“The Selfless Hare” - a summary of the fairy tale by M.E. Saltykova-Shchedrin

Brief summary of the tale

One day a hare was hurrying to his hare bride, but, to his misfortune, he ran past the wolf’s den. The wolf shouted to him to stop, but he did not listen, but only ran faster. Then the wolf caught up with him and caught him. Because the bunny dared to disobey him, he sentenced him to be eaten. But since at the moment both the wolf and his wolf wife and their children were well-fed, and they had enough food for another five days, he ordered the hare to sit under a bush and wait for his turn. And then, maybe, the wolf will have mercy on him.

The hare obediently remained sitting under the bush and awaiting inevitable death. The wolves watched him from their lair and chuckled. The little bunny had simple thoughts and dreams : he had never loved life as much as he did now, and most of all he thought about his bride. Maybe she has already found someone else, or even fell into the clutches of a predator...

But soon another hare came running to him - his bride's brother. He said that the bride was dying after learning that her groom was in captivity. He began to persuade the prisoner to escape, but he only looked at the wolf’s den and answered: “I can’t, the wolf didn’t order it.” At this time, the predator came out of the den and caught them both. Both the groom and the poor hare's brother had to die.

But the she-wolf, having learned how much the hare wanted to see his bride, took pity on them. She said that if a hare loves a hare, it means they will have a lot of rabbits, and therefore more food for the wolf brethren. Therefore, the wolves decided to let him go to say goodbye to his bride, but only to have him come running back at six o’clock in the morning two days later. The bride's brother was left with the wolves as an amanat.

The hare ran with all his might to the bride: he had to have time to cover a long distance, get ready, get married, and run back to the wolf. He was going to keep his word to the wolf at all costs and return, even at the cost of his life. Finally, he came running. His bride was so glad that she recovered instantly. They had a wedding, but the hare told everything to his hare relatives, and everyone decided that he really needed to return, because hares never waste words.

The way back was even more difficult, because unexpected obstacles arose along the way. But the hare was in a hurry, thinking only about helping out his friend - the bride's brother. However, when he finally got there, barely in time, the wolf again put them both under a bush and mockingly said that maybe someday he would have mercy on them.

Brief summary of the fairy tale “The Selfless Hare” (M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin)

The many-wise Litrekon has repeatedly been convinced that satire about Russia is always relevant. That is why he enjoyed reading the work of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin “Selfless Hare”. A brief retelling of the tale cannot be compared with the original in terms of power of expression, but it will help to get at least a superficial idea of the author’s prose. “The Selfless Hare” in abbreviation is the main events from the text with quotes that form the plot. For a quick introduction to the book, this material is quite suitable. Happy enlightenment!

(395 words) The wolf called out to the hare running past, but he did not stop. Then the wolf caught him himself and sentenced him to be torn to pieces. But while the wolf and his family were well-fed, and they had supplies for 5 days, the gray predator decided this: let the hare stand under the bush all this time and wait for his final verdict. Perhaps he will have mercy on him, or maybe he will eat him.

The hare humbly awaits his death and is afraid. The wolf cubs caress him, but he is not himself. The hare thinks about his bride, to whom he was in such a hurry. He wanted to get married and start a household, so now he loved life very much, knowing what he was missing. He even had a dream that the wolf appointed him as an auditor, and he went to his hare while the hare went on business. But he was awakened by the bride's brother. It turns out that the hare is pining away from melancholy and wants to see her groom. This news hurt him. He realized that he was sentenced innocently (“He lived openly, he did not start revolutions”), and he was not alone. The bride's brother suggests that he run away. But the hare looked at the wolf’s den and was afraid, because “the wolf did not order.” And the wolf heard everything and praised the captive for his nobility. He called out to his interlocutors, and they trembled, but the bride’s brother made a request: to let the groom and bride say goodbye. The she-wolf reasoned that love is good, because in this case there will be a lot of hares and more food for the wolves. And she told her husband to let the hare go goodbye. The wolf hesitated, but let go. True, the hare promised to come back to be devoured, and the bride’s brother remained hostage. Then the groom decided to go to the bathhouse in two days, get married, and then come to the wolf.

