The story “Ionych” is dedicated to the popular theme of personality decay under the influence of the environment. However, unlike his predecessors, Chekhov looks at the problem of man's spiritual fall from a different angle. The author believes that it is not so much the environment as the person himself that is the cause of his degradation. Even a person driven to the very extreme should not lose his human dignity.

The story is structured in such a way that in each chapter the reader gradually observes the spiritual decomposition of the main character. At the beginning of the work, Dmitry Ionych appears as a young man full of strength, desire to live and work for the benefit of people. He is educated, well-mannered, erudite. The society into which he finds himself looks all the more contrasting. At first, the ostentatious education and unprofessionalism of the Turkin family did not even touch him. The love that flared up in him was the only hope for salvation. But Kotya, who did not want an empty and useless life in this city, refused him. And he needed her so much. In the cemetery he wanted to scream, demand love. The date at the cemetery is symbolic in the work. It seems to say that this relationship has no future. This is confirmed by the behavior of the characters. The very next day, during the matchmaking, Ionych thought about the dowry, and after the refusal, he somehow quickly consoled himself. Kitty also didn’t like and didn’t even respect Dmitry Ionych. She did not listen to his stories, she laughed at him. Katerina saw her sight too late. But then this refusal forever turned the hero’s life upside down.

We will no longer see Dmitry Ionych cheerful and inspired. His life turns into a piggy bank: money, houses, fat. His love, education and compassion for people are not needed by anyone in this city. So why then should he strive for something, to develop culturally, to grow spiritually. Counting the crumpled pieces of paper every evening became much more interesting and important for him. Thoughts about them warmed my soul. Startsev does not resist the environment, he yields to it

He is already glad that he did not marry Katerina. The hero despised the society around him so much that he hardly communicated with anyone. He simply could not talk about anything with these people.

But he accepts their way of life. The once promising, sensitive, competent doctor Startsev becomes Ionych. His life is now adrift, like the life of the entire city. The hero turned out to be weak before the power of vulgarity. He became part of the society he despised. I accepted their ideals and became an ordinary hoarder. He buys houses one after another, expensive strollers, saves money, plays cards. He now shouts and hits his patients with a stick. And he didn’t leave his position only because of greed.

It is difficult to say whether anything could have changed Ionych, taken him out of this existence. Maybe he never met the right person. Or maybe the internal core was missing.

In the last chapter, Chekhov speaks about Ionych in the present tense, as if stating that the fall has occurred. Ionych will never change, the light will not light up. He grew fat, flabby, and became a grumpy, unpleasant type. Nothing has changed in the Turkin family. The description of the stability of life of the “most educated family” at the end of the story seems to return the reader to the beginning of the work. There is a feeling of a vicious circle that cannot be broken.

Based on the above, we can conclude that the image of Ionych is a collective one. Chekhov rebelled against the fact that a person succumbs to the pressure of the social environment. The writer urged not to let yourself become small, to never lose your human dignity. The worst thing is to live your life uselessly. The writer calls on every person to take a closer look at his life.

Ionych - essay based on the work

Chekhov's story “Ionych” belongs to the mature period of the author’s work. Its main character, Dmitry Ionych Startsev, rightfully took an honorable place among the archetypal characters of Russian literature.

The main character is a zemstvo doctor by profession (like Anton Pavlovich himself). The first thought that comes to mind when analyzing this fact is that the story is autobiographical in nature, but this is absolutely not the case. Chekhov, being a doctor himself, knew well the characteristics of his colleagues, their thoughts and worldview, thus, there is no doubt that the psychological story was very accurate. In addition, the realism of the situations described is confirmed by numerous examples from life.

A young doctor Startsev arrives in a certain county town. There he quickly becomes friends with the local intellectual elite, the Turkin family. Dmitry Ionych is especially drawn to the family’s daughter, Ekaterina, who is interested in music. Absorbed by the feeling of falling in love, the doctor takes part in the Turka family’s evenings, listens to his beloved play music, and listens to her mother’s own works being read. In a word, he enjoys this society.

