What is the meaning of the work The Enchanted Place. “Enchanted Place”, analysis of the story by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol

Summary: Gogol, “The Enchanted Place” (introduction)

This story happened a long time ago, when the narrator was still a child. His father, taking one of his four sons, left to trade tobacco in the Crimea. Three children, their mother and grandfather remained on the farm, guarding the bashtan (a vegetable garden sown with watermelons and melons) from uninvited guests. One evening a cart full of merchants drove past them. Among them were many of my grandfather’s acquaintances. Having met, they rushed to kiss and remember the past. Then the guests lit their pipes and the refreshments began. It became fun, let's go dancing. Grandfather also decided to shake the old days and show the Chumaks that he still has no equal in dancing. Then something unusual began to happen to the old man. But the next chapter (its summary) will talk about this.

Gogol, "The Enchanted Place". Developments

The grandfather went wild, but as soon as he reached the cucumber patch, his legs suddenly stopped obeying him. He scolded, but there was no point. Laughter was heard from behind. He looked around, but there was no one behind him. And the place around is unfamiliar. In front of him lies a bare field, and to the side is a forest, from which some kind of long pole sticks out. For a moment it seemed to him that there was a clerk, and that the pole visible from behind the trees was a dovecote in the garden of a local priest. There is darkness around him, the sky is black, there is no month. The grandfather walked across the field and soon came across a small path. Suddenly a light lit up on one of the graves ahead, then went out. Then a light flashed elsewhere. Our hero was delighted, deciding that it was a treasure. His only regret was that he didn’t have a shovel now. “But that’s not a problem either,” thought the grandfather. “After all, you can notice this place somehow.” He found a large branch and threw it on the grave, on which a light was burning. Having done this, he returned to his tower. Only it was already late, the children were asleep. The next day, without saying a word to anyone and taking a spade with him, the restless old man went to the priest’s garden. But the problem was that now he didn’t recognize these places. There is a dovecote, but there is no threshing floor. The grandfather turns around: the field is there, but the dovecote is gone. He returned home with nothing. And the next day, when the old man, having decided to dig up a new ridge on the tower, hit the place where he didn’t want to dance with a shovel, suddenly the pictures in front of him changed, and he found himself in the very field where he saw the lights. Our hero was delighted and ran up to the grave he had noticed earlier. There was a large stone lying on it. Having thrown it away, the grandfather decided to sniff the tobacco. Suddenly someone sneezed loudly above him. The old man looked around, but no one was there. He began to dig the ground at the grave and dug out a cauldron. He was delighted and exclaimed: “Ah, that’s where you are, my dear!” The same words were squealed by a bird's head from a branch. And behind her a ram's head bleated from the tree. A bear looked out of the forest and roared the same phrase. Before the grandfather had time to say new words, the same faces began to echo him. The old man got scared, grabbed the cauldron and ran away. The next chapter below (its summary) will tell you what happened to the unlucky hero next.

Enchanted place (story)

The narrator explains

The story dates back to when he was still a child. A father and one of his sons went to the Crimea to sell tobacco, leaving his wife and three sons at home and his grandfather to guard the tower - a profitable business, there were a lot of travelers, and best of all, Chumaks who told outlandish stories. One evening, several carts of Chumaks arrive, all old acquaintances of their grandfather. We kissed, lit a cigarette, started talking, and then there was a treat. The grandfather demanded that the grandchildren dance and amuse the guests, but he did not endure it for long, he went himself. The grandfather danced gloriously, making such pretzels that it was a wonder, until he reached one place, near a bed of cucumbers. This is where his legs became. He scolded and started again - to no avail. Someone laughed from behind. He looked around, but didn’t recognize the place: both the bashtan and the Chumaks - everything was gone, there was just one smooth field around. Still, I understood where he was, behind the priest’s garden, behind the volost clerk’s threshing floor. “This is where the evil spirits dragged me!” I started to get out, it wasn’t a month, I found a path in the dark. A light flashed on a grave nearby, and another a little further away. "Treasure!" - the grandfather decided and heaped a large branch for a sign, since he did not have a spade with him. He returned late to the bashtan, there were no Chumaks, the children were sleeping[2].

