One day she drank cream bought for her sick sister. He is rude to Katya and tries to do things his own way. Marina's sister is in love with Konstantin, they have mutual feelings, but he devotes a lot of time to the revolutionary. After painful thoughts, he decides to marry Viktor Nikolaevich, who has tender feelings for her, Kostya repeats his attempt to escape Kolya. The first was not successful, many comrades were arrested on the spot, it was clear that there was a “traitor” in the group! They suspected Mercury, who disappeared after being summoned to a secret meeting. Konstantin is afraid of problems, since a person has appeared in the city interested in the location of the Arsenyev family. When my father was around, they organized political meetings under the guise of “ballas”. The engineer is currently abroad, and his wife and son (Goga) are spending their summer holidays near Samara. Alina and Dina are not happy with their visit to this family. And Goga and Angela begin to become friends; they are both passionate about reading books.

Nikitich will take him to the other side of the river. There Oleg will take you to a quiet place. When this family was visiting, Kostya said that he wanted to rent a room from them to go fishing, but the Arsenyevs did not have room. Goga's mother allows her to rest with them.
Kostya promises to give Alina a task. He explains to the frightened sisters that their daughter will keep watch on the spot. Suspecting that they were wanted by a “traitor” - Mercury!
Fulfilling Revyakin’s order to help load the barge, the boy receives further blows. Dina does not leave her friend in trouble, the workers stand up for the children. The guy runs away.
Katya chooses Victor, the lover considers her a traitor.
Dissatisfied with the fact that Katya chose Victor, Marina gives Alina a note in which she asks to talk to her first. But the sisters get ahead of her and tell Victor that the marriage will be of convenience, he leaves. After the first groom has left, the young people are reconciled.
The young man has to work as a loader in the market. He is very hungry.
Dina decides to help her friend, she wandered around the territory of the dachas and sang songs with the organ grinder, who deceives her and gives her nothing. The girl’s absence is alarming; Goga shares that at the dachas they saw a girl singing songs similar to her. The mother believes her daughter, who denies everything. Lyonka sits under the fence of the dacha, and Dina shares with him about completing the task.
One of the evenings, guests come and have to read poetry. Sitting in his usual place, under the fence, Leonid sees the man everyone is looking for, and runs into the house and reports about Mercury. Kostya fails to catch this man. The sisters don’t understand why the boy came.

Summary
Part one
The first events in the story take place at the very beginning of the twentieth century. Alexander Dmitrievich Arsenyev is one of the revolutionaries fleeing persecution by the authorities abroad. He is not allowed to appear at home, since he has appeared in anti-government organizations and is in the status of a state criminal.
His family is in Samara, whom he has not seen for a long time: his wife Marina and three daughters. Marina’s sister Katya, their faithful cook and Alexander Dmitrievich’s old friend, Nikich, also live with them. All family members, with the exception of Katya, love grandfather Nikich as if they were their own. The old man one day admits to Marina that he wants to leave them so as not to be a burden. Marina forbids him to think about it and takes care of him.
Marina and Katya are active participants in the revolutionary movement. They have an older brother, Oleg, who replaced their parents at one time. All three lived an unhappy childhood with their stepmother. Having escaped from under her yoke, they always maintained a reverent love for each other.
Oleg is a forester on the count's estate. He makes good money because he is always inventing something and buying gifts for his beloved sisters. Marina and Ekaterina can always count on his support and hospitality, but his brother does not participate in their revolutionary affairs. And grandfather Nikich, despite his advanced age, is trying to provide all possible assistance in preparing the revolution.
The Arsenyevs' house is well known to the police, and even after their father's departure they often conduct searches. Only the last two years have left them almost undisturbed, and they can finally breathe easy.
Marina plays the piano, loves literature, works as a proofreader in an editorial office, and gives lectures on political literacy. A woman tries to convey her love for beauty to her daughters, wants to raise them to be intelligent and spiritually developed. She loves her husband, believes in his return and always tells her children about him. Alexander Dmitrievich himself also misses his family, writes heartfelt letters to them, but cannot come yet.
