Such a bright picture. I like her very much. It’s like a picture from some fairy tale or legend. Or a still from a cartoon – big and good.
Blue river, scarlet sails (although this is from another fairy tale), green trees, bushes, grass... And many other flowers!
The blue sky is reflected in the river. It's summer heat... But nothing is scorched, and everything, on the contrary, is green. Ships are moving along the river. So old, beautiful... Rooks! Under bright sails. The red is even reflected in the water. There are seagulls flying here - a whole flock of them. Some kind of sea river, probably, because seagulls are seabirds. And the guests here are also overseas, which means they definitely came from overseas. And as I understand it, these are our ancestors. And they came to explore these lands and get acquainted. Both with people and with customs.
I see two Slavs looking at the shore. There's some kind of city there. Not very big... It's on a mountain, in the distance. With a fortress wall, but no castle, I don’t even see a church... Just some buildings, trees.
Guests look at it as if it’s something interesting. Attentively, with curiosity. They are dressed like warriors, wearing helmets. No weapons, but they may be hiding them. Just don't show it! On the boat itself, their shields are outside. I hope they don't wash away. And also that they will not rust. And the bow of the rook itself is either a dragon or a snake. Something so threatening. But right! Who knows how they will be received?
That is, they are definitely exploring new regions and can draw a map. The boat is sailing quite fast, the waves are drawn like this. They probably don't plan to stop near this town. Or suddenly they were already there! And now they are leaving - to continue looking for happiness! Maybe they have some kind of mission. Find gold... Allies! Conclude a contract for the sale of furs. You never know how many things people had to do in ancient times!
The places here are hilly and beautiful. Maybe the warriors are choosing a place for their base. I hope they have already signed a friendship contract. And now they can bring their children and wives here on vacation. And once they are prepared, they will also invite locals.
There are a lot of ships here - the tail of this column is lost. How many people are on one ship? There is a white cloth stretched there... Ten more people can dine and relax under it. And even more!
Good picture. It seems that she is even moving... But I have a rich imagination!

Nicholas Konstantinovich Roerich created a considerable number of works on historical topics. It must be assumed that he studied this issue and presented the audience with the results of his own searches. In the painting Overseas Guests we see the Varangians who sailed to Rus' to become rulers here.
I liked the artistic component of the picture, there are a lot of bright colors and the images are incredibly colorful, there is a lot of contrast that highlights the various details. The elements of the picture themselves also look great. For example, the reflection of a ship in water looks ideal, but it is quite difficult to depict such water ripples, to accurately convey individual parts of the reflection in the water, because they blur there and in addition you also need to convey the movement of the ship.
I admire the skills of this artist. How did he manage to draw a lot and accurately there? The whole picture seems to float towards the viewer - also an amazing detail.
There are two ships in the center, they are located in a kind of water hollow, and behind them they seem to be pushed by a wave. It’s as if the elements themselves are leading these people, as if they were destined to end up in Rus'. Rus' itself is expressed through small villages that can be seen on the hills, and near these villages there are steppes and fields, so beautiful and saturated with various herbs and other plants.
The Varangian ships are the main characters, they are depicted as massive boats loaded to the brim and with a full crew. On board there are powerful knights who look sternly around and survey the earth. The front of the ship is crowned with an image of a dragon, I think the Viking ships were called drakars or something similar.
There are shields nailed along the perimeter, which are probably war trophies. In a similar way, warriors celebrate battles won and tell others about their own merit. This procession looks simply magnificent, but I still continue to be tormented by the question, why did the rulers come from other countries?
Description of the painting Overseas guests
The central place in the picture is occupied by a string of ships. Two large boats filled with people are depicted in the foreground. The remaining ships are visible in the distance in small spots. The dark blue water opens up in soft waves before the ships gliding along its surface. The bow of the first boat is decorated with a dragon's head; it is skillfully carved from wood. The ships themselves are also decorated with carvings, and their bottoms are painted green.
At first glance, the sails attract attention. They are bright, made of yellow and orange stripes, and swell importantly under the strong breath of a tailwind. Rich, joyful colors are also repeated on the shields decorating the sides of the boat. Both the sails and shields are reflected in the water with yellow and orange spots, mixing with each other, which gives the impression that paint has been spilled over it. Shields and helmets on the heads of overseas guests indicate that they are ready for any danger. But weapons are nowhere to be seen, which means they came in peace.
