- The theme of love in the story Garnet Bracelet
Kuprin in his works shows us true love, where there is not an ounce of self-interest, and which does not crave any reward. And love in the story “The Garnet Bracelet” is described as all-consuming, it is not just a hobby, but a great feeling for life.
In the story we see the true love of one poor official Zheltkov for the married Vera Shein, how happy he is to simply love, without demanding anything in return. And as we see, it didn’t matter to him at all that she didn’t need him. And as proof of his boundless love, he gives Vera Nikolaevna a garnet bracelet, the only valuable thing that he inherited from his mother.
Vera’s relatives, dissatisfied with the interference in their personal life, ask Zheltkov to leave her alone and not write letters, which she doesn’t care about anyway. But is it really possible to take away love?
The only joy and meaning in Zheltkov’s life was his love for Vera. He did not have any goals in life, he was no longer interested in anything.
As a result, he decides to commit suicide and fulfills Vera’s will by leaving her. Zheltkova’s love will remain unrequited...
She will realize late that it was true love, the one that many can only dream of, passed her by. Later, looking at the dead Zheltkov, Vera will compare him with the greatest people.
The story “The Garnet Bracelet” colorfully shows us all the torment and tender feelings that are contrasted with the lack of spirituality in this world, where a lover is ready to do anything for the sake of his beloved.
A person who has managed to love so reverently has some special concept of life. And even though Zheltkov was just an ordinary person, he turned out to be above all established norms and standards.
Kuprin portrays love as an unattainable mystery, but for such love there is no doubt. “The Garnet Bracelet” is a very interesting and at the same time sad work, in which Kuprin tried to teach us to appreciate something in life in a timely manner...
Thanks to his works, we find ourselves in a world where selfless and kind people appear before us. Love is passion, it is a powerful and real feeling that shows the best qualities of the soul. But besides all this, love is truthfulness and sincerity in relationships.
Option 2
Love - this word evokes completely different emotions. It can carry both a positive and negative attitude. Kuprin was a unique author who could combine several areas of love in his works. One of these stories was “The Garnet Bracelet.”
The author has always been sensitive to such a phenomenon as love, and in his story he exalted it, one might say, idolized it, which made his work so magical. The main character, the official Zheltkov, was madly in love with a lady named Vera, although he was able to open up to her entirely only at the end of his life’s journey. At first Vera did not know how to react, because she received letters with declarations of love, and her family laughed and mocked her. Only Vera’s grandfather suggested that the words written in the letters may not be empty, then the granddaughter will miss the love that all girls in the world dream of.
Love is shown as a bright, pure feeling, and the object of official Zheltkov’s adoration appears before us as an example of the female ideal. Our hero is ready to envy absolutely everything that surrounds and touches Vera. He envies the trees she could touch as she passed, the people she talked to along the way. Therefore, when the realization of the hopelessness of his love and life came to him, he decides to give the woman he loves a gift with which, although not on his own, he will be able to touch her. This bracelet was the most expensive item our poor hero had.
Love at a distance was very difficult for him, but he cherished it in his heart for a long time. In parting, before his death, he wrote her one last letter, in which he said that he was leaving this life at the behest of God, and that he was blessing her and wishing her further happiness. But one can understand that Vera, who realized her chance too late, will no longer be able to live calmly and happily; perhaps this was the only true and sincere love that was waiting for her in life, and she missed it.
In this story by Kuprin, love has a tragic connotation, because it remained an unopened flower in the lives of two people. At first she was unresponsive for a very long time, but when she began to sprout into the second heart, the first, already exhausted from waiting, stopped beating.
The work “Garnet Bracelet” can be perceived not only as an “ode” to love, but also as a prayer for love. Zheltkov in his letter used the expression “hallowed be thy name,” which is a reference to the scriptures of God. He deified his chosen one, which, unfortunately, still could not bring his life to a joyful end. But he did not suffer, he loved, and this feeling was a gift, because not everyone is given the opportunity to experience such a strong feeling at least once in their life, for which our hero remained grateful to his chosen one. She gave him, albeit unrequited, but true love!
