  • What is Choice

It seems to me that choice is a person’s ability to discard everything unnecessary and give preference to one thing. Every person should have a choice, or rather, the right to choose. Any citizen living in a state and society with others like himself has the right to choose the government, the language to speak, what clothes to wear, what music to listen to. We live in the twenty-first century, so each of us faces truly difficult choices. This all comes down to the sheer amount of material to choose from. To choose means to take one thing among many. If this “set” extends to an incredible thickness of boundaries, then the choice becomes more difficult. Nowadays there are a lot of professions, so modern teenagers take a long time to choose their path in life, what to do in life. This is the agony of choice. There is a lot of music - it is difficult to choose a favorite genre, extensive poetry - it is difficult to name a favorite verse.

There are areas where a person must make a choice again and again, and also those where a person must make a choice once and for all. You can make multiple choices in the store, buying products: broccoli, rolls, milk, cottage cheese, kefir. A person, depending on his mood, can make different choices for dinner, lunch, and breakfast. The same applies to clothes, movies, music and more.

But there are such choices that are made once and for all. This applies to choosing a significant other, friends and other such things. The elections that take place to elect a president are an integral part of the life of every person. Such elections must be fair and just. A person can make certain choices only after reaching a certain age. The choice of government for the country in which you live is made only upon reaching the age of eighteen. This event occurs at certain intervals, for example, four years, five years. These time periods are called presidential terms.

The above choices cannot be put on a par with the choice of clothes in a shopping center, because the quality of life of the entire people, the nation, depends on the former, and the mood of a person depends on the latter. The choice may differ from another depending on the degree of importance.

Choice is always difficult, responsible and important for every free person.

Essay about Choice

How many times in life does a person face a choice? You could say that every minute you have to make a choice. What our life will be like and what a person will become depends on our choice.

Some situations require thoughtful choices, even, one might say, decisions on the edge of life and death. And we make some decisions unconsciously, automatically. But in both cases, all options can change our lives at once.

Every situation with a choice shapes our character - will we go with the flow, or will we take the situation into our own hands and be a strong person.

Our choices are influenced by our environment, physical and emotional state, and many other factors. It is the presence of choice that makes us look back at the past and think what would have happened if I had acted completely differently in that situation. Sometimes the difficulty of choice is predetermined by a person’s profession. Indeed, in this case, not only his own life, but also the health and lives of other people depend on the decisions made. Such people inspire respect in me; not everyone has such a strong-willed character.

People at different ages make decisions differently. Children do not yet understand responsibility, therefore they are very subjective. Teenagers are prone to maximalist and quick decisions, but older people are already making wiser decisions based on their experience.

Sometimes we are faced with a false choice, because the situation is predetermined and they only create the appearance of a variable solution in front of us so as not to arouse suspicion, or because they think that they know what will be better.

For me, I try to make conscious choices. Weigh different points of view, if it concerns not only my life, and only then make decisions. I am responsible for every action I take, so I want me to have a strong character.

My coach says that success in sports depends on discipline, and that, in turn, depends on your everyday choices - whether you eat right, exercise regularly, and take care of your health. I believe that this can be attributed not only to sports, but to any area of life. Behind every victory lies a choice - will you achieve your goal, or will you simply go with the flow.