The Arsenyevs leave the city for the summer. Their dacha is located on the banks of the Volga. When their mother leaves for the city, the girls remain under the supervision of their aunt, who herself is just over twenty years old. The eldest of the Arsenyevs, Alina, is already twelve years old. She is an excellent student, serious and responsible beyond her years. The girl already understood what her parents were doing and really wanted to help them. But her mother protected her from unnecessary worries, since once she had already received a severe nervous shock because of the police who had organized a pogrom in their house. After this incident, Alina began to have headaches at the slightest stress.
The middle daughter is only ten years old. Her name was Angelica, but everyone was so used to calling this fragile white-haired girl with gray eyes Mouse that they rarely remembered her real name. Everyone loves the mouse, she is very kind and affectionate, but she is always pale and sickly. Her mother takes pity on her, tries to snatch the best piece for her, even if she has to infringe on the older girls to do this. The meek Mouse spends most of her time doing her favorite pastime - reading books.
The youngest daughter, eight-year-old Nadya, who is called Dinka, is the main character of the work. The events in the story are shown through her eyes. This is a very active and lively child; neither Marina nor her young aunt can cope with her energy. Dinka often becomes the cause of quarrels between the sisters, since Marina considers Katya to be too strict towards the girl. Dinka is the most disobedient and wayward of the sisters, but there is no malicious intent in her actions. The girl has a persistent and decisive character, which others mistake for stubbornness.
Dinka's favorite pastime is walking along the banks of the Volga. She spends a lot of time there, although sometimes she gets into unpleasant situations. Once local boys even broke her nose in a fight. Dinka is not afraid of anything. She quickly learned to swim and could always fend for herself. For her strength and agility, the guys call her Macaque. The girl doesn’t remember her father, and the last time he saw her was very young.
Somehow Dinka saved a snake from death, but at the same time almost drowned due to a strong wave. Twelve-year-old Lyonka helped her get out. At first the girl did not understand that she was in danger and blamed the boy for everything. It seemed to her that he was grabbing her by the hair to drag her under the water. The owner severely punished the boy. Later, when people on the shore were outraged by her ingratitude, Dinka realized her mistake; she was ashamed in front of her savior.
This is how she met Lyonka, who became her only protector and friend. The boy's father died a long time ago, his mother raised him alone. The woman hosted peasants passing by, and mother and son lived well. Everything changed when Gordey Revyakin appeared. He was a strange, gloomy guy who in a short time brought Lyonka’s mother to the grave. In the village they called him a wolf. After the death of his wife, he sold everything she had acquired and bought himself a barge. He treated the boy very badly and mocked him.
One day Lyonka met a young worker named Nikolai. He taught Lyonka to read and write and wanted to take the boy to his mother so that she could take care of him. Revyakin did not let his stepson go; he needed him as free labor. Soon Nikolai was arrested for revolutionary propaganda, and Lyonka was left without an intercessor.
Lenka and Dinka became friends. The boy shares his plans with Dinka, talks about his difficult life, shows the scars left from the beatings he suffered. He dreams of escaping from his monster stepfather, living somewhere in a cave until winter, and then joining the fishermen. Lenka even shows her friend a secret place on the cliff where he plans to hide for the first time after escaping.
Dinka invites him to meet her family. She is sure that his mother will definitely help him. But the boy refuses. He doesn't need pity, he wants to be independent, he wants to cope on his own. In addition, he fears that Dinka will not be allowed to communicate with him, their social status is too different. Dinka has to hide his friendship with Lyonka.
In Revyakin’s absence, the fishermen allowed Lyonka to go to the city to sell his catch, and one day the boy took his girlfriend with him. The girl quickly grasped the subtleties of this matter, and thanks to her skill, all the fish were quickly sold out.
Oleg’s friend, the owner of the plant Viktor Nikolaevich, is supposed to come to the Arsenyevs. He has been in love with Katya for a long time, but the girl’s heart is taken. Katya likes the young revolutionary Kostya, who reciprocates her feelings, but prefers fulfilling his civic duty to his personal life. Katya understands that there is no point in waiting for Kostya. A young man once said that he would marry only when the red flags of the revolution were flying everywhere. Katya believed that she should help her sister, who was raising three children. After much hesitation, she decided to marry Viktor Nikolaevich, for whom she had no feelings.
