see such behavior, with rare exceptions (wild tribes). However, a person’s desire to defend his dignity is relevant both now and in the future.

In the Middle Ages, knights were called men of honor, and those who engaged in fraud or were informers were considered dishonest individuals.

In historical reports and literature of our state, honor often goes hand in hand with heroism and exploits. Honor is made up of several factors: the ability to admit one’s own wrongdoing; willingness to stand up for others; the ability to help without any benefit for oneself; desire to repay the debt as soon as possible.

Lermontov's main character Pechorin is also familiar with the concept of honor firsthand. In a duel with his former friend Grushnitsky, he gives the cadet the opportunity to ask for forgiveness and cancel the fight. However, Grushnitsky does not heed him and refuses. Let us remember Pushkin’s duel with Dantes, who was pursuing the poet’s wife. This provided food for gossip. He was a worthy person, because he managed to win the respect of the yard boys. “The Bird Cherry Grandfather” taught the children not only various techniques and tricks of the sports game, but also compliance with all the rules and real masculine behavior. I remember the novel by A.S. Pushkin "The Captain's Daughter". The characters of most of Pushkin's heroes are revealed in their entirety in moments of danger, when the Belogorsk fortress is attacked by Pugachev's army. Captain Mironov dies, but remains faithful to his officer's duty - he does not swear allegiance to the impostor. Grinev is ready to follow his example. Vasilisa Egorovna shares the fate of her husband - such is the wife’s duty. Savelich, risking his own life, begs Pugachev to save Peter: the duty of a servant is to serve his master to the end. These heroes demonstrate loyalty to their principles, which means they can be called people of honor. They deserve enormous respect, unlike, for example, Shvabrin, who, saving his life, betrays his noble duty and goes over to the side of the Pugachevites.

Secondly, by the word “honor” I mean an untarnished reputation, that is, a positive assessment given to a person by those around him. Now for many of us, public opinion is an unnecessary stereotype. But, for example, in the nineteenth century, a damaged reputation could turn into a tragedy. In those days, there was a concept of “noble honor” - they valued it, fought for it and died in duels.

Thirdly, honor for me is inextricably linked with the concept of honesty. It is no coincidence that these words have the same root. A man of honor is truthful with others and with himself. He will never change the truth and will defend his point of view, even if his position does not coincide with generally accepted views. This is Chatsky, the hero of A.S. Griboedov’s comedy “Woe from Wit,” who managed to resist the conservative and ignorant representatives of Famus society.

So, honor is a multifaceted concept; it can have different interpretations. But what is certain is that this is one of the eternal and unshakable values of humanity.

Through these examples we see how highly valued honor was in ancient times. Today, a person with such high qualities can safely call himself unique; it is almost a miracle to meet such a person. The problem in our society is precisely that we take this for granted. Honor should not be perceived by us as a quality that is available only to a few. Like the characters in The Captain's Daughter, we need to follow our principles and be guided by our values. Harmony is possible only when we are honest with people, learn to listen and draw conclusions. One little lie can destroy the lives of dozens of people, and by getting rid of such a burden, we will become a little closer to our dreams. A man of honor is not just some pathetic concept; behind it lies a great force that leads people, makes them better, reveals unprecedented potential in them and, in the end, makes us strive for what we want.

When we are asked what qualities a real person should have, we, without hesitation, talk about the beauty of moral character, moral virtues and honor. What do we mean by the word honor? For many of us, this is inner nobility, conscientiousness, and honesty.

The author of this text, D. Granin, raises the problem of honor and asks about the relevance of this concept in modern society.

Indeed, today the very concept of “honor” is perceived as a relic of the past. It leaves the tongue. In everyday speech one rarely hears “defended honor”, “preserved honor”. He could not leave Shvabrin’s slander against Masha unpunished, so he challenged him to a duel. Shvabrin is the complete opposite of Grinev: he is a person for whom the concept of honor and nobility does not exist at all. A.S. Pushkin wrote the story “The Captain's Daughter” in 1836. This was done by a nobleman, from a good and noble family. Where is Shvabrin’s honor, why is his conscience silent. Is it really possible to slander and slander a person by taking advantage of ignorance? For Shvabrin it is possible. He doesn’t see anything strange in the fact that his opponent will suffer, the main thing is that Masha stays with him. But it is impossible to force yourself to love yourself. Then he does everything to force Masha to abandon her groom, and then separate her from Grinev. Shvabrin goes over to the side of the rebels to save his life. And here the nobleman’s honor does not prevent him from serving Pugachev. Masha is now in his power, he can do anything, but Masha does not want to forget her beloved, abandon him in order to save her life. She is even ready to die, but refuses Shvabrin’s proposal and does not marry him. Here his attitude to honor and dignity is once again defined; he is capable of anything, any betrayal. Grinev behaves completely differently. Peter is incapable of betraying; he even tells his enemy to his face what he thinks, without fear of death. For the sake of his beloved, Grinev goes to Pugachev’s camp, he saves Masha from Shvabrin’s infamy. Even under arrest, Peter cannot justify himself so as not to mention the name of his beloved. Only Masha’s timely meeting with the Empress solves the matter, he is sent home, his name is cleared.

Thus, it can be argued that a person’s honor is given so that he can keep it unsullied, without committing unworthy, vile deeds.

We often hear from everywhere that there is nothing more valuable than human life. I completely agree with this. Life is a gift that every person should accept with gratitude. But, often plunging into life with all its advantages and disadvantages, we forget that it is important not just to live life, but to do it with dignity.

Unfortunately, in the modern world, concepts such as honor, nobility, justice and dignity have lost their meaning. People often behave in ways that make us ashamed of our entire human race. We have learned to fly like birds, swim like fish, now we just have to learn to live like real people, for whom honor is more valuable than our own lives.

Numerous dictionaries give different definitions of the word “honor,” but they all boil down to a description of the best moral qualities that are highly valued in a normal society. For a person who values self-esteem and his reputation, it is worse to lose honor than to die.

Many writers, including Mikhail Sholokhov, addressed the issue of honor. I remember his story “The Fate of Man” and the main character Andrei Sokolov, who for me is one of the best examples of a man of honor and dignity. Having survived the war, terrible losses, captivity, he remained a real person for whom justice, honor, loyalty to the Motherland, kindness and humanity became the main principles in life.

With trembling in my heart, I remember the moment when, in captivity, he refused to drink to the German victory, but drank to his death. Honor has no age, gender, status, or financial status. Honor is something that is inherent only to a reasonable person, an individual. And it’s really worth taking care of it, because restoring a tarnished name is much more difficult than living honestly and decently every day.