Summary of the story “Garnet Bracelet” by A.I. Kuprina
From the first lines of the work, we learn about the main character Vera Nikolaevna, who with her family currently lives in the country, as their city house is undergoing renovations.
It’s September, and at the dacha preparations are in full swing for a festive dinner in honor of the hostess’s name day. In the morning, Vera Nikolaevna’s husband gave her earrings. She was glad that her holiday would be held at the dacha, since her husband’s financial affairs were not at their best. Her sister Anna came to help the woman with lunch. The guests slowly began to arrive. The weather outside was good. The evening passed with warm, heartfelt conversations. Later, the guests sat down to play poker. Suddenly the messenger brought a package. It had a gold bracelet with garnets and a small green stone in the middle. There was also a note attached to the gift. It stated that the bracelet is a family heirloom of the donor, and the green stone, which is placed in the middle, has the properties of a talisman.
The holiday was in full swing. The guests joked, sang, played cards and looked with interest at an album with satirical pictures and stories, which the owner himself had made. Among those stories was the story of a telegraph operator madly in love with Princess Vera. He pursued his lover despite her refusal. Unrequited love drove a man to a madhouse.
The guests began to leave, and those who remained were talking with General Anosov, an old friend of the father of the sisters Vera and Anna, about his war years and love adventures. Walking through the garden, the general told Vera about his unsuccessful marriage. Later the conversation turned to the topic of understanding love. Anosov told stories about men for whom love was higher than their lives. He also began to ask Vera Nikolaevna about the telegraph operator. As it turned out, the princess had never seen him, and in general did not know who he really was.
Returning from a walk, the main character found her husband and brother Nikolai having an unpleasant conversation. They decided that what was happening, namely the letters and gifts, discredited the name of the princess and her husband as well, so this story needed to be completed.
Knowing nothing about the princess’s admirer other than his initials G.S.Zh., Vasily Lvovich and Nikolai tracked him down. Vera's brother attacked him with threats, but Shein, on the contrary, showed generosity and listened to him. Zheltkov admitted that he was hopelessly in love with Vera Nikolaevna, but too much, so it was very difficult for him to overcome this feeling. In addition, he said that he would never bother the princess again, since he had spent all the government money and was already forced to leave.
In the evening, Vera told her husband about her worries that the man would soon commit suicide. A couple of days later, it became known from a newspaper article about the suicide of official Zheltkov. On the same day, the postman brought a letter for the hostess. It reported that Vera Nikolaevna was the only joy in his life, and after his death he asked to play a Beethoven sonata.
Then the woman decides to go to the city and find the apartment of that same admirer. When the princess saw him in the coffin, she realized that the deep feeling that Anosov described had passed her by.
Returning home, Vera Nikolaevna asks the pianist to play the sonata mentioned in the letter. As soon as the music started, tears flowed from her eyes.
Essay Love in the work of Kuprin Garnet bracelet
Over the many centuries of human existence, countless works have been written on the topic of love. And this is not without reason. After all, love occupies a huge place in the life of every person, giving it a special meaning. Among all these works, one can single out very few that describe as strong a feeling of love as Kuprin’s work “Garnet Bracelet”.
The main character, official Zheltkov, as he himself describes his feeling, has the happiness of experiencing real, boundless love. His feeling is so strong that in some places he can be mistaken for an unhealthy, mentally ill person. The peculiarity of Zheltkov’s feeling is that this person in no way wants to disturb the object of his boundless love and passion. He demands absolutely nothing in return for this superhuman love. It doesn’t even occur to him that he can cool down and calm his heart just by meeting Vera. This not only speaks of the iron willpower of a person, but also of the boundless love of this person. It is love that does not allow him, even for a moment, to be worthy of the attention of the object of love.