The next evening, grabbing a spade and shovel, he headed to the priest’s garden. So, according to all the signs, he went out into the field to his former place: the dovecote sticks out, but the threshing floor is not visible. I went closer to the threshing floor - the dovecote disappeared. And then it started to rain, and the grandfather couldn’t find a place, so he ran back cursing. The next evening he went with a spade to dig a new bed, and, passing the damned place where he could not dance, he hit the spade in his heart, and ended up in that very field. He recognized everything: the threshing floor, the dovecote, and the grave with a piled up branch. There was a stone on the grave. Having dug around, the grandfather rolled him away and was about to sniff the tobacco, when someone sneezed over his head. I looked around - there was no one. The grandfather began to dig and found the boiler. “Ah, my dear, that’s where you are!” - exclaimed the grandfather. The bird's nose said the same thing, and the ram's head from the top of the tree, and the bear. “It’s scary to say a word here,” muttered the grandfather, and after him the bird’s nose, and the ram’s head, and the bear. Grandfather wants to run - there is a bottomless steep slope under his feet, a mountain looms over his head. Grandfather threw the boiler, and everything became the same. Deciding that evil spirits were only frightening, he grabbed the cauldron and began to run.

At this time, both the children and the mother who came were wondering where the grandfather had gone. After dinner, the mother went to pour out the hot slop, and a barrel was crawling towards her: apparently, one of the children, naughty, was pushing her from behind. Her mother threw slop at her. It turned out that it was my grandfather. They opened my grandfather’s cauldron, and in it there was rubbish, squabbles and “I’m ashamed to say what it is.” From that time on, the grandfather swore to believe the devil, blocked the damned place with a fence, and when the neighboring Cossacks hired a field for a chestnut tree, something sprouted in the enchanted place that it was impossible to make out: a watermelon is not a watermelon, a pumpkin is not a pumpkin, a cucumber is not a cucumber... the devil knows what it is!

Gogol, "The Enchanted Place". Ending

And my grandfather’s houses are already missed. We sat down for dinner, but he still wasn’t there. After the meal, the hostess went into the garden to pour out the slops. Suddenly she saw a barrel climbing towards her. She decided it was someone's joke and poured the slop right on her. But it turned out that it was the grandfather. The cauldron he brought with him contained only squabbles and rubbish. From then on, the old man swore not to believe in devils anymore, and surrounded the cursed place in his garden with a fence. They said that when the local Chumaks hired this field for melons, God knows what grew on this piece of land, it was impossible to even make out.

More than a century and a half ago, N.V. Gogol wrote “The Enchanted Place.” A brief summary of it is presented in this article. Now it is no less popular than many years ago.

The great Russian classic N.V. Gogol knew such stories in huge numbers. “The Enchanted Place” (a brief summary of this work will be presented below) is one of these works. It is part of the two-volume series of stories “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”. This one was first printed in 1832 in the second volume.

I really liked this story, which the author called a true story. Of course, I didn’t quite believe this story; it still seemed like a fairy tale to me, but it was interesting to read. And the description of the evil spirits at the grave even brought a smile, although I wouldn’t want to encounter something like that myself at night.

Read a summary, a brief retelling of the fairy tale “The Enchanted Place”