A flock of curious seagulls circles in front of the ships. Their white plumage with small black dots on the tips of their wings and heads contrasts strongly with the dark expanses of water. White color is present both on the sails and on the clouds floating across the blue sky, the edge of which is visible in the background of the canvas.
Serious bearded travelers talk to each other and peer into the unfamiliar hills depicted in the far right corner of the picture. The hills are covered with green grass, but there are no trees anywhere to be seen. On the farthest hill there is a settlement with scattered wooden buildings. It looks peaceful and calm.
The artist used many different colors. From the pale green of the hills and the blue of the water to the fiery rich colors of the sails, the picture is lively, joyful and peaceful.
Description of the painting for 4th grade
The painting “Overseas Guests” by Nicholas Roerich was painted by him in Paris in 1901 after visiting the lands of Veliky Novgorod. This painting dates back to the initial period of his work, when he wrote on themes of Slavic-Russian history. It is part of the series of paintings “The Beginning of Rus'. Slavs".
The painting was made in Roerich’s special author’s technique, it consists of decorativeness, color and compositional features. The canvas is replete with elements from the paintings of folk craftsmen and icon painters. The artist combines simplicity, clarity of small details and monumentality on one canvas.
The painting depicts the most important trade route connecting Rus' with the northern lands. The central place in the composition is occupied by the leading ship of the Varangians. It is very large, colorful, bright and worked out to the smallest detail. On its nose is carved a dragon's head - a typical symbol of Viking ships; and on the sides there are multi-colored shields nailed, and paintings can be seen. Its middle part is covered with a white cape with red patterns. Inside the knorr - that’s what the Norwegian trading ships were called - there are knights in chain mail and helmets sailing. A striped, triangular-shaped sail is pulled tightly by the wind above their heads.
Behind the front knorr floats a similar one, just as colorful and bright, with a large number of people on board.
In the background, in the upper right corner, the artist painted a part of the land with three very lumpy hills and a small plain. On the largest of them stands an ancient wooden city with fortifications around it.
The viewer is also amazed by the water, which occupies a huge area. It is a very rich dark blue color, making it seem like the sea is very deep. It is so clean and transparent that viewers can even see the underwater rocks near the shore. Nikolai Konstantinovich masterfully depicts the ripples that cover the entire water surface. Roerich also depicts their reflection in front of the courts; it matches everything else, it is very bright and abounds in open color.
Looking at the picture, you immediately notice snow-white seagulls with black paint on the edges of their wings. They pleasantly complement the picture and seem to expand it. The birds quickly overtake the knorrs.
The work of N.K. Roerich simply fascinates with its color, brightness and cheerfulness. It's simply fantastic. Looking at him, the mood immediately rises, and Russian epics and fairy tales come to mind.

It is followed by exactly the same colorful boat, decorated with a scarlet sail. They move rapidly among the sea waves under the influence of the wind. This can be seen from the stretched sails. At the stern and bow there were people dressed in military uniforms of those times: chain mail and helmets. These are Varangians who make sea voyages. They are transporting some goods by sea. The picture does not show what exactly they are transporting, since the goods are covered with thick panels that protect the valuable cargo from rain and sea spray.
The front of both boats is decorated with dragons carved from wood, painted green and red. Oars are attached to the masts, which travelers use to move when there is no wind, or when they need to land on the shore. On the sides are hung multi-colored shields, with the help of which warriors defend themselves from enemies. They are ready to fight at any moment. In the meantime, they talk peacefully with each other. The sailors are accompanied by a flock of white gulls, which can also be seen in the foreground.
And in the middle part and in the background of the canvas there is a hilly green seashore. In the distance, on the highest hill, you can discern the ancient city of Rus' with houses and defensive towers.
The artist depicts the sea as blue, turning into a dark blue in the background. It, along with the painted boats, stands out sharply against the blue sky. And the bright colors of the sails and boats are reflected very beautifully in the waves.
The canvas itself is colorful and very reminiscent of a scene from Russian fairy tales. But still, it tells us about how people lived and what they did during the times of Ancient Rus', what the cities and sea vessels of those times looked like.
