The Tale of Frol Skobeev
There lived a poor nobleman Frol Skobeev in the Novgorod district. In the same district there was the estate of steward Nardin-Nashchokin. The steward’s daughter, Annushka, lived there. Frol decided to “have love” with Annushka. He met the steward of this estate and went to visit him. At this time, their mother came to them, who was always with Annushka. Frol gave his mother two rubles, but didn’t say why.

Christmas time arrived, and Annushka invited noble daughters from all over the area to her party. Her mother also came to Frol to invite his sister to the party. The sister, at Frol’s instigation, announced to the mother that she would come to the party with her girlfriend. When she began to get ready to visit, Frol asked her to give him a girl’s outfit too. The sister was scared, but did not dare to disobey her brother.
At the party, no one recognized Frol in his girl’s attire, not even the mother. Then Frol Skobeev gave his mother five rubles and confessed everything... She promised to help him.
The mother offered the girls a new game - wedding. Annushka was the bride, and Frol Skobeev (whom everyone took for the girl) was the groom. The “young” were taken to the bedroom. There, Frol Skobeev revealed himself to Annushka and deprived her of her innocence. Then the girls came in to them, but didn’t know anything. Annushka quietly reproached her mother, but she rejected all accusations, stated that she knew nothing about it, and even offered to kill Frol for such a “dirty thing.” But Annushka felt sorry for Frol. The next morning she released all the girls, and left Frol and her sister with her for three days. She gave him money, and Frol began to live much richer than before.

Annushka's father, Nardin-Nashchokin, ordered his daughter to go to Moscow, because there were good suitors wooing her there. Having learned about Annushka’s departure, Frol Skobeev decided to follow her and marry the girl at all costs.
Frol stayed in Moscow not far from Nardin-Nashchokin’s courtyard. In church he met Annushka’s mother. The mother told the girl about the arrival of Frol Skobeev. Annushka was delighted and sent Frol money.
The steward had a nun sister. When her brother came to her monastery, the nun began to ask to be allowed to see her niece. Nardin-Nashchokin promised to let his daughter go to the monastery. The nun said that she would send a carriage for Annushka.
Getting ready to go on a visit, the father warned Annushka that a carriage from the nun sister could arrive at any time. Let, they say, Annushka get into the carriage and go to the monastery. Hearing about this, the girl immediately sent her mother to Frol Skobeev so that he could get a carriage somewhere and come to her.
Frol lived only by going about his business. Poverty did not allow him to have a carriage. But he came up with a plan. Frol went to the steward Lovchikov and asked for a carriage for a while “to view the bride.” Lovchikov complied with his request. Then Frol got the coachman drunk, dressed himself in a lackey's dress, sat on the box and went to Annushka. The mother, seeing Frol Skobeev, announced that they had come for Annushka from the monastery. The girl got ready and went to Frol Skobeev’s apartment. The father returned home and did not find his daughter, but was completely calm, knowing that she was in the monastery. Meanwhile, Frol married Annushka.

Frol brought the carriage with the drunken coachman to Lovchikov’s yard. Lovchikov tried to ask the coachman about where the carriage was and what happened, but the poor guy didn’t remember anything.
After some time, Nardin-Nashchokin went to the monastery to see his sister and asked her where Annushka was. The nun answered with surprise that she had not sent a carriage and had not seen her niece. The father began to grieve for his missing daughter. The next morning he went to the sovereign and reported what had happened. The Emperor ordered a search for the capital's daughter. He ordered Annushka’s kidnapper to show up. And if the thief does not show up himself, but is found, then he will be executed.
Then Frol Skobeev went to the steward Lovchikov, told about his action and asked for help. Lovchikov refused, but Frol threatened to accuse him of complicity: who gave the carriage? Lovchikov gave Frol advice: to throw himself at the feet of Nardin-Nashchokin in front of everyone. And he, Lovchikov, will stand up for Frol.
