Chapter 1

Here Gogol describes the nature of Ukraine and how traders go to the Sorochinsky fair. Our hero Solopiy Cherevik is heading there with his beautiful daughter named Paraska. That is why the hat is removed in front of their cart. But their whole appearance is spoiled by their wife Solopia Khavronya. She's such a grumpy woman, she keeps him under her thumb. They are going to the fair to sell wheat and an old mare. When they pass the river, they hear the shout of one of the boys, he really admires the beauty of his daughter. But he called his stepmother “a hundred-year-old witch.” She scolds him, and in response he throws a lump of dirt at her.

Gogol “Sorochinskaya Fair”, chapter 10 – summary

Cherevik and Khivrya spend the rest of the night in the godfather’s barn. The next morning, Khavronya wakes up her husband, hurrying him to take the mare to the Sorochinsky fair, which is already in full swing. Solopy wants to wash himself. Khivrya hands him the first rag he finds instead of a towel - and throws it away in horror: the rag turns out to be a red cuff of a scroll!

The frightened Cherevik somehow takes the mare out and goes with her to the fair, not expecting anything good from his trade. On the way, a tall gypsy stops him, asking what he is selling. “Can’t you see for yourself?” - Solopy answers, but, turning around, notices: there is no mare. In his hands he has one bridle, to which a red sleeve of a scroll is tied! In horror, Solopy rushes to run “faster than a young lad.”

Chapter 3

Then Solopiy heard a conversation between two men about wheat. They said that you shouldn’t expect good trade, since there is an evil spirit in the barn on the edge of the fair, and when people pass by it, they are even afraid to look, God forbid they ever see the red scroll. But he didn’t have time to listen to the end, as he was distracted by his daughter, who was already hugging the boy. Of course, at first he was eager to interrupt this, but when he recognized him as a friend’s son, he did not do this. Meanwhile, the boy invited him to the tavern. There Solopy saw him drain a mug of vodka, and he immediately developed respect for him. And when he drank himself, he proposed to the boy to marry Paraska.

Chapter 7

Solopy and Kum returned because a rumor about a red scroll spread through the fair. Several acquaintances asked to spend the night with Tsybula. They drink. And Cherevik asks his godfather to tell him about this very scroll. Well, one day the devil sat in the tavern and drank it all away, he left his scroll to the owner, but said that the year would come back. And the owner sold it to the master, and the gypsy stole it from the master, who also sold it. The devil has returned, but the scrolls are gone. The reseller who bought it stopped trading, then she slipped the scroll to the man. So his trade stopped. So he took and cut the scroll and scattered it around. Now the devil appears at the fair every year and looks for his scroll.

But then his story is interrupted, because a pig appeared at the window.

Summary of the story Sorochinskaya Fair by Gogol N.V.

Sorochinskaya fair

The pretty young girl Paraska, at the age of eighteen, goes for the first time with her father Solopy, Cherevik and stepmother Khavronya (Khivrey) to the fair in Sorochintsy. She is so good that all the girls she meets respectfully take off their hats to her gray-haired father. But the stepmother evokes ridicule - her red face is so angry and even wild. She responds to ridicule with sophisticated Ukrainian swearing - for which she receives a lump of dirt in her cap from a tanned young man in a white scroll. And his stepdaughter liked the guy so much... At the fair, he finds a girl and immediately starts talking about marriage. The father doesn’t mind, especially since his new son-in-law immediately takes him to treat himself under the “yatka”, where there is a whole flotilla of bottles. However, the girl’s stepmother makes a scandal for Solopia: with a guy like that who “covered” her face with manure, there will be no wedding! Gritsko is very sad. A roguish gypsy pesters him: if Gritsko gives him the oxen “for twenty,” the gypsy and his comrades will arrange a wedding for him with Paraska. The gypsy's idea is to take advantage of rumors that there is rampant evil spirits at the site of the fair. Everyone is scared of the “red scroll”! There is a legend that the devil, who was once kicked out of the inferno, became addicted to drinking and instead of payment, he pawned his red scroll to the shinkar. He promised to return for her in a year. But the scroll was made of such luxurious material that the shaver could not stand it and sold it. For the scroll, devils appeared in the form of pigs on stilts and flogged the shinkar with leather whips. And since then the scroll appears here and there - and brings misfortune to everyone. Even if you cut it into pieces, they will slide off. And again the scroll begins to harm. Now the sleeve of the scroll is missing - and the devil just can’t calm down. Khivrya hosts Popovich in the absence of her husband. He treats him, flirts - and suddenly: the sound of cart wheels - the husband has arrived. Popovich climbs into the attic in fear. The guests begin to help themselves, and a bottle of fusel is passed around in a circle. Someone present tells the story about the red scroll. Suddenly a pig's grunt is heard - and a terrible pig's face sticks out of the window. The guests jumped up, the priest fell from the attic... Everyone ran away shouting: “Damn! Crap!" The next day, Solopiy Cherevik took his old mare to sell, looked back - and instead of the mare, the sleeve from the “red scroll” was hanging on the straps. Moreover, he and his godfather were taken to jail for theft. Why did they run as fast as they could? Are you scared of the devil? An honest man will not run! It turns out that Solopy stole his own mare. Everything that is happening is a gypsy prank. Gritsko is a hero and frees Cherevik in exchange for a promise to marry Paraska to him. Gritsko and his fellow gypsies found a buyer for Cherevik’s old mare and wheat. Khivrya received the money and rushed off to buy new clothes for herself. While she was running for new clothes, they had already arranged a fun wedding with music and dancing. Khivrya, who returned, was unable to break through the crowd of celebrations. She failed to prevent her stepdaughter’s happiness... But the laughter and songs died away. “Isn’t it so that joy, a beautiful and fickle guest, flies away from us, and in vain does a lonely sound think to express joy? In his own echo he already hears sadness and desert and wildly listens to it. Isn’t it so that the playful friends of their stormy and free youth, one by one, one after another, get lost around the world and finally leave behind one of their old brothers? Bored left! And the heart becomes heavy and sad, and there is nothing to help it.”