Meanwhile, Kostya is really busy: for the second time he is trying to organize the escape of the arrested Nikolai. They had wanted to rescue him before, but the plan was discovered and people suffered. For the fact that they were exposed, Kostya blames one man named Mercury, who pretended to be their accomplice. He no longer trusts him and thinks through his next escape plan especially carefully.
Their good friends the Krachkovskys live next to the Arsenyevs. The head of the family went abroad, he is a fairly famous engineer. His wife and son Goga came to the country mansion for the whole summer. In the old days, the Krachkovskys often visited the Arsenyevs. Alexander Dmitrievich, under the pretext of fashionable evenings, organized meetings of like-minded people. During these meetings, children from two families got to know each other better, but only Mouse became friends with Goga. They had a common interest: a passion for reading. Alina and Dinka did not like to communicate with Goga, whom they considered pompous and too self-confident. He boasted of his knowledge and considered the Arsenyev sisters ignorant and wild.
Kostya decided to take advantage of the friendly relations between the Krachkovskys and the Arsenyevs and hide Nikolai after the escape in their country house. Then he hoped to transport his comrade to the other side of the Volga, where Marina and Katya’s brother, Oleg, would take care of him. Kostya asked to be a guest with the Krachkovskys under the pretext of fishing. The owner of the house immediately agreed to provide him with housing, since her son Goga was also interested in fishing. Dinka is unhappy with this; she doesn’t want Kostya to live with people she doesn’t like. The girl even tries to dissuade Kostya from this step.
Alina wants to participate in the conspiracy of adults and be present at their conversations. Her mother sharply reprimands her for taking on too much. Kostya calms the girl down and promises to entrust her with an important task, but only next time. He explains to Marina that Alina must watch to see if Mercury, the same traitor from their secret society, appears nearby. Kostya sometimes stayed at the Arsenyevs’ apartment, and recently found out that someone came there with questions. Kostya suspected that it was Mercury. Dinka hears the entire conversation. Intrigued, she sets out to find out what is going on in their family.
Part two
Lyonka still runs away from her stepfather. This happens after another beating from Revyakin, during which Dinka tried to intercede for the boy. The man raised his hand against her, but other loaders stood up for the guys. The girl returns home and hears Kostya and Alina talking. She found out what order Kostya gave to Alina. The sister had to immediately inform one of the adults if a strange man with white eyes appeared near the house. Dinka also witnesses another scene. Kostya, having learned about Katya’s choice, accuses her of betrayal and leaves. Marina leaves a note to Viktor Nikolaevich, in which she asks him to talk to her before he talks to Katya.
Dinka shares what she heard with Mouse. The girls are the first to meet the arriving Viktor Nikolaevich. They tell him that Katya does not love him and wants to marry him for convenience. The upset groom leaves without even visiting the Arsenyevs. He does not appear again, and Katya and Kostya soon make up.
Lyonka begins to live independently. He earns his bread by working as a porter. The money received in this way is not always enough to buy food. At this time, Lyonka meets in the city with student Stepan, whom he met long before his escape. The boy finds out that his new friend is a revolutionary. He wants to help him distribute the proclamations, but he fails. Stepan brushes aside Lyonka’s advice and admits that there is a traitor in their ranks.
Dinka wants to help Lyonka in any way: she accompanies a wandering organ grinder. They collect good money thanks to her singing. But the organ grinder hides the proceeds from the girl. Dinka doesn’t tell people at home where she’s been disappearing for so long. When Goga says that the girl was seen accompanied by an organ grinder, Marina begins to deny it. She can't believe that her girl can do something like this.
Lyonka often comes to the Arsenyevs’ house. Dinka told him what order Kostya gave to Alina. One evening, guests come to the Arsenyevs. Alina came up with a task for everyone: each of those present must recite poetry. It turned out to be a literary evening. Lenka also listened, coming closer to the window. Suddenly he noticed a stranger, also listening to the voices. According to Dinka’s description, he recognized him as the same Mercury: he had light, almost transparent eyes. Lyonka immediately runs into the house and reports the presence of Mercury. Kostya rushes after him, but fails to catch him. Marina and Katya do not understand where this strange boy came from in their house.