He arrived to the bride and told what was what. He didn’t want to go back, but his word couldn’t be broken. All relatives agreed with him. The young people got married, and the next morning the hare ran away, ordering his wife to raise the children strictly, to be faithful and to send the children to the circus. He himself still hoped that the wolf would have mercy on him.

But the path turned out to be thorny. Many events happened in one day: cholera, war, flood - all this complicated the road and slowed down traffic. Now the hare might not make it in time. But he ran, tearing all his sides and choking on bloody foam. He couldn't let his friend down! And as soon as he reached the hillock, he saw that the wolf was about to eat the bride’s brother. The hare shouted that he was here, that there was no need to do this. The wolf appreciated the hare's accuracy and replied:

And here is my resolution for you: sit, for the time being, both under this bush, and later I will... ha ha... have mercy on you!

Plan for retelling

This is a fairly short work: the author managed to convey its essence in a few pages. But for convenience, it can be divided into parts, making a plan for retelling:

  1. Falling into the clutches of a predator.
  2. Heavy thoughts under a bush.
  3. The appearance of the bride's brother and talk of escape.
  4. The hare was released on leave.
  5. Long road to the bride.
  6. Wedding.
  7. Tough way back.
  8. A bleak ending and dashed hopes: both hares remain with the wolf.

Brief story

The main character, a hare, ran past the wolf's house. He was in a hurry to get to the wedding, and when the wolf asked him to stop, he began to run even more. Only for this act, the predator sentenced the weak forest animal to wait under a bush for its fate - until the wolf eats it. The bunny did not do anything to save himself; he sat obediently and waited for death . All this time, the wolf and she-wolf openly mocked his behavior.

Alarmed relatives were worried that the groom did not show up for the wedding and sent the bride's brother to look for him. He found a hare under a bush and began to talk about how the hare was suffering and waiting for him. The godfather began to persuade him to run away, but the cowardly refused because he was scared. They both fell into the clutches of a wolf. The she-wolf began to persuade her husband to let the scythe go to his bride for a few days so that they could have little hares, and leave the godfather hostage.

Satisfied and grateful to his tormentors, the hare ran as fast as he could to his bride to play the wedding. With all the persuasion of his relatives to stay, he does not agree. After all, he gave his word that he would return in the evening. Of course, he was sad and sad, but there was nothing that could be changed, he had to save his godfather.

I barely made it to the swamp with my scythe. He encountered all sorts of obstacles along the way, but he barely made it. The wolf even praised him for being able to keep his word and left both of them sitting under a bush to await pardon.

Main characters

The main characters of the work are hares and wolves. Their description and characteristics:

  1. A selfless hare is cowardly, indecisive, submissive, obedient, resigned to its fate instead of trying to fight. Cannot go against those who have power and authority. But at the same time, he is true to his word, sincerely loves his bride and selflessly rushes to the aid of his godfather, who, through his fault, was actually left hostage by a predator. To save his comrade, he is even ready to sacrifice his own life. Smart, careful, prudent.
  2. The wolf is insidious, cunning, arrogant, well-fed and happy with life, cruel and dangerous. Of his positive qualities, one can only highlight that he cares about his wolf wife and children. He understands perfectly well that the hares are afraid of him, therefore he fully feels his power over them and behaves accordingly with them, punishes and pronounces sentences for nothing. He does not deal with the victim immediately, but leaves her to wait for death for several days, enjoying her fear, playing with other people's lives. He does not hesitate to mock the bunnies, although at the end of the work he still admits that they can be trusted, and perhaps even develops some respect for them.
  3. The bride's brother is a hare who came running to the main character to tell him the sad news that his bride had fallen ill. He encouraged him to escape - this suggests that he is more courageous and decisive than the main character. I was forced to stay as an amanat while he ran to the wedding.
  4. The gray bunny is the main character's bride. She is kind, loves her fiancé very much, waits for him and even gets sick from sadness when she finds out that he has fallen into the clutches of a predator. Agrees to raise future bunnies alone.
  5. The she-wolf is the wife of the wolf. Just as cruel and dangerous as her husband, but she can do leniency. It was at her suggestion that the wolf decided to let the hare go to say goodbye to his bride. However, the she-wolf does not sympathize with the hare’s love, but thinks only about her own benefit, believing that the love of the hares will bring hares, and therefore even more food.

fairy tales

In the article you will find a brief summary of Saltykov-Shchedrin’s famous fairy tale “The Selfless Hare”. Can be used for a reader's diary.