The sexton tells an incident from his youth. His father took him to sell tobacco, and the narrator, grandfather, mother and two brothers remained at home. For the summer, the grandfather went to live in a kuren near the road, and took the boys with him. And then one day the Chumaks, six carts, appeared along the road. Ahead walked a chumak with a large gray mustache. He recognized his grandfather and said hello. The grandfather was delighted with his old acquaintances and went in to kiss. Everyone sat down, took watermelons, and the grandfather ordered them to play the nozzle and dance. And even my grandfather’s legs were bursting to dance. And so he could not stand it and rushed to trim his knees. I accelerated, reached the middle, but my knee didn’t work out. He turned around, came back, reached the same place again - it didn’t work. The grandfather swore at Satan, and lo and behold, the place around was unfamiliar. The grandfather took a closer look, saw the priest’s dovecote, and got out onto the path. It goes on, and the night is dark, impenetrable. Suddenly a candle was lit at the grave - there was treasure there. The grandfather regretted that there was neither a shovel nor a spade, he piled a huge log on the grave and went home. I came home, the Chumaks had already left, and my grandfather fell asleep. The next day, towards evening, the grandfather took a shovel and went to the priest’s garden. He walked and wandered, but couldn’t find the grave. And then it started to rain. Grandfather came home wet, lying there, swearing with the last words. The next day, the grandfather walked through the melon patch as if nothing had happened, covering the watermelons. And in the evening I walked past the enchanted place with a shovel, couldn’t stand it, walked into the middle and hit it with a spade. And again I found myself in the same place near the grave. And the candle burns again. The grandfather approached the grave. He sees a huge stone lying on it. The grandfather dug up the stone and pushed it off the grave. The grandfather stopped to take a break, poured tobacco on his fist, just brought it to his nose, someone behind him sneezed, he sprayed it all over the grandfather. Grandfather turns around - no one. Grandfather began to dig. I dug up the pot and was delighted. “There you are, my dear,” he says. And the bird's nose repeats the same words. And then a ram's head from the top of the tree. And a bear from behind a tree. Grandfather became scared, and the bird's nose, the ram and the bear all repeated after him. The grandfather got scared and looked around. And the night is terrible - no month, no stars. Yes, some mug peeks out from behind the mountain, his eyes are red, his nose is like fur in a forge. Grandfather threw the cauldron and was just about to run when everything disappeared, everything became quiet. The grandfather understood that evil spirits only frighten. With difficulty he pulled out the cauldron and ran as fast as he could. And only at the priest’s garden he stopped. Meanwhile, everyone at home was wondering where grandfather had disappeared to. The mother had already come from the farm with dumplings, everyone had already dined, and the mother washed the cauldron and was looking for a place to pour the slop. He looks like a barrel is coming, someone must be pushing it from behind. The mother decided that the boys were playing around and poured the hot slop directly into the barrel. When someone starts yelling in a deep voice, lo and behold, it’s grandfather. He wiped himself off, had a fight, and puts out the boiler. Wealth promises. He opens it, and there is rubbish, garbage, dirt. The grandfather spat and ordered never to believe in evil spirits. As soon as he appeared, he immediately began to be baptized. And he ordered to throw rubbish and rubbish onto the damned place. Good watermelons grew there.

/ / / What does Gogol’s story “The Enchanted Place” teach?

Tale by N.V. Gogol’s “Enchanted Place” is not just a “fable” about evil spirits, but an instructive story. In it, the writer implements the idea that no one can make money through dishonest labor. It is revealed gradually in a plot with real and fantastic events.

This instructive conclusion appears at the end of the story, before which the attentive reader can find many more wise life lessons. Our people have long believed in evil spirits. Indeed, different, sometimes completely incredible, things have happened to people, so there were reasons for caution. Modern people take the devil lightly, but sometimes thoughts arise that we need to be more careful.

The sexton, the grandson of the main character of the work, was convinced that if the devil wants to “faint” a person, he will do it without difficulty. And it’s good if a person gets away with nothing but deception, like Grandfather Maxim. The sexton understands that everything could have ended worse, so he warns his listeners to get involved with the devil.

The main character got into trouble with the devil's place because he liked to brag. He started dancing to show the Chumaks that he was still agile. Several times the grandfather tried to dance in the enchanted place, but nothing worked. He repeated his attempts several times until he provoked the devil. This incident makes braggarts think about their behavior. Sometimes it is wiser to stop in time to protect yourself from trouble.

N.V. Gogol in “The Enchanted Place” once again shows what courage and perseverance are capable of. Grandfather Maxim was not afraid of either Satan or the damned place. He boldly entered the battle for the treasure. Bravery helped the hero get home, and even find the treasure. If the old man had been afraid, he would most likely have gotten lost, since the devil would have continued to fool him.

The hero did not go for the treasure for his own benefit. He thought of pleasing his grandchildren with sweets and zhupans. It can be argued that his love for his loved ones helped him find the treasure. Thus, the writer once again proves that a bright feeling can work miracles.

The episode in which the grandfather appears with a barrel in his hands is depicted in a humorous tone. The old man enthusiastically tells his grandchildren that he brought wealth for them, and then discovers the garbage. In this episode, the author ridicules the thirst for easy money and argues that one can only earn money that will go to good use through honest work.

After this incident, grandfather Maxim warns his grandchildren from dealing with the unclean. This warning should be taken not only in a literal, but also in a figurative meaning. There is no need to go for easy money, as you may end up with nothing.