A dressmaker lives next to the Arsenyevs; she has a little daughter, Maryashka. This blue-eyed little girl is a frequent guest of the Arsenyevs, who dote on her. One day, as a result of a fire, Maryashka received burns, the Arsenyevs help cure her. She especially worries about little Dink, and Lyonka supports her in everything. At this time, Marina and Katya see Lyonka again, but now they already show sympathy for him.
When Maryashka was cured, her mother took her away. The Arsenyevs did not have time to say goodbye to their favorite, and this became the first real grief for the vulnerable Dinka. The second blow for her was the separation from the good cook Lina. She decided to marry a Tatar who had been courting her for a long time. Dinka feels that the house is empty without Lina.
Meanwhile, Lyonka learns from the loaders who worked at the pier about her stepfather’s past and his death. It turns out that it was the criminal. He escaped from hard labor and, together with his accomplices, killed a man named Revyakin, and then stole his documents. In the end, the convicts found him and killed him. Now Lyonka understood why his stepfather was always afraid of something and had little contact with people. Noticing how thin Lyonka has become, the loaders offer the boy to go on board the ship as a cabin boy.
Lyonka sells fish in the city. On one of these days he notices Mercury. The boy warns Stepan, who is handing out proclamations, about the danger. Stepan manages to hand over the leaflets to Lyonka, but he is still arrested. Lyonka continues to distribute his leaflets, prudently hiding them in bagels. He wants the police to think that Stepan is innocent. Dinka helps Lyonka. The family is dissatisfied with her frequent absences, since after Lina left, part of her responsibilities fell on the girl.
One day, Marina unexpectedly starts talking to Dinka about Lyonka. She tells her daughter that she approves of their friendship and allows her to bring the boy to their home. She also reproaches Dinka for not helping her friend, who is in a difficult situation and is even starving. Lenka is grateful for the invitation, but does not accept it. This is not how he wants to appear before the Arsenyevs for the first time. The boy wanted to put on the cabin boy's uniform first.
The end of summer comes, summer residents return to the city. The Krachkovskys also left, leaving the keys to the house to their guest Kostya. The young man managed to arrange Nikolai’s escape and hid him for a while with the Krachkovskys. When he came to the Arsenyevs with this news, a white-eyed detective appeared there. Alina, who was diligently performing her duties, noticed Mercury and informed Kostya. A fight broke out, during which the young people ended up near the river. Then Lyonka saw them. Kostya took the pistol away from the detective, who began to back away, raising his hands. In this place lay a board that Lyonka threw over the cliff. He followed it to the cliff. When Mercury accidentally stepped on this crossbar, Lyonka turned it over, and he fell down.
At home, Kostya reports that Mercury will not bother them anymore, but does not give details. He decides to immediately transport Nikolai to a safe place; old Nikich with a boat is already waiting for them on the shore. When young people come to the river, they encounter Lyonka. Kostya, without talking, takes a random witness with him into the boat. On the way, Nikolai recognizes the boy and asks Kostya to take care of his little friend.
The next morning Lyonka tells Dink about everything she saw. She invites him to stay in their city apartment for the night, since it is already getting colder. The girl was able to get the keys to the apartment without any problems, because her mother and Alina had gone on a picnic. The children go to the apartment, but Kostya is already there, and gendarmes are scurrying around in the yard. Kostya needs to get rid of the weapon. He was able to give the revolver to Dinka, wrapping it in a doll. She gives it to Lyonka, who safely hides the weapon on the cliff. Dina came up with an excuse for Kostya to somehow explain his presence in someone else’s apartment, but the gendarmes still took Kostya away. When at home they were anxiously discussing the sudden disappearance of Mercury, Dinka let it slip that the detective had disappeared forever. Marina began to ask what the girl meant. But she did not reveal to her mother the secret entrusted to her.
On charges of orchestrating the escape and mysterious disappearance of a detective, Kostya was sentenced to exile in Siberia. Katya decides to go to him. At this time, Lyonka becomes a cabin boy and sails away for two weeks. The Arsenyevs still remain at the dacha, although the holidays are over and it’s time for the children to return to school. On the advice of friends, Marina wants to move to Ukraine and take Lyonka with her.