The next day, after mass in the Assumption Cathedral, all the attendants went out to Ivanovskaya Square to talk. Nardin-Nashchokin recalled the disappearance of his daughter. And at that time Skobeev came out in front of everyone and fell at the feet of Nardin-Nashchokin. The steward picked him up, and Frol announced to him his marriage to Annushka. The shocked steward began to threaten that he would complain about Frol to the king. But Lovchikov calmed Nardin-Nashchokin a little, and he went home.
At first the steward and his wife cried about the fate of their daughter, and then they sent a servant to find out how she was living. Having learned about this, Frol Skobeev ordered his young wife to pretend to be sick. Frol explained to the arriving servant that Annushka was sick from her father’s anger. The steward, having heard such news, felt sorry for his daughter and decided to at least bless her in absentia. He sent the young people an icon.

The servant took the icon and took it to Frol. And before his arrival, Frol ordered Anna to sit down at the table. He explained to his father-in-law's servant that Annushka had recovered from her parents' blessing. The servant told the master everything. After this, the steward went to the tsar, reported that his daughter had been found, and asked to forgive Skobeev. The Emperor agreed.
Then Nardin-Nashchokin sent Skobeev all sorts of supplies, and he began to live richly. And after some time, the steward invited his son-in-law and daughter to his place. The parents at first scolded Annushka, but then they seated her and Frol at the table. Having mercy, Nardin-Nashchokin gave Frol two of his estates, and then gave him money.
A few years later the steward died. He made Frol Skobeev his heir. And Frol lived his life “in great glory and wealth.”
THE STORY ABOUT THE RUSSIAN NOBLEMAN FROL SKOBEEV AND THE CAPITAL DAUGHTER OF NARDIN-NASHCHOKIN ANNUSHKA. 1
In the Novogorod district there was a nobleman Frol Skobeev; in the same Novgorod district, the steward Nardin-Nashchokin had his estates, and in those estates of that steward there was a daughter, Annushka, who lived in those estates. Frol Skobeev found out about that captain’s daughter, and took the intention of having love with that Annushka and seeing each other; however, he decided to share that estate with the clerk, and always went to that clerk’s house. After some time, Frol Skobeev happened to be at the house, and at the same time the mother of Nardin-Nashchokin’s daughter came to that clerk; and Frol Skobeev noticed that that mother always lived with Annushka. And when that mother went from the clerk to her mistress Annushka, Frol Skobeev went out after her and gave that mother two rubles. And that mother announced to him: “Mr. Skobeev, it is not because of my merits that you deign to show me your mercy, because my service is not available to you.” Frol Skobeev gave that money to that mother and left her, and nothing about that [4]
I didn’t tell her. And that mother came to her mistress Annushka, but did not announce anything to her; and Frol Skobeev sat with that clerk and went into the house! And during the merry evenings that happened in the joy of girlhood, called, according to the maiden title, Christmastide, and that steward Nardin-Nashchokin’s daughter Annushka ordered her mother to go to all the nobles who live in the vicinity of that patrimony of the steward Nardin-Nashchokin ; Which nobles have daughters, girls, so that they can ask those daughters to go to that capital’s daughter Annushka, for fun at a party. And that mother went to ask all the noble daughters to come to Annushka for a party, for fun, and therefore everyone promised to attend her request. And that mother knows that Frol Skobeev has a sister, a girl; and that mother came to Frol Skobeev’s house to ask his sister to come to the house of the steward Nardin-Nashchokin’s daughter, Annushka. And that sister Frol Skobeeva told that mother to wait a little time: “I’m going to see my brother; If he orders me to go, then I will announce it to you.” And how Frol Skobeeva’s sister came to her brother and announced to him that the mother had come to her from the capital’s daughter of Nardin-Nashchokin, Annushka, to ask me to come to their house. Frol Skobeev said to his sister: “Go and tell that mother that you will not be alone, but of some nobleman with a girl’s daughter.” And that sister Frol Skobeeva began to think very much about what her brother told her to say; however, she was afraid to disobey her brother’s will, and announced to that mother, on her brother’s orders, that she would be visiting her mistress that evening with a certain noblewoman’s daughter. And that mother went to the house of her mistress Annushka.