Christians have long revered God, believing that he can protect from any misfortune. So it is in the story by N.V. Gogol’s grandfather Maxim, after meeting the devil, turns to the Lord and calls on others to do the same. This detail is also a kind of lesson, especially for Christians.

Tale by N.V. Gogol can be perceived in different ways: both as truth and as fiction for gullible listeners. This is a personal matter for each reader. But it’s worth remembering the lessons given by the writer.

The story “The Enchanted Place” by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol is part of the collection of stories “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”. The story is told from the point of view of the sexton - about the story that happened to his grandfather Maxim, when the sexton himself was only 11 years old.

N.V. Gogol is the author of the stories - he is a real person living in the real world. He comes up with the plot of the story, the characters, gives them names, endows them with certain abilities, makes the characters evil or good. The author gives a name to his creation, breaks the story into chapters and parts, and comes up with endings.

In the story “The Enchanted Place,” the role of the narrator is played by a beekeeper, who was told about what happened by the sexton, in the same way as the author N.V. Gogol does not appear in this story. Grandfather Maxim told the story to the sexton himself.

This story tells how grandfather Maxim, dancing in front of his familiar Chumaks, near a bed of cucumbers, felt that his legs were becoming stiff and, unknown how, he ended up in an enchanted place, while he heard someone laughing behind him. Grandfather called this place devilish. He thought that there must be a treasure hidden there, he even saw the light of a flickering candle on one of the graves. Grandfather Maxim wanted to dig up the ground, but he had neither a shovel nor a spade with him. He decided to return with a shovel, but when he arrived, he could not find exactly the place where, in his opinion, the treasure was hidden. Since it started to rain, the grandfather wandered home empty-handed.

The next day, the grandfather took a spade and went to the very place in his garden where he could not dance, and hit the ground with the spade. Grandfather Maxim again found himself where the treasure was, started digging and found a pot. From time to time he spoke to himself, and someone repeated his own words after him. The grandfather was frightened and thought that the unclean one did not want to give up the treasure, but still brought the pot to his grandchildren. As a result, it turned out that there was not gold in the pot, but all sorts of rubbish. Since then, the grandfather fenced off the enchanted place with a fence and threw weeds and all sorts of waste there, and there was never a good harvest in that part of the garden. And if the grandfather noticed something unusual, he began to be baptized.

N.V. Gogol seemed to isolate himself from this story and thereby entrusted its telling to another person. I believe that in this way the writer wanted to show that he did not particularly believe in the authenticity of the story, but at the same time, the story conveys Russian folklore - what people believed in, what they were afraid of and how they fought against it. Reading this story, you feel like you are part of the story that happened and as if you hear the voice of the narrator himself.

The story “The Enchanted Place” by N.V. Gogol is included in the cycle of stories “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”. At the beginning of the entire cycle, N.V. Gogol says that he did not come up with these stories himself. The beekeeper Panko told him about them. And the beekeeper heard these stories from different people. It turns out that the true narrator of the story about the enchanted place is the beekeeper. But when you start reading the story, you find out that it was told to the beekeeper Panko by one sexton. The clerk himself was also not a participant in the events. Everything that happens in the story was told to him by his grandfather. After all, when all this happened, the clerk was only eleven years old. The story talks about an enchanted place. One day Grandfather Maxim was dancing and accidentally fell into an enchanted place. He immediately thought that there was a treasure there. He tried to dig it out several times. When he managed to do this, grandfather Maxim ran home. He climbed over the fence and was doused with slop. But he was still pleased. After all, he found a treasure. But when the boiler was opened, there was all sorts of nonsense. From then on, Grandfather Maxim bequeathed to everyone not to play with the devil. I think that if there had not been a hero-narrator, Grandfather Maxim, in this story, it would have turned out that all the events were true. And it turns out that the author talks about them as if from a third person. First, grandfather Maxim told the clerk, then the clerk told the beekeeper Panko, and only then Gogol wrote a story about it. It seems to me that the author does not believe this story is true. But he shows us the thoughts of the heroes of the story, what they believe. That’s why he came up with the figure of the beekeeper Panko. The fact that the story “The Enchanted Place” is constructed as a “story within a story” makes it possible not only to convey the thoughts and feelings of the characters, but also to recreate the atmosphere in which such stories were invented and told. It seems as if you hear the voice of the narrator and are immersed in the world of the heroes of N.V.’s story. Gogol.

