For two years, the young officer Nikolai Almazov tried in vain to enter the Academy of the General Staff, and only on the third attempt did he realize his cherished dream. He already thought about giving up this idea, but his wife Vera always supported him, who helped him achieve his goal.
One day, coming home, upset Nikolai told Vera that he had made an unfortunate mistake. While working on an instrumental plan of the area, he accidentally made an ink on the finished work. In order not to redo the voluminous work, Almazov decided to draw a bush in place of the spot. A stern elderly professor, very familiar with the area, began to assert that there was no trace of any bush there. In turn, Nikolai, driven into a corner, began to prove the opposite. As a result, the professor decided to go to this place in the morning and make sure of the presence or absence of the ill-fated bush. Nikolai told all this to his wife. He was ready to cry - if the professor caught him in a lie, he could say goodbye to the academy and his future career.
Verochka, having heard the sad story, began to think about how to help her beloved husband. Since the young family was not rich, the girl collected all her jewelry and took them to the pawnshop, and then with her husband went to the gardener. With great difficulty, the couple managed to persuade him to sell them a lilac bush at night and plant it in the very place where Nikolai placed the ink.
To his great surprise, the professor saw a bush that had not been here until recently. He had no choice but to accept work from Almazov. The teacher decided that he was getting old and it was time for him to retire.
Happy Nikolai hurried home to share the good news with his wife. Verochka was very happy and said that from now on lilacs are her favorite flowers.

Alexander Kuprin's story “The Lilac Bush” tells the story of the power of love that can overcome any obstacles. Another proof that it is worth sharing a problem with a loved one, because it is much easier to overcome difficulties together.
The story begins with Nikolai Almazov returning home from a lecture. He was irritated and clearly dissatisfied with something. He had an important test planned - a drawing of the area. Nikolai’s wife, Vera, immediately guessed that Nikolai’s work was not accepted. Having tried to find out from her husband what had happened, the woman was met with a cry of despair from a man who had been humiliated. Almazov said that all the employees of his regiment had gathered in the hall, in front of whom a quarrel broke out between him and the professor, where Nikolai was not the winner.
The fact is that while working on the site plan all night, tired Almazov put a blot on the drawing. By trying to remove it, he only made things worse. Then Nikolai decided to turn the spot into several bushes, but the professor claimed that there were no bushes in that area.
Vera came up with the idea of planting bushes in that place, then the professor would not be able to accuse Kolya of providing false information. The husband and wife collected all the jewelry in the house and went to the pawnshop. Having received the money, they went to the gardener, who had already finished his work day. At first he offered to plant the bushes in the morning, but after Verochka’s explanations, he agreed to help.
All the time the lilacs were being planted, Vera monitored the workers and the process. When the woman was convinced that the plants looked as if they had always grown in this place, she went home.
The next day, out of impatience, Vera went out to meet her husband on the street. Seeing his joyful face, she realized that everything had gone well. Indeed, the professor came to the place with Nikolai, saw the bushes and apologized to Almazov. Verochka asked her husband for some more details of their conversation, and then they laughed together about this situation.
The meaning of the story is pure unselfish love. We see a husband and wife who are happily married. Vera sincerely worries about her husband and does not stand aside when he is unhappy. During his studies, she helped him prepare a number of assignments. She supported me after several failures in admission. Even now, when her husband was ready to cry from resentment, she did not lose heart. Vera began to think about how to solve the problem, did not despair, and came to the right conclusion. She decided to plant bushes to make her husband's plan believable.
The woman herself talked with the appraiser, the gardener, and the workers. I chose bushes that matched the painted blots on Almazov’s plan - it turned out to be lilac. I followed the work done until the very end to personally verify the reality of the landscape. I couldn’t find a place for myself because I was worried about my husband, and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief only when I realized that my husband was happy. She sincerely loves Almazov, so she is next to him both in sorrow and in joy.
In turn, Almazov is a person with a highly developed sense of pride. He could not bear the hurt honor when the professor caught him in a lie in front of his colleagues. Noting that the professor is a German and a pedant, he shows that it will not be possible to get out of the situation.
The author explains why Nikolai reacted so sharply to failure. He tried several times to enroll, but succeeded on the third attempt.
