A detailed analysis of the work according to the plan that the Many-Wise Litrekon presents to your attention will help you understand all the thoughts and images collected in the poem.

History of creation

“Prayer” was written by M.Yu. Lermontov in 1839 .
Autumn and winter 1839-1840. Lermontov spent time in St. Petersburg. He was already popular and was often invited to evenings in secular salons.

At one of the evenings at the Karamzins’, he met Maria Alekseevna Shcherbatova. He really liked the young and beautiful widow, the poet also made a great impression on her. They talked often and for a long time.

A.O. Smirnova-Rosset recalled how, in her presence, Lermontov complained to Shcherbatova about the melancholy that overwhelmed him at times. In response, Maria Alekseevna asked if he prayed at such moments, to which Lermontov said that he had forgotten all the prayers. Shcherbatova immediately read “Theotokos” to him. The poet walked away, and towards the end of the evening he presented Maria Alekseevna with the poem “Prayer”.

This work quickly gained popularity, but was published after the death of the author. Belinsky called him one of the most significant in the poet’s creative baggage.

Analysis of the poem “In a difficult moment of life” by Lermontov (1 option)

Lermontov entered the poetic world, first of all, as a lone rebel. From his earliest works, he develops a romantic image of a poet confronting the crowd. The main aspirations of the lyrical hero are to achieve freedom and independence. At the same time, he is developing a demonic theme. Lermontov's ideal is a rebellious spirit, standing above human and divine laws. Naturally, such sentiments were very far from Christian humility and submission. Many considered the poet a freethinker and an atheist.

That is why the poem “In a difficult moment of life,” or “Prayer,” stands out sharply against the general background of Lermontov’s work. It was written in 1839, shortly after the poet returned from exile. Turning to a religious topic can be explained by a painful search for a way out of a difficult situation. Pushkin's defense in the poem "The Death of a Poet" caused the Tsar's disgrace and closed the doors to many houses of high society for Lermontov. They began to treat him with suspicion and distrust. While still a young man, the poet bitterly admits that he does not find a response to his calls for justice in human hearts. His alienation from the world only intensifies.

It is unlikely that Lermontov experienced a sudden religious insight. It’s just that faith has remained the only means of salvation when other possibilities have already been exhausted. There is evidence that the poet was greatly influenced by communication with M. Shcherbatova, who urged him to turn to God.

A calm and sad poem still does not fit into religious standards. It makes no mention of God, saints or any biblical characters at all. The author does not resort to repentance, which in theory should have been done in the first place, given his life and actions. He humbles his pride, but does not admit his mistakes. Lermontov's prayer is simple and easy. Its specific content is completely unimportant. What matters is the very “consonance of living words.” Their combination has incredible power, allowing a person to throw off the heavy burden of accumulated experiences and suffering. Prayer can cleanse the soul and make it possible to continue to carry one’s cross in life.

The poem is surprisingly lyrical and musical. Subsequently, a romance was created on its basis.

The verse “In a difficult moment of life” has become a vivid example of religious lyrics. In our time, it is very highly valued among followers of unorthodox Christian teachings.

Subjects

Experiencing a state of mental crisis, the lyrical hero turns to God for help. He prays for peace and consolation to be sent down to him.

The poem does not contain the text of the prayer, but the author perfectly describes the beneficial effect of the “harmonies of living words” after which he “believes and cries, and so easily, easily...”.

Every person experiences difficult periods in life. Misunderstanding of others and loneliness increase despair, sadness, and confusion. How to cope with this heavy load? In the hope of finding peace of mind, the lyrical hero of the work turns to prayer. In it - “in the consonance of the words of the living” - he finds consolation.

Composition

The poem “Prayer” consists of three stanzas. In terms of its content, semantic load, as well as the simplicity of the expression of thoughts, it can really be compared with the real prayer discussed in the work.

The first stanza of the work talks about a difficult period that absolutely anyone can face. At this moment the person becomes very sad and lonely. He is constantly depressed, he is suppressed by circumstances, and sadness also appears for no reason. The combination of all these factors forces our lyrical hero to resort to prayer, in which he finds peace and tranquility.

In a difficult moment of life

Is there sadness in my heart,

One wonderful prayer

I repeat it by heart.