And Frol Skobeev began to say to his sister: “Well, sister, it’s time for you to get out and go on a visit.” And that sister of his, as she began to get into her maiden dress, Frol Skobeev said to his sister: “Bring it, sister, for me too.” [5]
girl’s dress: I’ll clean up too, and we’ll go with you to the steward’s daughter Annushka.” And his sister was very sad about this, because if they recognize him, then, of course, there will be great trouble for my brother, because the steward Nardin-Nashchokin is very of great mercy is with the king;
However, she did not listen to her brother and brought him a girl’s dress. Frol Skobeev got into his maiden clothes and went with his sister to the house of the steward Nardin-Nashchokin to his daughter Annushka. And many nobles’ daughters gathered, and no one could recognize Frol Skobeev in his maiden dress. And all the girls began to have fun with various games, and they had fun for a long time, and Frol Skobeev was having fun with them, and no one could recognize him. And then Frol Skobeev wanted to go... and Frol Skobeev was... alone, and his mother stood in the hallway with a candle. And so Frol Skobeev came out... and began to say to his mother: “how, mother, there are many of our sisters, noble daughters, and yet your service to us is great, and no one can give anything for your service.” And the mother cannot admit that he is Frol Skobeev. And he took out five rubles and gave it to his mother with great coercion. And the mother took that money, and Frol Skobeev saw that she could not recognize him, then Frol Skobeev fell at the feet of that mother, and announced himself that he was Frol Skobeev, a nobleman, and came in a girl’s dress for Annushka, so that with her have obligatory love. And when the mother saw that it was truly Frol Skobeev, she became in great confusion and did not know what to do with him; However, remembering him to himself two many gifts: “Good, Mr. Skobeev, for your mercy to me; I’m ready to fix everything according to your will.” And she came to peace, where the girls were all having fun, and did not announce this to anyone. And that mother began to say to her mistress Annushka: “Come on, girls, have fun, I’ll announce a game for you, just like we played before.” And that Annushka did not listen to her mother’s will and began to say to her: “Well, mother, if you please, it’s your will for all our girlish games.” [6]
And that mother announced a game to them: “If you please, Mrs. Annushka, you will be the bride of Frol Skobeev’s son, this girl will be your groom.”
And she led them to special chambers to rest, as is customary at a wedding; all the girls went to accompany them to those chambers, and came back to those chambers in which they had fun before. And that mother was having fun with the girls, and ordered them to sing loud songs so that they would not hear screams from them. And Frol Skobeeva’s sister was very much in great sadness, she felt sorry for her brother, and hopes that, of course, there will be reasons. And Frol Skobeev... announced to her that he was Frol Skobeev, and not a girl. And Annushka did not know what to answer to him, she became in great fear... Then that Annushka asked that Frol Skobeev, so that he would not encircle her with others. Then the mother and all the girls came to that peace... and Annushka began to have a changeable face, and no one could recognize the girls as Frol Skobeev, because he was wearing a girl’s dress. And that Annushka did not announce this to anyone, she just took her mother by the hand and took her away from those girls, and began to speak to her skillfully: “What did you do to me, that it was not a girl with me: he is a courageous man, the nobleman Frol Skobeev.” And that mother announced to her: “truly, my lady, I could not recognize him, I thought that she was a girl like the others; and when he did such a trifle, you know that we have a lot of people: we can hide him in a mortal place.” That’s why Annushka, feeling sorry for that Frol Skobeev: “Well, mommy, it’s already like this, I can’t return that.” And all the girls went to the feast chamber, and Annushka with them, and Frol Skobeev in the same maiden dress, and had fun for a long time during the night. Then all the girls began to have peace... And in the morning all the girls began to go home to their homes, and Annushka Frol Skobeeva and her sister did not let him go, but left Frol Skobeeva, and she was with her for three days, all in girlish attire, so that his people They didn’t recognize him, and everyone was having fun with Annushka. After three days, Frol Skobeev went to [7]
his house with his sister. Annushka gave that Frol Skobeev 500 rubles. Frol Skobeev arrived at his house, very glad that he had made contact with Annushka, and held banquets and had fun with other nobles and his brothers.