In the letter, Zheltkov calls his love a gift from God and expresses his gratitude to the Lord for the opportunity to experience such a feeling. Of course, both the reader and the other heroes of the work are well aware that Zheltkov’s love brought him nothing more than bitter suffering and torment. But only a person who has experienced all this and felt such a strong feeling of love has the right to judge or understand the hero. Zheltkov is unable to do anything with his love. He knows about the impossibility of his further coexistence with this feeling of love. That is why the best way out for him is suicide. Before this act, he assures everyone in a letter that he has lived a happy life.

Brief retelling of Garnet bracelet
One day Princess Vera Nikolaevna Sheina celebrated her name day. She celebrated at the dacha, since her and her husband’s apartment was being renovated. Many guests were invited to the celebration, and the birthday girl was a little embarrassed that there were thirteen guests.
The guests went to play poker, and Vera went to the veranda, where the maid gave her a mysterious package. In it, Vera found a box containing a gold bracelet and a note.
Vera first examined the bracelet. It was made of low-grade gold, but on some links there were poorly polished garnet stones suspended, and in the middle of it hung a small green stone, as it later turned out to be a rare type of garnet - green garnet. Then Vera read the note. It was written in beautiful handwriting, which was very familiar to the woman. The note contained congratulations on Angel's Day. The author wrote that this bracelet was passed down from generation to generation, and it has power, women with it gain the gift of foresight and are no longer bothered by bad thoughts, and men can avoid violent death. The author also asked for forgiveness for his insolence seven years ago.
Vera thought for a long time whether to show her husband a gift and a note to her husband Vasya or not. Are you enrolling in 2021? And I decided to show everything after the guests left.
The holiday is in full swing. Prince Vasily Lvovich showed the guests a family humorous album and read out letters that a loving telegraph operator wrote to Vera before her marriage. Then all the guests drank tea and began to leave. Vera went to see off the guests, and asked her husband to go look at the red case and the letter in the table.
While the woman was seeing off General Anosov, in response to words about the lack of love in the modern world and the uselessness of marriage, she said that she was very happily married and loved her husband. And the general said that love should be a tragedy. He tells a few examples and then asks about the telegraph operator. The woman says that a couple of years before her marriage, a stranger sent her letters, who signed the letters “G. S. Zh." He apparently kept an eye on Vera, as he described her entire day in letters. Soon Vera asked this man not to write to her, and from then on he limited himself to only congratulations on the holidays.
Vera's brother Nikolai and her husband Vasily Lvovich decide to find a secret admirer, because they do not want this to become known to anyone later. They find the person who sent the bracelet. He turned out to be a man named Zheltkov. He apologized to Vasily and explained that Vera had been his only true love for eight years. He promised not to write to her anymore, but asks to talk on the phone once. After this conversation, Zheltkov promised Vasily that no one would ever hear from him again, asked permission from the princess’s husband to give her the last letter, and received it.
Vasily Lvovich came home and told everything to his wife, who was amazed by this story. She understands that Zheltkov is going to kill himself. And in the morning Vera sees an article in the newspaper about the suicide of the control service official G.S. Zheltkova.
Vera receives the last letter from the deceased, in which he asks for forgiveness, talks about love and says that he first saw her at the circus, she was sitting in a box. It was then that Zheltkov fell in love.
Vera goes home to Zheltkov and learns from his housekeeper about the wonderful man Zheltkov. It turned out that before sending the garnet bracelet to Vera, Zheltkov hung it on the icon for several days. Vera understands that the love that every woman dreams of has passed her by. She kisses the deceased on the forehead and leaves.
Arriving home, the woman was glad that there was no one there except her. She thought a lot about Zheltkov and about this love. Then pianist Jenny Reiter came to visit and played a Beethoven sonnet. It was he who asked Zheltkov to play in the letter.
Vera was sad. She cried, because such love is a dream. Vera pressed herself against the acacia tree and hoped that Zheltkov had forgiven her.
