Description of the estate, village and house

Having brought Chichikov and his son-in-law to visit him, Nozdryov took them to inspect his village. They examined the stables, the pond, the kennel, the water mill, and the forge. The owner led the guests to the very border where his land ended. This excursion showed that dogs live here freely and comfortably. Nozdryov loves them very much, they replace his family: his wife died, and the landowner is not at all interested in his two children, whom the nanny is looking after.

Chichikov's attitude towards Nozdryov