And the father of the steward Nardin-Nashchokin writes from Moscow to his patrimony to his daughter Annushka, so that she goes to Moscow so that suitors, the capital’s children, woo her. And Annushka did not disobey the will of her parent: she soon got ready and went to Moscow. Then Frol Skobeev found out that Annushka had left for Moscow, and he became in great confusion, did not know what to do, since he was not a rich nobleman, but had more food for himself - he always went about business. And he set himself the intention of how he could get Annushka as his wife. Then Frol Skobeev began to go to Moscow, and his sister, Velmi, condolences about this. Frol Skobeev said to his sister: “Well, sister, don’t worry about anything: although I’ll lose my belly, I won’t leave Annushka: either I’ll be a colonel or a dead man. If anything happens according to my intention, then I will not leave you, but if misfortune happens, then remember your brother.” And having cleaned up, he went to Moscow. And Frol Skobeev arrived in Moscow and stood in an apartment near Nardin-Nashchokin’s yard. The next day, Frol Skobeev went to mass and saw the mother who was with Annushka. And after the liturgy, Frol Skobeev came out of the church and began to wait for his mother. And as that mother left the church, Frol Skobeev approached that mother, bowed to her and asked her to announce him to Annushka. And when the mother came home, she announced him to Annushka and his arrival. Annushka became overjoyed and asked her mother to go to mass tomorrow and take 20 rubles with her and give it to Frol Skobeev, and her mother did it according to her will. That steward Nardin-Nashchokin had a sister who was tonsured in a nunnery. And that steward [8]
came to visit his sister at the monastery. And the sister met her brother with honor. Steward Nardin-Nashchokin visited his sister for a long time and talked a lot. Then his sister humbly asked her brother to let his daughter Annushka go to the monastery for a visit, and her niece, so that she would not see her for a long time. And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin promised to let his daughter go to her. And his sister announced to him: “I don’t hope, sir, brother, that you will do this to her at my request, because you will forget, but I ask you, please order in your house, although when in your absence at home, I will send a carriage for her.” and appeared so that you ordered her to go to me without you.” Some time later the steward Nardin-Nashchokin happened to go on a visit with his wife, and he ordered his daughter: “if your sister sends a carriage for you from the monastery and comes, then go to her.” And I went to visit myself. And Annushka asks her mother to go to Frol Skobeev as soon as possible, and tell him to ask for a carriage with provisions as soon as possible, and come to her himself, and say that it’s from the steward Nardin-Nashchokin’s sister, and come after Annushka from the nunnery.” And that mother went to Frol Skobeev and told him everything according to her orders.
And as Frol Skobeev heard, he doesn’t know what to do, or how to deceive anyone, so that they know him: he’s not a rich nobleman, he’s just a sneaker of the great, he intercedes for business. And it came to Skobeev’s memory that the steward Lovchikov was very kind to him, and he went to him. And how Frol Skobeev came to the steward Lovchikov, and that steward had happy conversations with him. Then Frol Skobeev began to ask that steward to grant him a carriage with provisions to go to look at the bride. And Lovchikov gave him a carriage with a carriage and a coachman. And Frol Skobeev went and came to his apartment, and made that coachman drunk, and he himself [9]
He got dressed in a lackey's dress, sat down on the box and went to the steward Nardin-Nashchokin along Annushka. And Annushka’s mother saw that Skobeev had arrived, and told Annushka, under the guise of other servants of that house, that her aunt had sent her from the monastery. And that Annushka cleaned up and got into the carriage, and drove to Frol Skobeev’s apartment. And that coachman of Lovchikov woke up, and Frol Skobeev saw that that coachman of Lovchikov was not so drunk, and he made him very drunk and put him in the carriage, and he himself got into the box and went to Lovchikov. And when he arrived at the courtyard, he opened the gate and let the people with the carriage into the courtyard. And Lovchikov’s people saw that there was a carriage standing in the yard, and the coachman was lying in the carriage drunk, they went and announced to Lovchikov that the coachman was drunk and sleeping in the carriage, and they didn’t know who brought them here. And Lovchikov ordered the carriage and the appearances to be removed and said: “It’s good that he didn’t leave everything: there’s nothing to take from Frol Skobeev.” And in the morning Lovchikov began asking the coachman where he had been with Frol Skobeev. And the coachman told him: “I just remember how I arrived at his apartment, but where he, Skobeev, went and what he did, I don’t know.” And steward Nardin-Nashchokin came from among the guests and asked about his daughter Annushka. And that mother said that, on your orders, she let you go to your sister in the monastery, so that she sent a carriage and appeared. The steward Nardin-Nashchokin said: “pretty much.”