After some time, Dmitry Ionych decided to confess his love to Catherine. But the girl did not share the doctor’s impulse, declaring that at the moment she not only did not love her friend, but, in principle, it was not part of her plans to fall in love with anyone. After such an explanation, Dmitry Ionych practically forgot the way to his friends. From now on, his whole life focused on himself. He lived alone, stopped taking care of himself, did not communicate with anyone voluntarily, but at the same time his well-being grew every year, the doctor had an extensive practice.

Along with his love for Catherine, the doctor’s benevolent attitude towards both her and her family also disappeared; all their aesthetic practices no longer aroused in him any feelings other than disgust. The attitude towards other ordinary people was even worse. Those around him noticed changes in the image of the doctor; their attitude towards him was twofold: on the one hand, he was undoubtedly valued as a specialist, on the other hand, they did not like him as a person, even addressing him was not entirely appropriate for the title of doctor - just by his patronymic, Ionych.

The main idea of the work is that having failed (in this case, in love), it is necessary to continue to control yourself, not to take out your anger on others, since in the end there is a very high probability of becoming an “ionych”, losing your own human face .

Essay based on the work of Ionych Chekhov

The story interestingly shows how the characters’ attitude to everything changes. The characters themselves also change, but not for the better.

Startsev is young, full of optimism and strength. He is fascinated by this talented family. They love to greet and entertain guests. The daughter plays the piano, the mother reads her novel... Everyone does something creatively. The conversations alone are worth it! A few years later, Ionych is visiting them again and notices how ridiculous and boring the novel the woman is reading is, how empty and stupid the conversations are, how unpleasant and even mannered Kotik plays the piano. Here it cannot be said that Ionych is better than Startsev... He has gained weight, become rude, greedy - he is buying up real estate, doing it very rudely and unceremoniously. As a doctor, he also became more of a cynic than he was. Here Kitty, whom he loved so much, “helped” him. She laughed at him - what was this date worth at the cemetery, where Startsev was waiting for her anyway. Kitty openly tells him that she is not going to become a wife, she has big plans for life - she will leave, become famous... It could have been, but it turned out differently, in any case, she did not need to laugh at the person.

But Kotik, having tested her strength in the capital - in her studies, looked at Ionych in a new way. She believes that he is fulfilling a great mission - helping patients, working hard. She didn’t notice this a few years ago! And she invites him herself, she actually waits for him. But he no longer wants to see them, to go to them. He was disappointed in them, in life... Did Kotik have any affairs in the city? May be. But her personal life, in the end, did not work out. Now she is ready to remember the fan she laughed at. But now he laughs at her too.

Now Kitty looks at himself differently. One can hear disappointment when she says that she did not turn out to be a great pianist. I had to study and work a lot, but I didn’t achieve my goals. She continues to play at her parents’ house for four hours a day. Out of habit? Don't want to lose practice? Or does he still enjoy it? I would like to believe that at least this makes her happy.

Her parents did not teach her not to spit in the well, as popular wisdom says. And this is not even for the sake of profit, but they simply don’t do it. Why offend a person who, especially, shows kind feelings towards you? Show your pride that you are better - the chosen one? If so, then be with “ordinary” people. I think this is how she had to pay for her ridicule.

Option 4

For me, this work is more about how people’s common desire to be together did not coincide in time. That is, I know, of course, what is there about how Ionych turned into an everyman, that he was not interested in anything except real estate, he became fat and greedy. But for me, this is a work about love, some kind of failed one.

It’s strange for me to read about how he proposes to Kitty and she refuses. He asks her for a date, and she makes an appointment at the cemetery at night - she laughs at him, although he has overcome his fear. The girl strove to go to the city, to a new life, to study. It is clear that she is very young, even mischievous and self-confident. But later, when she became disillusioned with her creative career, Ekaterina Ivanovna extols the fat “groom”, invites him to visit, and it is clear that now she would not refuse to become his wife... He seems to her a great man - a real one who serves people (his patients). She didn’t see this before, but she saw herself in the role of a great pianist! And he doesn’t need her anymore! He has other concerns. He was also generally disappointed in their “talented” family. And I think that her refusal, that mockery did not go unnoticed. Now, if their aspirations coincided in time, then a good family could have turned out. Ionych would not have become fat and narrow-minded, and she would not have become disappointed and angry.