Arguments from literature

  1. L.N. Tolstoy "War and Peace". No person is immune from mistakes. A person is not always able to make the right choice. Literary heroes are no exception. They also make mistakes, not always choosing what will lead them to happiness and well-being, but these mistakes become important life lessons for them. Favorite heroes of L.N. Tolstoy’s epic novel “War and Peace” comprehends important truths and gains life experience. Natasha Rostova is one of the writer’s favorite characters. Fate also presented her with a choice more than once, but not every time this choice was correct. Young Natasha meets Prince Andrei Bolkonsky at her first ball, whom she captivated with her youth, beauty and energy and who, in turn, charmed her. Soon the young people realize that they love each other, and Prince Andrei proposes marriage to Natasha. But old Prince Bolkonsky is against his son’s marriage, so the wedding had to be postponed for a year. Prince Andrei went abroad, and Natasha, unable to bear the separation, became interested in Anatoly Kuragin. She had a choice: wait for the groom or betray him. Natasha chose the second. Only after some time did she, of course, realize that she had made a huge mistake, but it was too late to correct anything. The author does not justify the heroine, but makes it clear to the reader that her choice was dictated not only by her youth and naivety, but also by her character. Natasha is a person full of life and energy, her soul thirsted for love, so the girl believed the false words of Anatoly Kuragin. Of course, the heroine made a mistake in her choice, but we must remember that with mistakes comes life experience and wisdom. And the bitter lesson that Natasha Rostova learned will be remembered for the rest of her life.
  2. L. N. Andreev “Theft was coming.” Often life confronts a person not just with a choice, but with a moral choice. In such a situation, the true spiritual qualities of a person are revealed. L.N. Andreev in his work pays great attention to the inner world of the hero, the struggle of light and shadow, good and evil in their soul. In the story “The Theft Was Coming,” the main character of the work appears before the readers - a man without a name or surname. Just a man. He is going “on a case”, about which the author says: “There was a major theft, and maybe murder.” The hero is a thief. He speaks hoarsely, angrily, menacingly. He has a large black beard, an old, wiry body and a hunched figure. And although the writer does not give a detailed description of the hero, does not characterize him, the reader imagines him as a man without honor and conscience, capable of theft and murder. But unexpectedly, on the way “to work,” he met a small defenseless puppy, thrown out into the bitter cold by his ruthless owners. From this meeting on a dark street began “the absurd struggle of a large and strong man with a freezing animal,” a painful choice: to continue the journey or save the animal. The man chased the puppy away, shouted at him, stamped his feet, but he sat helplessly in the snow and trembled. The hero left, but after taking hundreds of steps, he returned and found the puppy sitting in that very place. And again he shouted, threatened, frightened the puppy, but he did not seem to hear him, but only trembled. And the person going to kill could not abandon the defenseless animal. He picked it up and carried it carefully home, as if it were the greatest treasure. And it seemed to him that in all the dark windows the dark faces were laughing evilly, and the man was carrying his burden and making excuses that there was no other way. This difficult choice shows the spiritual qualities of the hero. If the bright side of his soul wins in such a callous murderer and rapist, it means that all is not lost for this person and there is a chance to improve.
  3. M.A. Bulgakov "The Master and Margarita". One of the many problems posed by M.A. Bulgakov in his immortal novel “The Master and Margarita” is a problem of choice. Each of the heroes of the work is faced with a dilemma: loyalty or betrayal, honor or dishonor, truth or lies, life or death. Some characters are stopped by this choice, as if at a crossroads, while others make it without thinking. For Pontius Pilate, for example, making a decision is not easy. He must decide the fate of the wandering philosopher Yeshua Ha-Nozri: acquit him or sentence him to death. Listening to him, the procurator of Judea becomes sympathetic to this kind, wise and truthful man and wants to save him, but on the other hand, it’s as if another Pontius Pilate is sitting inside him, who fears for his life, power, and career. These important components of the procurator’s life turn out to be more valuable to him than conscience, honor, and even the life of Yeshua. Cowardice and fear push the hegemon to make a decision not in favor of Yeshua, which means that the choice was not made in favor of conscience and justice. The wandering philosopher, on the contrary, chooses truth and truth. Even when stones are thrown at him and he is crucified, he does not renounce the truth. Standing in front of the procurator, Yeshua does not lie, but speaks the truth, since he is unable to refuse it even to save his life. With this he amazed Pontius Pilate, because no one had ever spoken to him like that. He was used to people trying to predict what he wanted to hear, but this tramp behaved completely differently: he spoke calmly and openly. Even while hanging on the cross, he continued to do good and mercy. Pontius Pilate is the hero of the Master's novel, who also has to choose between truth and lies. Inspired by freedom, the Master writes his novel about the procurator of Judea, a work that does not correspond to the ideology of the state and generally accepted literary standards, but the Master is not able to write lies to please the “powers of this world.” His fellow writers make a completely different choice. They shamelessly abandon the search for truth, truth, justice and write mediocre works that correspond to the policies and ideology of the state. Their choice is dictated by moral qualities: for MASSOLIT members, truth, conscience, honor are empty words. They are more attracted by the desire to live like a human being, that is, to relax in the village of writers near Moscow, to have the opportunity to visit “Griboyedov” and eat deliciously there, and receive vouchers to a sanatorium. Margarita also has to make her choice. Between love and duty, she, without hesitation, chooses a sincere and boundless feeling, giving up a cozy home, high status, and prosperity for the sake of the Master, with whom she learned the great power of love. For the sake of love, she agrees to the role of Satan's prom queen and plays this role to the end. So, M.A. Bulgakov puts many heroes before a choice. What to prefer - truth or falsehood, good or evil, love or duty - everyone decides for himself. Some are guided by conscience and honor, while others are guided by cowardice and irresponsibility. In order not to make mistakes, you need to have courage and courage, as well as life experience.