And steward Nardin-Nashchokin has not visited his sister for a long time, and hopes that his daughter Annushka is in the monastery with his sister. And Frol Skobeev is marrying Annushka. Then steward Pardish-Nashchokin went to the monastery to visit his sister, and sat with his sister for a long time, and did not see his daughter, and asked his sister: “Sister, why don’t I see Annushka?” And his sister answered him: “That’s enough, brother, mock me. What should I do when I am indifferent to my requests: I asked to send her to me; But [10]
I know that you don’t believe me, but I don’t have the time to send her.” And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin said to his sister: “How, Madam sister, what do you deign to say about this, I cannot judge, for the fact that she was sent to you for a month already, because you sent a carriage for her and appeared, and at that time I was visiting with my wife, by our order she was released to you.” And his sister told him: “Brother, I never sent a carriage, and Annushka never came.” And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin was very sorry for his daughter, he searched a lot, and did not find it anywhere, and he wept bitterly, and came to his house, and told his wives that Annushka had disappeared, and said that his sister was not in the monastery. And he began to ask his mother who came with the problems. And that mother said: “The coachman came with the horses and the carriage, and said that Annushka came from the nunnery from your sister, and by your order Annushka went.” And the steward and his wife were very sorry about this and cried bitterly.
And in the morning, steward Nardin-Nashchokin went to the sovereign and announced that his daughter had disappeared. And the sovereign ordered the public to be massacred. Frol Skobeev did not know what to do, and decided to go to Colonel Lovchikov and tell him that Lovchikov was very kind to him. And Frol Skobeev came to Lovchikov and had many conversations with him. The steward Lovchikov asked Frol Skobeev: “What, Mr. Skobeev, did you get married?” And Skobeev said: “I got married!” - “Did you take the rich one?” And Skobeev said: “I still don’t see the wealth that time will bring in the future.” And Lovchikov said to Skobeev: “Well, Mr. Skobeev, live forever; stop chasing sneaks; live in your patrimony; better, healthier." Then Frol Skobeev began to ask that steward Lovchikov to be his representative in trouble. And Lovchikov announced to him: “Tell me that if it’s bearable, I’ll [11]
prostate;
if something is intolerable, still be angry.” Frol Skobeev announced to him that the steward Nardin-Nashchokin’s daughter Annushka was with me, and I married her. And the steward Lovchikov said: “As you did, so be responsible.” And Frol Skobeev said: “If you don’t intercede on my behalf, then you too will suffer, but it has already come to me to speak out against you, for the reason that you appeared and gave the carriage; If you hadn’t given it, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.” And Lovchikov became in great doubt and said to him: “You are a real rogue; what did you do to me? Good! I will intercede as best I can.” And he said to him: “Tomorrow come to the Assumption Cathedral, there the steward Nardin-Nashchokin will be at mass, and I will be with him. And after mass the entire congregation will stand on Ivanskaya Square; and at that time come before him and tell him about his daughter, and I will intercede as best I can.” And Frol Skobeev came to the Assumption Cathedral for mass, and steward Nardin-Nashchokin, and Lovchikov, and other stewards were all at mass. After the departure of the liturgy, at that time there was a meeting on Ivanskaya Square, opposite Ivan the Great; and all the stewards gathered in this square, and Nardin-Nashchokin was there, and these stewards had conversations among themselves about what they needed. And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin, more sympathetic, talks about his daughter, and the steward Lovchikov talks about the same with him, inclining him to mercy. And during those conversations, Frol Skobeev came and bowed to all the stewards as usual. All the stewards know Frol Skobeev, and besides all the stewards, Frol Skobeev fell at the feet of the steward Nardin and asked for forgiveness: “Dear sir, steward first! Let the wine go, as thy servant, who stood bold before you.” And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin was ancient in years and his eyesight was already darkened by antiquity; however, he could still see the man. At that time, it was the custom of those old people to carry natural canes with clubs in their hands. And with that [12]
stick you lift Frol Skobeev and asks him: “Who are you, tell me about yourself, and what is your need for us.”