Chapter 13

Paraska is alone at home, admiring herself in front of the mirror and remembering Gritsko. She puts on outfits one after another, dances and sings about love. Her answer comes into the hut and also starts dancing. And the godfather says that the groom has arrived and the wedding is beginning. Here Khavronya takes it, waves his arms, but is no longer able to interfere. A magnificent celebration begins. But the author notes that any feast and fun ends someday.

No matter how Khivrya resisted, truth and justice still prevailed. With the appearance of the devil, the author indicates the strength of society and throughout the entire work he ridicules them and their vices.

Korzh did not punish Petrus, he only advised him to stay away from their house.

Petrus finds out that Pidorka’s father wants to marry his daughter to a rich gentleman. The girl is in despair; it is easier for her to die than to marry someone she doesn’t love. Petrus went to pour out his grief in the tavern. There he met a strange man - Basavryuk, representing the forces of darkness.

Basavryuk volunteered to help the boy marry his beloved Pidorka. Petrus was supposed to pick a fern flower, which would help find the treasure. The fern blooms only once a year, on the night of Ivan Kupala, and is given only to clean hands. In the forest, the boy encountered the unexpected - evil spirits, a witch. Petrus was delirious. He learns that he cannot mine gold without human blood. The boy was ordered to commit murder. The unfortunate victim turned out to be Ivas, Pidorka’s young brother.

Basavryuk did not deceive - Petro received what he was promised. Having become rich, the guy married his beloved Pidorka, but this marriage did not bring happiness. Petrus only grew gloomy, and very soon his mind became clouded. Pidorka brought a healer to the house, but Petrus recognized her as the witch who was nearby at the time of Ivas’s murder. Missing certificate

Clerk Foma Grigorievich told the story of how his grandfather managed to cope with evil spirits. The events took place a long time ago, when my grandfather was still a young Cossack. The hetman ordered him to go to St. Petersburg and take the letter to the queen. Afraid of losing an important document on the road, the grandfather sewed the letter into his hat.

Walking around the fair, I met the grandfather of a Cossack. The Cossacks got into conversation and together decided to move on. The sun has set, it's time to spend the night. The grandfather noticed that the Cossack was not sleeping, as if he was afraid of something. He confirmed that he had sold his soul to the unclean, and that night his retribution awaited. The grandfather and another reveler who wandered towards them promised the Cossack that they would not sleep a wink that night. Despite the agreement, the travelers fell into a deep sleep. When they woke up, the grandfather did not find either a Zaporozhye Cossack, or horses, or a cap with a letter.

The Cossack fell into despair that he would not fulfill his obligation - the letter disappeared. He is rescued by a shaver who advises his grandfather to go into the forest to the sound of gypsy hammers forging iron. And indeed, the grandfather sees scary people in the forest, gathered around the fire.

The Cossack threw them a wallet full of money, and he found himself at the table. He is surrounded by witches and devils. One of the witches invited the Cossack to play cards, fool. The agreement was this: if the Cossack wins, then the letter will be given to him, but if he loses, he will remain in hell with evil spirits.