Reasoning

Does a person have a choice? The poorer a person is, both spiritually and materially, the more difficult it is to convince him of something. And vice versa, the more successful and wealthy a person is, the fewer words are required to convey information to him. But why is everything like this? Why do those who so desperately need a chance keep missing it? And those who seem to have everything grab every opportunity. Why do those who are always dissatisfied with everyone look no further than at their own feet? Why do those who are tired of living the same day never dare to change something in their lives? Being born into a working family, a person is likely to also be a worker, on the other hand, being born into a prosperous family, a person's mind will initially be set up for success. Is human choice determined only by previous experience or is a person still free?

How to make the right choice? Right or wrong will not be clear at first because it is not yet known. What is right is that a person wants to do it and does it. This is already correct. And accordingly, the more choice a person has, the more options he has to choose from, rather than just go with the flow. The more choice a person has, the more free, confident and happy he feels in life. It is important that a person does not think that there will or will not be a mistake, but still chooses. I chose and praised myself for any choice, because it gives additional motivation to develop, not to stand still and to be able to manage the situation at any moment in my life. For a person to trust his own feelings, emotions and passions. That is, the person caught fire, but still, it is important that at the moment of making a decision, making a choice, he also relies on reason. Because if a person comes to a compromise, or better yet, an agreement between his mind and his feelings, then at the time of making a decision the result will be pleasant and positive. And it is very important that when making a choice a person understands that it is his responsibility. No stranger said or forced him to do so, and he himself made such a decision, which subsequently may turn out to be either correct or incorrect. And you should never reproach yourself for what a person did or did not do. If it has already been done, then it was the best choice at that moment.

The current state of affairs is the result of man's own actions. There is a choice if a person uses it. If a person simply lives and does not think about his actions and thoughts, then it will be very difficult for this person to live while experiencing some new sensations.

Option 3

(441 words) Each person chooses his personal truth of life - the ideology that drives him and determines his attitude towards the world and people. This decision changes the character, behavior and other personality traits, because the perception of everything that happens around depends on it. This pattern is confirmed by many examples from the literature.

For clarity, consider an example from the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky "Crime and Punishment". Rodion Raskolnikov was a kind, sympathetic and selfless person who spared no effort and last resort to help people, even strangers. Once he saved two children from a fire, risking their lives. No less significant is his act when he gave the policeman almost his last money so that he could see off and save the deceived girl, who was already being hunted by a dishonest man. Who would have thought that this noble young man with lofty ideals would kill two women and take their money? This is how his theory changed Rodion, marking a change in his personal ideology. If earlier Raskolnikov saw his purpose in helping people, now he justified killing them. To gain power, you need to step over the laws of the majority and control it. Of course, the hero wanted to use this power to ennoble society, that is, to scale up his good deeds, using his influence. But the harmful theory embittered him and forced him to commit a sin that no good undertakings could atone for. Rodion was able to heal his soul and restore peace only when he changed his views on the world. This suggests that it is the choice of the truth of life and one’s path that most significantly influences the personality.

We can draw the same conclusion when reading M. Gorky’s play “At the Depths”. Each hero, living in a shelter and suffering from poverty, has his own truth of life, which greatly influenced their characters and destinies. Thus, the wanderer Luke is kind and sympathetic, because he believes that what people need most is compassion. He prefers sweet lies to bitter truth, because there is already so much bad in the world. Satin, a sharper and drunkard, on the contrary, believes that “truth is the God of a free man.” He denies the need to lie to people for the sake of their peace of mind, so he is always brutally frank with those around him. Even to himself, he says the most unpleasant things without hesitation: he considers himself a “finished man,” because after hard labor there is “no progress.” Bubnov despaired and lost faith in anything. He believes that all people on earth are superfluous, everyone will die, so there is no need to worry too much about such trifles as the standard of living. The actor, in his own words, “drank away his soul”, lost his name, so his character corresponds to these words: he is apathetic, weak-willed, weak. All these examples suggest that choosing one’s own ideology changes a person.

Thus, people are greatly influenced by the choice of the truth of life and the path that corresponds to it. They change when they decide which worldview suits them best. Personal ideology is reflected in the character, behavior and relationship of the individual with the environment.