In the second stanza, the poet begins to describe the prayer itself, and what power it contains. The poet is fascinated by her riddle, secret, and that same “incomprehensible holy charm” that is contained in such simple but sincere words.

There is a power of grace

In the consonance of living words,

And an incomprehensible one breathes,

Holy beauty in them.

The final stanza contains the effect of prayer. The way only she knows how to heal and calm. Thanks to the words spoken and the tears shed, a person is cleansed of severe sadness and sadness. After this, in his purified soul there is room for faith in the future, dreams and hopes.

Like a burden will roll off your soul,

Doubt is far away -

And I believe and cry,

And so easy, easy...

Idea

The idea of the work is an image of the complex and contradictory inner world of the lyrical hero .

Contemporaries noted that Lermontov had a difficult character. He himself admitted that his character later caused frequent misunderstandings in relationships with other people and brought moral suffering to himself.

The theme of loneliness, his reflections on life, the desire to find understanding and ease his state of mind are reflected in other works of the poet.

Artistic originality of the work

The peculiarities of this work include the fact that the author was able to convey the essence of the prayer without naming it. The reader does not know what kind of prayer the author had in mind, but at the same time, the solemnity of the moment of the lyrical hero’s appeal to God is clearly felt. In particular, this is facilitated by pompous vocabulary: “wonderful prayer”, “gracious power”, etc.

The solemnity of the narrative is also enhanced by the sound design - in the first stanza, the multiple use of words with the sound “u” gives it a touch of church sound.

The work, being secular in writing - it does not use Church Slavonic vocabulary - at the same time, it conveys the high religious feeling that gripped the lyrical hero.

Analysis of Lermontov’s poem “Prayer” (2 version)

Two facts from the author’s biography are associated with the appearance of “Prayer”. In 1839, the poet received as a gift from Prince Odoevsky the Gospel and a collection of medieval texts of spiritual content translated from Greek. The donor suggested that the poet turn to Christian literature more often. Lermontov heard approximately the same words from Maria Shcherbatova, a woman with “childlike faith” in God. The beautiful princess advised her admirer to pray to get rid of the melancholy mood. The poem became a poetic response to the simple but wise recommendations of loved ones.

The author’s focus is on the movements of the soul of the lyrical hero: from sadness and doubt to enlightenment and peace. Positive metamorphosis is possible if you enlist the help of “living words” of “wonderful prayer.”

The state of painful sadness stated in the first lines is conveyed at the phonetic level: assonance is based on the predominance of the vowel sound “u”. The hero’s mental discomfort, bordering on physical illness, is emphasized by the verb “crowded.”

In the central part of the work, the motif of the power of the word, sanctified by faith, develops. The author accumulates vocabulary with religiously sublime positive semantics: “wonderful”, “gracious”, “holy beauty”. Sincerity is the main quality of the healing word. The power of “living speeches” is incomprehensible to the human mind - this is emphasized by the definition “incomprehensible” - but the heart is able to feel the highest harmony to which time-tested verbal formulas are involved.

In the last two quatrains, the phonetic structure of the poem changes: sounds that convey heartache and anxiety are replaced by assonance based on “and” and “a”. The hero's soul is gradually freed from the burden, which is demonstrated by changes in the sound accents of the work.

The final quatrain describes the healing effect of sincere prayer. To depict the feelings of the lyrical subject, the poet turns to homogeneous impersonal constructions - a technique characteristic of Lermontov’s poetics. Impersonal verbs and adverbs adjacent to them form an antithesis with the lexeme “crowded”, which appeared in the initial lines.

Contrasting has two important functions. With its help, the way to get rid of despondency looks clearer and more convincing, and it also frames the poetic text, closing the overall composition. Anaphoras, which abound in the last couplet, draw attention to the new state of the soul of the lyrical “I” - light, free, enlightened.

Meaning of the work

The poem “Prayer” can be called the source of religious and philosophical lyrics. This tradition was later continued by A. Blok and S. Yesenin.

Written in clear and simple language, “Prayer” has become a truly popular work. For almost two centuries, M. Glinka’s romance to the words of Lermontov enjoyed enormous popularity in various strata of society; it is still in the classical repertoire of many opera singers. Other composers also wrote their own music for this work.