On the other hand, Ekaterina Ivanovna tried her hand. She needed to look at herself more critically... At least she could do without her pride, then she wouldn’t mock Startsev. Or he needed to be patient to wait for her from the City when she hit her bumps. But it turns out that this means wishing her failure. And in general, to not have pride, so that after such an attitude you still want to communicate with her... It’s difficult. But this is probably not fate, as they say. Both were young and proud.

I think that everything in the story is the consequence of this failed love. And everyone just needs to be softer, not refuse so rudely, not forget so abruptly... It’s easy to say, I myself don’t understand what I would do. That is, I understand them, I see that they did not act quite correctly, but could I have done it differently? Is not a fact.

The main thing is that this is an instructive and touching story.

Pushkin traditions in the works of A. P. Chekhov

The question of A. P. Chekhov’s attitude to Pushkin’s work, about the poet’s influence on the artistic system, is of interest to many researchers, including A. S. Dolinin, S. M. Bondi, B. V. Tomashevsky, B. S. Meilakh. The writer often spoke about Pushkin and his works, but this had almost nothing to do with his own creative activity. In addition, almost everything that concerns Pushkin is known only from Chekhov’s letters, but even in them he does not always speak seriously and directly.

Note 1

Perhaps the most unconditional and “direct” assessment of the poet A.P. Chekhov expressed in a dialogue with his son L.A. Avilova. When the boy asked whether Chekhov loved Pushkin, the writer replied: “Yes, I really love Pushkin’s poems.”

Chekhov was close to the peculiar poetic mood of Pushkin’s speech and the power of his words. therefore, the poetry and lyricism of Chekhov’s prose are closely related to the poetry of A.S. Pushkin. Particularly interesting are the cases when Pushkin’s poetic motifs are heard directly in Chekhov’s works. L.N. Tolstoy, who played a big role in the creative consciousness of A.P. Chekhov, spoke of him like this: “Chekhov is Pushkin in prose.” This reveals to a large extent the significance of Pushkin’s poetic lessons for Chekhov’s work. Clarity, harmonious integrity, musicality of the poet's works and an absolute sense of rhythm were understood and used in their own way by Chekhov, a prose writer. Therefore, in the works of A.P. Chekhov's work clearly shows Pushkin's motifs and traditions.

A.S. Pushkin in his famous novel “Eugene Onegin” created an “original estate” plot,” which was organized by the opposition of the rural estate and St. Petersburg. The estate in Pushkin's novel is depicted in unity with pictures of peasant labor and Russian nature. As you know, in this plot the dominant plot situation is rejected love. This motif is clearly realized in the works of A.P. Chekhov, both in prose and drama.

Prosaic outcome

Chekhov's work knows how to touch the heartstrings, and here he did not miss the opportunity to do so. The ending of the story is a little heartbreaking because it all ended with a description of such colorless everyday life. The hero's fiery feelings suddenly spread to everyday concerns, where medical practice took up a considerable part. Not a trace remained of his former love, which is clearly seen from the indifferent reaction from the mention of that family and Katya’s girl in his company.

As arguments for the final essay “Ionych”, one cannot ignore and not analyze the last point. When reading a book, you always expect the best outcome, because you manage to become attached to the characters and sincerely worry about them. I really don’t want to meet the villainous truth that Chekhov cultivated in his works.

However, without it, you can get confused in your beliefs and live in a false world, where there is no place for useful lessons based on the example of real problems of human destinies. It is better to arm yourself with the mistakes of your unfortunate book heroes than to constantly satisfy your belief in the best and live in ignorance regarding the true patterns in the world and human relationships, especially in terms of love.
