What does the story “Numbers” teach?
The story teaches justice, kindness, and the ability to forgive. Teaches that the one who is angry is never right. Teaches you to control yourself and remain calm. Teaches you not to take your anger out on the small and weak. Teaches that adults are not always right.
Review of the story “Numbers”
I didn't like this story about a scary, ruthless uncle who suffered so much from his own inferiority complex that it was important for him to defeat a little boy. Adults should be wiser and kinder, and not look up to capricious children.
Read the summary, a brief retelling of the story “Numbers”
The boy was a big naughty boy. He often haunted the whole house with screaming and running around. But there was nothing more touching than when he pressed himself against his uncle's shoulder. But that day there was too strong a quarrel and the boy did not approach his uncle, but simply wished him good night. But the boy dreamed too much of one thing, and therefore overcame his pride, forgot his promise to hate his uncle forever, and approached him to ask him to show him the numbers.
That morning he woke up with the dream of having his own books and pencils, learning to read and write numbers. And so Zhenya immediately began pestering his uncle with requests to urgently buy him books. Uncle didn’t want to go into the city and he began to come up with various excuses. He said that today was a royal day, a holiday, and the shops were closed. Then the boy began to ask to at least show him the numbers, and his uncle, in order to get rid of the kid, promised to show him the numbers tomorrow. The boy became very agitated, began to run around and knock over chairs, and kept asking his uncle questions. He dreamed that tomorrow would come sooner.
And from an excess of emotions, Zhenya began to jump and scream loudly. The adults grimaced, but endured it until the uncle could not stand it and demanded that the farce stop. The boy shouted again, and his uncle jumped up, shook Zhenya and gave him a good spank.
The boy jumped out of the room and began screaming loudly, bursting into tears. The adults sat in the hall, pretending that nothing was happening. They all wanted to go and calm the boy down, but they sat there, showing character. And the boy screamed and screamed until he became exhausted.
Half an hour later, the uncle came to the boy, pretending to be looking for a cigarette case. A boy was on the floor playing with empty matchboxes. He looked at his uncle angrily and said that he would never love him and would never buy him anything. The uncle shrugged his shoulders, pretending that he didn’t care. Then his mother and grandmother came to the boy, persuading him to ask for forgiveness and threatening him with various troubles. But the boy showed character. Then the adults pretended to forget about him.
In the evening, the grandmother again began to persuade the boy. She insisted that her uncle was offended and would never buy or give him anything. And it won’t show the numbers. The boy's self-esteem was broken. The dream burned him and the boy did not have the strength to fight it. He was defeated.
The boy came to his uncle and began to ask him for forgiveness. The uncle was being capricious for the sake of appearance, but then he still began to show the boy the numbers. Zhenya wrote down the numbers in a notebook and was completely happy.

Plot
One morning Zhenya woke up with a new dream - to learn to read, write and draw. The boy passionately wanted to become the owner of a pencil case, colored pencils, picture books and a children's magazine. He began to beg his uncle to go to the store as soon as possible and buy everything he needed to learn how to write numbers. Uncle didn’t want to go into town for shopping at all, and he declared that today was a “royal” day for Zhenya. The boy began to beg his uncle to at least start learning numbers, but he firmly insisted: shopping and learning would only happen tomorrow. Zhenya was a little capricious, but then calmed down, resigned.
Zhenya's joy, mixed with impatience, resulted in pranks: he began jumping up, kicking the floor with force and screaming loudly at the same time. This prank made him feel euphoric, but extremely irritated the adults. After several comments from his mother and grandmother, which the boy did not seem to hear, his uncle lost patience. He pulled Zhenya by the hand, spanked her and pushed her out of the room.
From the sudden insult, Zhenya began to cry bitterly and began to beg his grandmother and mother to come to his aid. It was difficult for loving women to restrain themselves, but they tried to be calm: spoiling children in their family was not welcomed. The uncle also wanted to jump up, open the door and hug his crying nephew, but he felt responsible for his reasonable upbringing.