Drafts of Gogol's story “The Enchanted Place” have not survived, so the exact date of its creation is unknown. It was most likely written in 1830. The story “The Enchanted Place” was included in the second book of the collection “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”.

The works in this collection have a complex hierarchy of narrators. The subtitle of the cycle indicates that “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka” was published by a certain beekeeper Rudy Panko. The stories “The Evening on the Eve of Ivan Kupala”, “The Missing Letter” and “The Enchanted Place” were told by the sexton of one church. This removal of the author from the participant in the events allowed Gogol to achieve a double effect. Firstly, to avoid accusations of writing “fables”, and secondly, to emphasize the folk spirit of the story.

The plot of the story is indeed based on the traditions of folklore, which were well known to the writer from childhood. Tales about “cursed places” and treasures are typical for the myth-making of many peoples. In Slavic legends, treasures were often sought in cemeteries. The desired grave was indicated by a suddenly lit candle. The motive of turning ill-gotten wealth into trash is also traditional for folk stories.

The originality of the story is manifested in the bright and rich language, which is generously dotted with Ukrainian words: “Chumaks”. "kuren". “bashtan”. "lads". .. An extremely accurate depiction of folk life, as well as the writer’s sparkling humor, create a special Gogolian atmosphere, full of poetic fantasy and slyness. It seems to the reader that he himself is among the sexton’s listeners. This effect is achieved through the narrator’s apt comments.

The main character of the story is Grandfather Maxim. The author describes it with kind irony. This is a lively, cheerful and active old man who loves to brag, dances dashingly and is not afraid of the devil himself. Grandfather really likes to listen to the stories of the Chumaks. He scolds his grandchildren, calling them “children of dogs.” but it is clear that the old man dotes on the tomboys. And they make fun of their grandfather in a friendly manner.

An important element of the story is the enchanted place itself. In our time it would be called an anomalous zone. Grandfather accidentally discovers a “bad spot” while dancing. As soon as the old man gets to his border “near the cucumber bed.” so the legs stop dancing on their own. And inside the enchanted place, strange things happen with space and time, which the grandfather attributes to the action of evil spirits.

The transition between the real and unreal world is depicted in the form of distorted space. The landmarks that the grandfather marks for himself in the anomaly zone do not appear in the real world. He just can’t find the point from which the priest’s dovecote and the hair clerk’s threshing floor are visible.

The cursed place has “its own character.” It does not like strangers, but does not harm uninvited guests, but only frightens them. There is also no particular damage from the penetration of irrational forces into the real world. The land in the anomalous zone simply does not produce crops. The enchanted place is not averse to playing with grandfather. Either he doesn’t allow you to come to him, despite all your efforts, then suddenly he opens up easily. The anomalous zone has many unusual means in its arsenal: suddenly bad weather, the disappearance of the month from the sky, monsters. Fear forces the old man to abandon his find for a while. But the thirst for profit turns out to be stronger, so otherworldly forces decide to teach the grandfather a lesson. In the cauldron, which was obtained with such difficulty in a cursed place, there were not jewelry, but “trash, squabbles and it’s a shame to say what it is.”

After such science, the hero of the story became very religious, swore to deal with evil spirits himself and punished all his loved ones. The grandfather takes revenge in his own way on the devil who fooled him so much. The old man fences off the enchanted place with a fence and throws out all the garbage from the tower there.

Such an ending is natural. Gogol shows that such treasures do not bring good. The grandfather receives not a treasure as a reward, but ridicule. Thus, the writer affirms the idea of the illusory nature of any wealth acquired by dishonest labor.

Pushkin. Herzen, Belinsky and other contemporaries of Gogol enthusiastically accepted “The Enchanted Place.” And today, with a smile and great interest, readers are immersed in a wonderful world where wit, poetry and fantasy reign, and the very soul of the people comes to life.

Gogol, "The Enchanted Place". Heroes and plot

Old grandfather Thomas was also a storyteller, and everyone pestered him: tell me, tell me. It was impossible to get rid of them. And so he began his next story with the fact that if the devilish power wants to make someone faint, it will definitely do it. When he was still a boy of about eleven, his father, taking his three-year-old brother with him, went to the Crimea to trade tobacco. The grandfather, mother, Thomas and his two brothers remained to live on the bashtan (a field with watermelons, melons and various vegetables). There was a road nearby, and one evening Chumakov transport workers passed by, traveling to the Crimea to buy goods - salt and fish. Grandfather recognized his old acquaintances among them. The guests settled down in the hut, lit the cradles and began to help themselves to melons. And then they began to remember the past. In the end it all came down to dancing.