And Frol Skobeev only says: “let go of my guilt.” The steward Lovchikov, approached the steward Nardin-Nashchokin, and told him: “The nobleman Frol Skobeev is lying before you and asking for forgiveness of his guilt.” And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin shouted: “You’re a rogue; I have known you for a long time, a rogue, a sneak; It’s unbearable to know that you lied to yourself. Tell me, rogue, that when it’s bearable, I’ll try to take care of you, and when it’s unbearable, as you wish; I told you, you rogue, long ago: live constantly. Stand up and tell me it’s your fault?” And Frol Skobeev stood at his feet and announced to him that he had his daughter Annushka and married her. And when steward Nardin-Nashchokin heard from him about his daughter, he burst into tears and became unconscious. And little came to his senses, he began to say to him: “What have you done, you rogue? Do you know who you are? do you have remission from me of your guilt? Should you, you rogue, own my daughter? I will go to the Tsar and ask you about your rogue offense against me.” And the steward came to him again and began to talk to him, so that he would soon not be able to go to the sovereign. “You would like to go home and announce your seventh wife, and according to the general advice, act as for the best: you will not return that time; and he, Skobeev, cannot hide from our anger anywhere.” And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin listened to the advice of the steward Lovchikov and did not go to the Tsar, and got into the carriage and went to his house. And Frol Skobeev went to his apartment and said to Annushka: “Well, Annushka, I don’t know what will happen to you and me: I announced about you to your father.” And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin came to his house and went to rest, crying cruelly and shouting: “wife! what do you know? I found Annushka.” And his wife asks him: “Where is she, father?” And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin said to his wife: “after all, the rogue and sneaker Frol Skobeev married her.” His wife heard his speeches and did not know what to say, [13]
feeling sorry for her daughter.
And they both began to cry bitterly, and in their hearts to scold their daughter, and they cursed and did not know what to do to her. And they came to their memories and, feeling sorry for their daughter, began to reason: “We must send a man to where he, the rogue, lives, and find out about his daughter, whether she is alive.” And they called their man and sent him to find Frol Skobeev’s apartment, and ordered him to find out about Annushka, see if she was alive and if you had food. And the man went to look for Frol Skobeev’s apartment, and Frol Skobeev saw that a man had come from his father-in-law, and ordered his wife to lie down on the bed and pretend to be severely ill. And Annushka did it according to the will of her husband, and the man sent entered the chamber and bowed, as usual. And Frol Skobeev asked: “What kind of person is this?” and what need do you have of me?” And the man said that he had been sent by steward Nardin-Nashchokin to check on Annushka and see if she was well. And Frol Skobeev said to that sent person: “Do you see, my friend, how healthy you are? Such is her parents’ anger: they scold and curse in absentia, and that’s why she lies dying. Bring their mercy, although they gave her a verbal blessing in absentia.” And the man bowed to them and left them. And he came to his master, the steward Nardin-Nashchokin, and the steward asked him: “Did you find the apartment, and did you see Annushka? is she alive or not? And that man announced that Annushka was severely ill and would barely be alive, and demanded a blessing from you, even verbally in absentia. And the steward and his wife were cruelly sorry for their daughter, discussing what to do with the thief and the rogue, but they were more sorry for their daughter. Nardin’s wife began to say: “Well, my friend, God has already judged this way; it is necessary, my friend, to send them in their image and, although in absentia, to bless them; and when our heart is softened towards them, then we can see them ourselves.” And they took an image from the wall, which was covered with gold and precious stones, and a butt worth only 500 rubles, and sent it with the same [14]