Saltykov-Shchedrin's fairy tale “The Selfless Hare” begins with the fact that a hare running about its business does not notice the wolf and does not respond to its call to stop, but rushes on at double speed.

Then the angry wolf overtakes the fugitive in three leaps and sentences him to be eaten for disobedience.

But the procedure for tearing the hare to pieces is postponed for five days due to the presence of food supplies in the wolf's den. The hare was ordered to sit under a bush and await his fate. Through the wolf's laughter, the possibility of pardoning the scythe was also considered.

The hare sat obediently and was afraid to even move, and a sparkling wolf's eye was constantly watching him from the den. Only one thought was spinning in the hare’s head: how long would it take to give up his priceless life and dreams of marrying a young hare. But he even bought a samovar for a joint tea party with his bride.

A family of wolves walked around the clearing around the hare and clicked their teeth. The hare burst into tears because he fell into the clutches of the wolf and could not get to the date on time. He was afraid that the bride would consider herself deceived and fall in love with someone else.

At night, the bride’s brother made his way to the prisoner at the risk of his life. He said that his sister began to waste away from grief and wanted to say goodbye to her lover. He also encouraged the hare to run away.

At this delicate moment, the conspirators were caught by a wolf. He released the hare-groom to the bride on his word of honor, and left the second hare hostage. If the groom had not returned to the wolf's den two days later at exactly 6 o'clock in the morning, the bride's brother would have been torn to pieces.

During the time allotted by the wolf, a wedding was celebrated, after which the hare, true to his word, set off on his way back. He barely made it to the appointed hour, as many unforeseen obstacles arose on the way: the river overflowed, a military battle began, quarantine barriers appeared against the onset of cholera.

The wolf was very happy about the return of the hare, as he had already sunk his claws into the belly of the hostage hare. He praised the oblique one and laughingly promised mercy to the hares.

Main idea and idea

As the summary shows, wolves consider hares to be something like their slaves or subordinates, without considering them anything . Of course, they are also accustomed to such a life, so they subserviently before the predators, address them as “Your Honor,” and are very afraid of them. In the image of a hare, the author, using the techniques of irony and humor, describes the psychological portrait of the ordinary Russian people and ridicules their inherent qualities: cowardice, humility, illusory hopes of pardon, inability to resist, opportunism to a violent regime. All this has been taking root for years in the souls of people oppressed by class inequality.

The fact that such important socio-political motives are touched upon in the fairy tale can be judged by the way the hare refuses the idea of escaping, saying: “The wolf did not order,” and by his fleeting dream, which he had while he was in a languid state. waiting under a bush: “He dreams that the wolf made him an official with special assignments, and while he is running around on audits, he goes to visit his hare.” It is precisely these petty officials who do not dare to contradict their higher ranks, obsequiously shake in front of them and show blind submission to manifestations of injustice and oppression.

Fearing to fight back the wolf, the hare sacrifices not only his life, but also the happiness of his bride and future children. He believes that if he curries favor with the wolf, he will have mercy on him and his godfather, but the predator cannot be trusted.

The main idea of the work is that one must always remember self-esteem and that a person must remain free and independent . By bending to the wishes of your superiors, you can lose your own face, betray your personal interests and get into trouble.

Sometimes people themselves drive themselves into difficult situations by their behavior. In 1883, the satire reflected in Saltykov-Shchedrin’s tale was especially popular, but it remains quite relevant to this day.

Another idea of the fairy tale is that you should always keep your word. If the bunny had stayed with his family and not returned to the wolf’s den, he would have acted meanly and dishonestly towards his godfather, who was left as an amanat. But he showed the high qualities of his soul, keeping his promise and even delighting the wolf with it. The predator himself, unlike him, does not even think of keeping his word: he only amuses himself and gives false hopes for pardon.