Continuation of Gogol's work "The Enchanted Place"

The grandfather made his grandchildren dance - Foma and his brother Ostap, and even started dancing and ordered pretzels, but as soon as he reached the smooth place where the cucumber bed was, his legs stopped obeying him and stood up, he could not move them. Then the grandfather began to swear at the unclean woman, believing that these were her tricks. And then someone giggled behind him, he looked back, and behind him there were no Chumakov, no fields with vegetables.

What does Gogol talk about next? “The Enchanted Place” has a brief summary: the grandfather began to take a closer look at the area, and recognized the priest’s dovecote and the fenced plot of land of the volost clerk. Having found his bearings a little, he went to his garden, but saw that not far from the road there was a grave with a candle burning. The grandfather immediately thought it was a treasure and regretted that he did not have a shovel. He noticed this place so that he could return later, put a branch on the grave and went home.

Treasured treasure

Gogol’s “Enchanted Place” continues interestingly. The summary tells that the next day, late in the evening, as soon as it got dark, the main character went to look for the treasured grave with a mark. On the way, he saw the priest's dovecote, but for some reason there was no clerk's garden. When he stepped aside, the dovecote immediately disappeared. He realized that all this was the work of the evil one. And then it started to rain, the grandfather returned to his place.

In the morning he went to work in the beds with a shovel and, passing by that mysterious place where his legs stopped obeying him in the dance, he could not restrain himself and hit it with a shovel. And lo and behold, he is again in the place where his mark and grave are. Grandfather was glad that now he had a tool and would definitely dig up his treasure now. He approached the grave, and there was a stone lying there. The old man moved it and wanted to sniff the tobacco. But then someone sneezed nearby and even sprayed him. Grandfather realized that the devil did not like his tobacco. He began to dig and came across a pot. He exclaimed with joy: “There you are, my dear.” And then these words echoed, the bird's beak, the ram's head and the bear's snout shouted from the tree. Grandfather immediately began to tremble. He decided to run away, but still took the bowler hat with him.

Gogol’s “Enchanted Place” brings us to an intriguing point. The summary is gaining momentum.

Option 2

Since “The Enchanted Place” belongs to the cycle “Evenings on a farm near Dikanka”, in the narrative the author strives to preserve the unique Ukrainian flavor, which is skillfully “seasoned” with sparkling humor.

The plot is chronicle, closed. The action is almost over. It develops around one main character. One can note the naive spontaneity of the work, which is so characteristic of folk tales.

The writer introduces evil spirits into the creation, which, however, has little in common with mysticism. The images are quite vivid - it is clear that Gogol does not spare imagination in describing the characters, all their remarks are thought out to the smallest detail.

Quite often the author resorts to a folk style of speech, which is so characteristic of village residents. This makes the story alive and the stories realistic and sparkling.

However, Gogol seems to be abdicating responsibility for the veracity of the story - after all, it is not he himself who is narrating the story, but the deacon of the local church. It seems that the story was written “from the words” of an eyewitness. Nevertheless, the writer spent quite a lot of time giving the creation a “national character” - nevertheless, this is a journey into the world of fables and fantasies.

Bearing in mind that the action takes place in Ukraine, Gogol quite often uses Ukrainian words - given that the main text is written in Russian, it sometimes looks like the so-called “surzhik” (a mixture of Russian and Ukrainian), which is actually spoken by the majority Ukrainian villages.

This technique makes the characters' speech realistic and funny. As for stories, they cannot be taken seriously and with complete realism. Does not leave the feeling of actually listening to popular rumors and beliefs.

Trying to immerse the reader in an atmosphere of slyness, the writer quite often “swears” - this adds ease to the work.

The uniqueness of the creation lies in folk identity. Gogol describes the life of ordinary people without unnecessary sublime metaphors. The writer ridicules the thirst for quick enrichment - satanic forces serve as a kind of “revenge” that befell the main character for educational purposes, for his irrepressible self-interest.