person, and ordered to tell her to pray to this image, and tell the rogue and thief Frolka Skobeev to he didn't waste it. And the man, having taken on the image, went to the courtyard of Frol Skobeev, and Frol Skobeev saw that the same man had come, and said to his wife: “Get up, Annushka!” And his wife, Annushka, sat down with Frol Skobeev, and the man entered into peace and gave the image to Frol Skobeev. And having taken the image, he placed it where it should be, and said to that man: “Such is a parental blessing! and how they intend to bless in absentia, and God made it easier for Annushka; Now, thank God, I’m healthy.” And Frol Skobeev said, as did Annushka: “Thank your father and mother for their parental mercy.” And the man came to his master and announced to him about the giving of the image and about Annushka’s health and their thanksgiving, and he went to his shown place. And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin began to reason with his wife, and regretted his daughter: “What, friend, should this be! Of course, the rogue will starve Annushka to death: what should he, a thief, feed her? and he himself, like a dog, is hungry; it is necessary, my friend, to send whatever reserve there is on six horses.” And they sent that supply, and with that supply the register. And Frol Skobeev, despite the register, ordered the supply to be put in the shown place, and ordered those people to thank for the parental favors shown. Already Frol Skobeev lives and travels luxuriously everywhere with noble people; and Skobeev was very surprised that he did such a thing boldly.
And after a long time, the parents turned in heart and sympathized with their souls about their daughter, as well as about Frol Skobeev, and ordered to send a man to them to ask them, so that Frol Skobeev and his wife, and their daughter, would come to the steward Nardin-Nashchokin to eat bread. And the man sent came and began to ask Frol Skobeev, so that he would deign to come that day with his wife to eat. And Frol Skobeev said to the man: “Tell the priest: [15]
I am ready to be at their mercy this day.”
And Frol Skobeev left with his wife Annushka and went to the house of his steward’s father-in-law Nardin-Nashchokin. And when he arrived at his house and went to rest, his wife Annushka came to her father and fell at the feet of her parents. And Nardin-Nashchokin looked at his daughter, and began to scold her and punish her with his parental anger, and looking at her, they cried cruelly that she had done this without her parent’s will; however, leaving all their anger to their parents, they absolved her of the guilt and ordered her to sit down with them, and Nardin said to Frol Skobeev: “And you, you rogue, why are you standing? sit down right there, do you, the rogue, want to own my daughter?” And Frol Skobeev said: “Well, sir, father, God has already judged him this way.” And they all sat down to eat together. And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin ordered his people not to let strangers into the house; If someone comes and asks if the steward Nardin-Nashchokin is at home, say that there is no time to see the steward, because he is eating with his son-in-law, the thief and rogue Frolka. And at the end of the table, Stolnik Nardin-Nashchokin asks: “Well, rogue, how will you live?” And Frol Skobeev announced: how should I live, do you deign to know nothing more about me, why go after a sneak?” - “I have my estate in the Simbirsk district, which according to the census consists of three hundred households, manage, rogue, for yourself, and live constantly with your wife Annushka.” And Frol Skobeev brought thanks before him. “Rogue, do not bow; go and do it for yourself.” And after sitting for a while, Frol Skobeev and his wife went to their apartment. And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin ordered him to be turned back, and began to say to him: “How will you cope? if you have money? - “It is known, sir, what kind of money I have.” And he ordered to give him 500 rubles. Skobeev took the money and went to the apartment, and over time he took over that estate for himself. And the steward Nardin-Nashchokin did not live for long, and during his lifetime he made Frol Skobeev his heir in all his movable and non- movable
estates, and Frol Skobeev began to live in great wealth, and the steward Nardin-Nashchokin died with his wife, and Frol Skobeev remained with his Annushka, and became a great nobility, and married his sister with a great reward to some captain’s son, and that’s how this story ended.

1 . This old story was found last year by I. D. Belyaev, while describing my manuscripts that were received by the Imperial Public Library, in one of the collections of the last century. Recently it was sent to me by the venerable Moscow correspondent, I.P. Kupriyanov, in a new copy, with which it has now been published. Options will be added later. — M.P.