The uncle maintained his temper and entered the nursery only half an hour later, pretending that he had come in on business. Still sobbing, Zhenya played with empty matchboxes on the floor. The uncle was about to leave when the boy said that he would never love him again. Mom and grandmother came in and advised Zhenya to ask her uncle for forgiveness, but he flatly refused. Finally, his grandmother managed to break his pride by reminding him of the treasured numbers.
Zhenya asked his uncle for forgiveness, and they made peace. Sitting comfortably at the table, Zhenya, under the guidance of his uncle, began to write numbers, carefully drawing lines with a stub of a pencil - his dream came true.

Analysis of the story “Numbers” by I.A. Bunin.
Story Analysis
“Numbers” by I.A. Bunin
1) Features of the genre. Work by I.A.
Bunin's "Numbers" belongs to the short story genre. 2) Features of the narration in the story. The story is narrated in the first person, on behalf of the uncle, who describes the incident and gives a moral assessment of his action. Having punished the boy, the uncle feels that he is wrong, so he “half an hour after you quieted down, looked into the nursery. And how? I walked up to the doors, put on a serious face and opened them with an air as if I had some business to do.” An adult is faced with a moral choice: admit his guilt and make peace with the child. But pride and the desire to maintain character did not allow the uncle to immediately establish relations with his nephew. The little hero of the story turned out to be morally wiser; he humbled himself, timidly left the nursery and asked his uncle for forgiveness: “Uncle, forgive me. And give me at least a drop of that happiness, the thirst for which so sweetly torments me.” Many years have passed, but it is the uncle who remembers that long-ago incident with all the details, since at that moment he could not correctly assess the situation.
- From whom is the story told? (on behalf of uncle)
— How does the narrator characterize the time of childhood? (it’s time for “selfless, that passionate tenderness”)
— How, according to your uncle, is a child different from an adult? (The child is incapable of dissembling, quickly forgets the insult, and strives to immediately fulfill his dream.)
3) Features of the plot of the work. The plot of the story by I.A. Bunin's "Numbers" is based on a description of a quarrel between a boy and his uncle, which occurred due to the boy's desire to find out the numbers as quickly as possible and the uncle's reluctance to show them on that particular day. Both heroes were faced with a choice: the nephew had to wait until tomorrow, and the uncle had to not be guided by the wise rule: “it’s harmful, you shouldn’t spoil children.” The spontaneity of a child’s nature led to the fact that the boy “came up with an excellent game: jumping up, kicking the floor with all his might and at the same time screaming so loudly that our eardrums almost burst.”
4) Characteristics of the characters in the story.
— What was the boy’s cherished dream? (see numbers)
— What caused the quarrel between uncle and nephew? (The boy wanted to fulfill his wish as quickly as possible: to see the numbers, but his uncle decided to stay in character and show the numbers to his nephew the next day.)
— What was your uncle’s motivation when he decided not to show his nephew the numbers that day? (a wise rule: “it’s harmful, you shouldn’t spoil children”)
— How did the boy behave when he learned about his uncle’s decision not to show the numbers that day? (the nephew began to play pranks)
- Why did the uncle yell at his nephew, what made him angry? (the nephew impudently misspoke to his uncle)
- Who is to blame for the quarrel between the boy and his uncle? (both uncle and nephew) Explain your point of view
- Whose side did mom and grandma take? (uncle) 11why?
— How did the quarrel between the boy and his uncle end? (the boy humbled himself and asked his uncle for forgiveness)
—Has your uncle forgiven himself for this quarrel? Explain your point of view. (Uncle did not forgive himself, otherwise he would not remember the quarrel.)
5) Features of the author’s position in the story. The author tries to objectively assess the situation without blaming anyone. Everyone (both the boy and the uncle) is to blame for the quarrel in his own way, but an adult should be wiser and try to find a way out of this situation.
6) The meaning of the story's title. Story by I.A. Bunin is called “Numbers”, since numbers are the boy’s dream, the object over which there was a quarrel between his nephew and uncle.