The Arsenyevs are waiting for Lyonka to return so they can leave. At this time, a friend of the father of the family unexpectedly comes to them. He informs them that they must urgently leave for Kyiv, and a surprise awaits them on the way. Dinka is very upset, because she and Lyonka may not see each other again. Dinky's mom left a note for the boy, explaining the situation to him. They will wait for Lyonka in the city, and from there they will all leave together.
When the ship returned, Lyonka went to the Arsenyevs, but before that he met the student Stepan. He was then released because they could not prove his involvement in distributing leaflets. On the way to Kyiv, Alexander Dmitrievich joined the Arsenyevs. He told his family that he had returned to the country and they could now see each other from time to time. This was the promised surprise.
Part three
Lyonka was warmly welcomed into her new family. Marina considered him her son, the boy also sincerely became attached to her, tried to help in everything, raised Dinka. Oleg became a real uncle to him, supporting him along with his own nieces. Lyonka has a good relationship with Mouse, with his new little sister. And only Alina did not really like the fact that her role as the eldest in the family was taken away from her. Now the brother was the head of the family.
In the new place, life gradually began to improve. Dinka really missed the Volga, but then she got used to it. Marina was glad that she returned to her hometown. She worked, the children studied at the local gymnasium. Lyonka could not immediately enter the gymnasium, so student Vasily studied with him at Marina’s request. The young man soon became close to his new acquaintances. He also had a difficult fate. When he was left an orphan, the people for whom his mother had previously worked took care of him. However, Vasily was burdened by his position and decided to provide for himself. All the adult Arsenyevs did not like his story. They decided that the young man showed ingratitude towards his benefactors and considered him arrogant. Vasily and Lyonka immediately became friends. The student also liked the small, kind Mouse. And he did not have such warm relations with the rest of the Arsenyev family; Dinka was especially wary of him.
At the gymnasium, Dinka becomes the ringleader and constantly invents some kind of entertainment. Everyone loves the way she parodies those around her. For this, the girl often gets punished by her mother, to whom the teachers complain all the time. One day, Dinka’s classmate, Mukha, invites her to pin the skirts of high school girls with pins so that they will tear them. Dinka does not agree to such a vile prank. But Mucha still accomplishes his plan. Dinka is also blamed for the incident. The girls' parents are called to the gymnasium. When Dinka realizes that Mukha’s father is a real beast who has already severely beaten his daughter once, she takes all the blame on herself. Her classmates try to stand up for her, but Dinka stands her ground.
Dinka’s studies were not going well at first. She even got a D in arithmetic. After that, the girl promised herself to study well. She began studying with Vasily and soon achieved good results. Lenya is also studying hard at this time. He makes up for lost time while working on his speech, which is heavily clogged with street slang and incorrect pronunciation.
Due to long hours of studying, Lyonka began to spend less time with Dinka, who suffered without communication with her friend. She met Andrey, and now Lenka began to be jealous of his friend.
A letter arrives from Katya. She reports that she and Kostya had a son, but the child became the cause of disagreement between the spouses. Kostya insists that Katya go to her sister, since that climate is more suitable for the baby. But Katya does not want to leave her husband alone, knowing that his health is severely compromised and that without her he will get even worse.
The Arsenyevs are buying a small farm in a quiet place near Kiev, where they could come on vacation. Dinka quickly finds friends here too: Fedorka and Dmitro. Meanwhile, Lyonka passes all exams brilliantly and enters the gymnasium. This is a truly happy day for the whole family, who was very worried about him. Lenya entered the 5th grade and was very proud of it. Suddenly, Alexander Dmitrievich arrives in the farmstead under the guise of a homeless old man. Dinka brings him to his mother, not suspecting that this “nobody’s” old man is her father.
Finally, after a long separation, the family is reunited. Marina and Alexander are happy, because they are now together and they have everything, and most importantly, they have a son, whom they have long dreamed of. The household surrounding the father do not disperse for a long time that night. With bated breath, Dink listens to how happily people will live after the victory of the revolution, which, according to Alexander Dmitrievich, is already close.
