Autumn in the yard. First of September. It would seem that everything is as usual, but each time with its own surprises. The first of September 2021 was the first in the history of education when not only children, but also parents sat down at their desks. And in this changed reality, they began to think about what education is and why they need it in the modern world.
This situation is reminiscent of the famous parable about the centipede, which, wondering which leg to start moving with, immediately began to stumble. The same stumbling and simultaneous getting rid of stereotypes appears behind the questions of children, parents and teachers, to which today there is no single correct answer.
The main semantic question is: why go to school?
When I come to school, I sit at my desk... And for all 11 years I will sit, chained to this desk. They will tell me what to do and how to answer questions that were not posed by me. I will turn into a person for whom other people make decisions and who is given knowledge without explaining why I need it. This issue has often been raised in the past, but never as acute as this year.
Why do we need a school in those classical forms that the great John Amos Comenius offered us, creating a medieval workshop in which “average students” were produced, like standard products?
Thanks to Jan Amos Comenius, the classroom system began to be perceived as hair or eye color. It seems to be given to us, in the literal sense of the word, from birth. But the world has changed.
And questions arise: can the class-lesson system, proposed in the Middle Ages, remain the only technology for transmitting knowledge? Are there other ways to transfer knowledge? What will replace the usual existing school teaching technology?
I don't know the person who could answer them.
I said and will say again: the main task of the school is the task of building a bridge between different generations, and the school is a unique meeting space in which adults and children master the most difficult of arts - the art of hearing and understanding each other.
Once upon a time, my departed friend, the wonderful historian Yuri Afanasyev, at the time of Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov’s speech before the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, said: “Lord, what an aggressively obedient majority.” The key change of today is that parents, children and teachers are no longer the silent, aggressively obedient majority, and this is a pleasing feature of our difficult times with its challenges of complexity, uncertainty and diversity.

Reasons for poor performance
An important stage in the beginning of education is the school years. It is during this period that learning skills, a love of books and acquiring new information are instilled, and initial goals are set. But it often happens like this: a child who is happy to go to first grade, by the end of elementary school “slides” into C grades and does not want to go to lessons.
The opinion of parents that “you just have to study” is a bad motivation for a child to improve the level of his education. And if he still asks “Why is it important to study?”, the answer should be detailed. It is not necessary to be an excellent student in all classes; it is enough to have basic knowledge of the main subjects. But you will have to really devote a lot of time to what is necessary for your future profession.
All reasons for poor school performance are divided into three groups:
- physiological (heredity, poor health, non-standard mental abilities);
- social (low family well-being, area of residence, conflicts and unfavorable environment in the classroom or family);
- psychological.
If the reasons for poor performance are physiological, correction is carried out after a full medical examination. If social, then it may be necessary to either change the area or school. If the situation in the family is unfavorable, the help of a psychologist will be required.
Psychological nuances
If a child regularly goes to school, has no unexcused absences, but constantly receives unsatisfactory grades, then there are psychological reasons for poor performance. In most cases, these problems are associated with motivation, reluctance to study certain subjects, or the child “does not know how to study.” The following reasons should be considered:
- characteristics of the nervous system and lack of willpower;
- undeveloped knowledge acquisition skills;
- lack of arguments for the desire to study and achieve success;
- school subjects are uninteresting;
- poorly developed memory, logical thinking, attentiveness, verbal and thought processes.
All these problems can be easily corrected under the supervision of a psychologist. But a specialist alone cannot do anything. Constant parental supervision and teacher support will be required. The main thing is not to waste time, because all great inventions were created by people who, as children, had a thirst for knowledge, an inquisitive mind, and a desire to get to the bottom of things.
Parents' actions
Curiosity and the desire to learn new things are inherent in a child by nature. But over time, children understand that teachers always first of all require obedience and compliance with established rules. They are not interested in individual opinions, additional knowledge, or the desire for self-expression.
It is especially difficult for teenagers. Perhaps, if a student suddenly stopped studying, he was simply tired of struggling with such an education system. In this case, parents will need a special plan to combat school failure:
- Start taking part in the student’s life. You shouldn’t demand complete submission and dedication to all the “secrets.” If previously the parent limited himself to the question “how are you?” on weekends, it will be quite difficult to gain trust. The teenager has developed his own personal life, and letting his parents into it just because they decided to go into teaching will not work.
- Learn to respect all types of child activities: school, extracurricular, sports, and so on.
- Help with studies. It’s good if the parent understands the objects that the child has “neglected.” Otherwise, you will have to hire a tutor and purchase additional educational materials.
- Be sure to reward even the smallest successes. And, on the contrary, he is tolerant of failures (if everything is done correctly, they will be temporary).
- Encouraging curiosity and curiosity. There are many different programs that explain complex topics in an accessible or playful way. You can find historical and documentary films, books, encyclopedias, excursions (including virtual ones).
- In some cases, problems should be resolved only by parents (for example, in case of conflicts with teachers), and in some cases the child’s right to make independent decisions will have to be recognized. In any case, it is necessary to discuss situations together.
- Encouraging initiative and positive independence (but not self-efficacy).
- Participation in the affairs and events of the class, school, encouraging an active life position.
The most difficult situation will be for those parents who until now have not provided adequate attention to their child. If a teenager has been left to his own devices for many years and solves his problems on his own, the steps taken in his senior year will be ineffective.
Education is not a school certificate “excellent”, a lot of certificates and a diploma with honors. This is a certain set of qualities, characteristics, skills and knowledge. It is impossible to master all this by acquiring only academic knowledge. You will have to improve throughout your life, and not just professionally.
How will the school help in the future?
If possible, describe why you go to school and how it will help in the future. It is recommended to talk with parents and older relatives so that they can tell how studying helped them and why they should go to lessons at all. Regardless of what profession there is, study is mandatory. Even if a person chooses to become a cook, he must know a little chemistry, anatomy and mathematics in order to understand which ingredients can be mixed and which cannot.
