The main character of the work by V.G. Korolenko “The Blind Musician” is blind from birth. From infancy, he grew up in serene peace, feeling protected and loved. Of course, the inability to see everything that was happening around him, nature, his loved ones and just sunlight saddened him, but in return for the lack of vision, Petrus was very sensitive to the sounds of the world around him.
Meeting the Stavruchenkov family is probably the first shock in his life for the boy, his first encounter with the real world. He suddenly learns that besides his estate, there is a completely different world beyond its borders. At first he listened to these conversations with interest, but then he felt like a stranger here. This meeting made him think and brought even more suffering.
When Peter visited the monastery and met the blind bell ringers, it made such a strong impression on him that he radically changed his attitude towards life. The bell ringer Roman went blind when he was 7 years old, he was very good-natured and sweet, but Yegoriy was angry with the whole world, could not stand children, he reproached fate for treating him so unfairly. Peter felt that he was like Yegori and thought that everyone who was born blind was evil. He felt envious of the blind beggars on the street, because they have no time to think about their grief, they need to get food and shelter for themselves.
The meeting with the blind Uncle Maxim shook him to the core. The uncle invites his nephew to give up all the benefits of a well-fed and rich life and experience all the “joys” of the poor. As a result, Peter joins a company of blind musicians.
After wandering with the blind and making a pilgrimage to the miraculous icon, Peter’s anger goes away. He got rid of his illness, but not from blindness, but from spiritual embitterment towards the whole world. Anger suddenly gave way to other feelings: empathy, compassion and an irresistible desire to help other people.
Evelina played an important role in Peter’s life. She was a warm ray of hope for him, which helped him cope with his misfortune and find harmony with himself.
Peter coped with his mental discomfort, he came to his happiness, demolishing all the obstacles encountered along the way. He got rid of anger and selfishness. He understood well for himself that despite all the adversities, you must move forward, strive for your cherished goal, get rid of all the negativity from yourself, and then you will certainly see the “light at the end of the tunnel.”

For every young person at a certain time, the question arises about his future fate, about his attitude towards people and towards the world. The world around us is huge, there are many different roads in it, and a person’s future depends on the right choice of his life path. But what about someone who does not know this huge world - a blind person?
Korolenko places his hero, the born blind Peter, in very difficult conditions, endowing him with intelligence, talent as a musician and heightened sensitivity to all manifestations of life, which he will never be able to see. Since childhood, he knew only one world, calm and reliable, where he always felt like the center. He knew the warmth of the family and Evelina’s kind, friendly concern. The inability to see color, the appearance of objects, the beauty of the surrounding nature upset him, but he imagined this familiar world of the estate thanks to his sensitive perception of its sounds.
Everything changed after meeting the Stavruchenkov family: he learned about the existence of another world, a world outside the estate. At first he reacted to these disputes, to the stormy expression of the opinions and expectations of young people with enthusiastic amazement, but soon felt “that this living wave was rolling past him.” He's a stranger. The rules of life in the big world are unknown to him, and it is also unknown whether this world will want to accept a blind man. This meeting sharply aggravated his suffering and sowed doubts in his soul. After visiting the monastery and meeting the blind bell-ringers, he is haunted by the painful thought that isolation from people, anger and selfishness are the inevitable qualities of a person born blind. Peter feels the commonality of his fate with the fate of the embittered bell-ringer Yegor, who hates children. But a different attitude towards the world and people is also possible. There is a legend about the blind bandura player Yurka, who took part in the campaigns of Ataman Ignat Kary. “Peter learned this legend from Stavruchenko: meeting new people and the big world brought the young man not only suffering, but also the understanding that the choice of path belongs to the person himself.
Most of all, Uncle Maxim and his lessons helped Peter. After wandering with the blind and pilgrimage to the miraculous icon, the bitterness passes: Peter was indeed cured, but not from a physical illness, but from a mental illness. Anger is replaced by a feeling of compassion for people and a desire to help them. A blind man finds strength in music. Through music he can influence people, tell them the most important things about life that he himself had such a hard time understanding. This is the choice of a blind musician.

Dreams intoxicate her, but in that life there is no place for Peter. She understands Peter’s suffering and doubts - and performs a “quiet feat of love”: she is the first to speak about her feelings to Peter. The decision to start a family also comes from Evelina. It's her choice. For the sake of blind Peter, she immediately and forever closes the path so temptingly outlined by the students. And the writer was able to convince us that this was not a sacrifice, but a manifestation of sincere and very selfless love.

With the subtitle - “study” - the author obviously wanted to express the experimental nature of his work, associated not only with purely literary, but also with natural science and medical problems. “The main psychological motive of the sketch is an instinctive, organic attraction to light,” the author wrote in the preface to the sixth edition of his story.
He discussed in more detail in one of his letters: “I was often told and they still say now that a person can only yearn for what he has experienced. The one born blind has not known the light and cannot yearn for it. I derive this feeling from the pressure of an internal need that by chance does not find an application. The terminal apparatus is damaged - but the entire internal apparatus, which reacted to light in countless ancestors, remains and requires its share of light.”
Petya was born into a wealthy landowner family in the South-Western region. The mother, having established his blindness, tried to surround the baby with excessive care and began to pamper him, but her brother Maxim, who lost a leg in the war, demanded that his nephew not be shown “stupid care, which eliminates the need for effort from him.” And in the future, Uncle Maxim remained a strict and kind friend to Petya, not allowing him to feel his inferiority, ultimately instilling in him confidence in the possibility of spiritual insight, which happens in the final scene of the story: Petya, who has already experienced the happiness of family life, is the father of a sighted son Having become a pianist, he captivates a huge hall with his playing.
The story, rare in its power of optimism, providing a convincing example of unbroken fate, poetic and truthful in detail, has more than once caused purely professional disputes, reducing its content to the problem of the convincingness or unconvincingness of the description of the medical history. These include the speech of the blind professor of psychology AM Shcherbina (1916). Korolenko responded to criticism like this: “Shcherbina is a positivist to the core. He or fate did for him what my Maxim wanted to do. He broke the problem into a mass of details, successive stages, solved them one by one... and this closed the tantalizing secret of the unattainable luminous world from him. And he calmed down... in consciousness. And he assures that he is content and happy without the fullness of existence. Satisfied - yes. Happy - probably not."