We can say that this is a folk instructive tale - however, like most of the stories in the cycle.

There is an opinion that retellings of Ukrainian legends are memories from the author’s childhood. One way or another, this fact makes the work even more immediate and touching.

The machinations of the evil one

Everyone at home had lost their grandfather and had already sat down and had dinner. The mother went out to pour the slop into the yard, and then she saw the cauldron moving along the path on its own; out of fear, she threw all the hot slop on it. In fact, it was the grandfather who was walking with a cauldron, and all the slop in the form of skins of melons and watermelons hung on his head. The mother, of course, got it from him, but then the grandfather, having calmed down, told his grandchildren that soon they would be wearing new caftans. However, when he opened the cauldron, he found no gold there.

From that time on, the grandfather taught the children not to trust the devil, since he will always deceive, and that he does not have a penny of truth. Now every time he crossed places that seemed strange to him. And the grandfather fenced off that enchanted plot and no longer cultivated it, only throwing all kinds of garbage there. Then, when other people sowed watermelons and melons on it, nothing worthwhile grew there anymore. This is where Gogol's story “The Enchanted Place” ended.

Analysis of the work

“The Enchanted Place” is included in the collection of short stories and stories by N.V. Gogol “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”. According to the writer’s idea, the beekeeper Rudy Panko collected all these bright, sparkling stories and decided with them, as he says, “to stick his nose out of his backwoods into the big world.” The story “The Enchanted Place” was told to the spider by the sexton of one of the churches. This story happened to his own grandfather. At that time the narrator was only eleven years old.

The Chumaks came to visit Grandfather for Bashtan, and after telling stories they treated themselves to melons. Then the grandfather decided to encourage his grandchildren, Ostap and Foma, to dance, and he himself also started dancing. This is the plot of the work. During the dance, evil spirits take the old man to an unknown place, and it seems to him that he has found a treasure. The old man's experiences and his conflict with evil spirits are described. The action continues until the grandfather finds a cauldron with treasure. Evil spirits frighten the old man. This is the culmination of the work.

The denouement comes when the grandfather brings home the found cauldron. He thinks that there is a treasure in the vessel and calls his grandchildren to look at the gold. And there is “rubbish, squabbles... it’s a shame to say what it is.”

Plot features of the story: the plot is chronicle, closed, events are concentrated around one main character, the action is completely exhausted. The descriptions of nature correspond to the action taking place at the moment - whether it is raining, interfering with the search for the grandfather, or frightening the night landscape at the time when the old man decided to raise the cauldron with treasure.

“Enchanted Place” is unique in its folklore features - the use of folk legends. Gogol introduces evil spirits into the story, but it has nothing to do with mysticism. Folk fiction attracts us with its everyday side, its naive spontaneity. Gogol's images are full of bright life colors and sparkle with fervent folk humor.

“Enchanted Place”, analysis of the story by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol

Drafts of Gogol's story “The Enchanted Place” have not survived, so the exact date of its creation is unknown.
It was most likely written in 1830. The story “The Enchanted Place” was included in the second book of the collection “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka.” The works in this collection have a complex hierarchy of narrators. Firstly, to avoid accusations of inventing “fables”, and secondly, to emphasize the folk spirit of the story.

The motive is also traditional for folk stories .

The originality of the story is manifested in the bright and rich language, which is generously dotted with Ukrainian words: “Chumaks”, “kuren”, “bashtan”, “lads”... An extremely accurate depiction of folk life, as well as the writer’s sparkling humor create a special Gogolian atmosphere, full of poetic fantasy and deceit.

He scolds his grandchildren, calling them “dog children,” but it is clear that the old man doted on the tomboys. And they make fun of their grandfather in a friendly manner.

An important element of the story is the enchanted place itself. In our time it would be called an anomalous zone. Grandfather accidentally discovers a "bad spot" while dancing. As soon as the old man gets to his border “near the cucumber bed,” his legs stop dancing on their own.

In the cauldron, which was obtained with such difficulty in a cursed place, there were not jewelry, but “trash, squabbles, and it’s a shame to say what it is.”

Pushkin, Herzen, Belinsky and other contemporaries of Gogol enthusiastically accepted The Enchanted Place. And today, with a smile and great interest, readers are immersed in a wonderful world where wit, poetry and fantasy reign, and the very soul of the people comes to life.