The Cossack lost to the witch twice, but on the third he realized that the cards needed to be crossed. Having crossed them, he won, receiving back his hat with a certificate. The grandfather asked for a horse to get out of their lair. The hellish horse soared up, carrying grandfather through the swamps and failures. The Cossack found himself on the roof of his own home. Entering the hut, he saw his wife, who was dancing in a sleepy state. He woke her up, but after these events, every year, once a year, the Cossack’s wife started dancing.

Part two

Christmas Eve

It was a snowy, clear, starry night before Christmas, so that people could joyfully carol on the holiday. Suddenly a witch appeared in the sky, flying out of the chimney. Where it flies, the stars disappear.

Another dark spot appeared in the sky - it turned out to be the devil. He grabbed the month from the sky and hid it in his pocket. With this trick the devil took revenge on the blacksmith Vakula. In the dark, the Cossack Chub will not leave the house, and then Vakula will not be able to come to Oksana, Chub’s daughter. And the devil was angry with the blacksmith because Vakula painted a picture, depicting the devil at the Last Judgment in a very obscene form.

While getting ready to go to the clerk for a merry party, Chub and godfather Panas suddenly saw that the street had become completely dark. After thinking a little, they nevertheless set off.

Left at home alone, Oksana dressed up in front of the mirror for the holiday, admiring herself. It was at this moment that the blacksmith appeared on the threshold. He can’t stop looking at Oksana and speaks tender words to her. The girl, seeing her power over him, just laughs and teases him. Vakula decided that Oksana did not love him.

At that moment they heard a knock on the door, and Vakula went to open it.

Having done their job, the witch and the devil went down through the pipe into one of the houses. The witch turned out to be Solokha, Vakula’s mother. She was very popular with men. The Cossacks of the village often visited her, but she liked the Cossack Chub most of all.

Going down the chimney, the devil suddenly saw Chub. He raised a strong snowstorm in order to return the Cossack back to the house. The devil did it. Chub and his godfather went home, not seeing anything in front of them. Knocking on his house, Chub saw Vakula. He decided that if the blacksmith was here, then his mother was home alone. And Chub went to visit Solokha.

Flying up the chimney and back, the devil dropped the month, which immediately shone joyfully in the sky. Young girls and boys ran out into the street to carol. Oksana saw beautiful new shoes on one of the girls, and she also wanted the same ones. Hearing about Oksana’s desire, Vakula said that he would bring the girl shoes of rare beauty. Capricious Oksana said that only those worn by the queen herself would suit her. If Vakula brings her some slippers, she will become the blacksmith’s wife.

Solokha hides the devil in a bag because there is a knock on the door - it’s the Head who has come. There is a knock on the door again, Solokha lets the clerk into the house, and hides the Head in a bag. But before she even had time to be nice to the clerk, Chub came to Solokha. After him came his son Vakula. The woman hid all her guests in bags, and Vakula took them out of the house, where he again met Oksana, laughing at him. Upset, Vakula takes the smallest bag and leaves.

The healer Patsyuk, to whom Vakula turned for help, hinted that he had the devil behind his back. The blacksmith grabbed the devil by the tail and demanded to take him to the queen herself.

In front of the residents of Dikanka, Chub and the clerk and the Head climb out of the bags. Chuba was amused by the cunning of the loving Solokha.

Vakula is already in St. Petersburg, the devil is in his pocket, and the blacksmith has joined the Cossacks going to the queen. While in front of the queen, the blacksmith began to ask her for slippers for his wife. The queen gladly fulfilled his request, and the devil and Vakula set off on their way back.

Meanwhile, in Dikanka there were alarming rumors about the blacksmith that he had hanged himself or drowned. Oksana was very worried, she loved the blacksmith. Arriving at Chub, the blacksmith received consent to marry. Oksana said that even without the slippers she agreed to become his wife.

After this incident, civilian service became unacceptable for him, and he joined an infantry regiment. Being a naturally timid young man, Shponka kept himself aloof - he set mousetraps, polished buttons until they shined.

One day he received news from his aunt, who sent him linen and told him about what had grown in the garden. The aunt wrote that she was no longer able to take care of the estate and asked Vanyusha to take care of the housework. Shponka resigned and went on the road.

Enchanted place

The father of the family often left for work, while his wife, children and grandfather remained at home. One day guests came to them, and the grandfather began to dance. Suddenly he stopped and froze near one place where he grew cucumbers.

After a while, the grandfather approached this place again and found himself in a field, next to a grave, over which a light floated. The grandfather decided that a treasure was hidden there. The next day he did not find this place.

One day, while working in the garden, he again came to a strange place, and immediately found himself next to the grave. The grandfather began to dig a hole to look for the treasure, but he was surrounded by evil spirits, not allowing him to take the treasure.
