Words by Nikolai Nekrasov “Oh, the box is full, full, There are chintz and brocade.
Have pity, my sweetheart, on the good shoulder! Go out, go out into the high rye! I’ll wait there until nightfall, and when I see the black-eyed one, I’ll lay out all the goods. I myself paid considerable prices, Don’t haggle, don’t be stingy: Put your scarlet lips on, Sit closer to your dear one!” Now the foggy night has fallen, the daring fellow is waiting. Chu, here he comes! - the desired one has arrived, the merchant is selling the goods. Katya bargains carefully, afraid to hand over everything. A guy kisses a girl and asks to increase the price. Only deep night knows how they got along. Make way, high rye, keep the secret sacred! Dmitry Hvorostovsky and the Red Banner Song and Dance Ensemble named after. Alexandrova Folk arrangement of the beginning of Nikolai Nekrasov’s poem “Peddlers” (1861). Some options are almost no different from the author's text. Sung to a transformed motif of the Hungarian dance “Csardas”.
Sung by Sergei Lemeshev The poem was deliberately written for the common people.
Nekrasov sent it around the country in the form of a small red book with the price indicated on the back - 3 kopecks per piece (1 kopeck went to the wholesale bookseller, 2 kopecks to the retailers), and it was very cheap. In 1863, the printing of Nekrasov’s “red books” was prohibited by censorship. There are several original melodies and arrangements - apparently, the arrangement by Yakov Prigozhey is the modern canonical melody of the song, dating back to the “Czardash”. She was part of the repertoire of Anastasia Vyaltseva, Varya Panina, Nadezhda Plevitskaya, and Lydia Ruslanova.
At least two more fragments of the poem became songs - “It was good for the little one...” (continuation of the plot of “Oh, the little box is full, full,” music by Yakov Prigozhy, 1888) and “Song of the Wretched Wanderer” (music by N. A. Manykin- Nevstrueva, 1913).

Krobeiniki - Nekrasova Oh, the box is full, full, There are chintz and brocade. Have pity, sweetheart soul, on the well-done shoulder. Go out, go out into the tall rye, so I’ll wait until nightfall. And when I see the black-eyed one, I’ll lay out all the goods. The dark night knew about this, How they got along. Straighten up, tall rye, keep the secret sacred!

Peddlers
PELLERS (To friend Gavril Yakovlevich (peasant of the village of Shoda, Kostroma province)) How I walked with you through the swamps together, You often asked me: What are you scribbling with a pencil? Read it! I don’t want to become famous, I want to please you. I'll be glad if you like it. If you don't like it, I'll keep silent. Don't skimp on the gift! And we'll see you again, we'll have a good glass and go shooting. (N. Nekrasov) (August 23, 1861) (Greshnevo) 1 I don’t want Kumach, I don’t need Chinese. (Song) “Oh, the box is full, full, There are chintz and brocade. Have pity, my sweetheart, on the good shoulder! Go out, go out into the high rye! I’ll wait there until nightfall, and if I see the black-eyed one, I’ll lay out all the goods. The prices I paid were not small, Don’t haggle, don’t be stingy: Put your scarlet lips on, Sit closer to your dear one!” So the foggy night has fallen, the daring fellow is waiting. Chu, here she comes! - the desired one has arrived, A merchant is selling goods. Katya bargains carefully, afraid to hand over everything. A guy kisses a girl and asks to increase the price. Only deep night knows how they got along. Straighten up, tall rye, keep the secret sacred! "Oh! light, light box, the strap does not cut your shoulders! And all the sweetheart took was a Turquoise ring. He gave her a whole piece of chintz, a scarlet ribbon for braids, a belt - a white shirt to gird in the hayfield - the beloved put everything in a box, except for a ring: “I don’t want to go dressed up without a dear friend!” That's it, you fools, young ladies! Didn't she bring a half-glass of sweet vodka herself? But I didn’t take any gifts! So wait! I make an indestructible Promise: The box will be emptied, I will come home on the Intercession of the Intercession, and I will take you, sweetheart soul, to God’s church!” Until the rainy evening, the good fellow runs and catches up with his grumpy comrade near the village. Old Tikhonych swears: “I thought you were gone!” Vanka just grins - I was selling calicoes! 2 The priest’s daughters conceived and conceived (chorus of the village traders) “Hey, Fedorushki! Barbarians! Unlock the chests! Come out to us, little ladies, bring out your nickels!” The wives of their husbands are young women going to the peddlers, Red swan girls are carrying their novelties. And the old women, lo and behold, they dragged themselves in there. “We have rich calicoes, there are calico, calico and corduroy. We have scented soaps - Two hryvnias per piece, We have non-shedding blush - Be young for your penny! You see, the semi-precious stones burn like heat in the ring. There are also cherished favorites - They’ll bewitch anyone!” Zealous discussions began, There was a bazaar in the middle of the village, Women walked around as if drunk, Snatching goods from each other. Old Tikhonych swears so much for every penny that Vanyukha just shudders: “Perish my soul!” So that my eyes would immediately burst, So that I wouldn’t get up from my place, I would fail!..” Look - and they slapped my hands! Well, use it! Not a trader - surprise! It's not too lazy to swear... For a long, long time the whole village was worried on that day. Where some copper pennies Were hidden in skeins, Poor women got it all, They walk around in brand new scarves. Two daughters-in-law for a motley ribbon were scratched into blood. The mother-in-law cackled at Feklushka, the flaming woman. And then the woman scolded the peddlers to her heart’s content: “It’s brought you, swindlers! This is truly a misfortune! You see, you are greedy, like partygoers. I’d like to stake you out of the village!..” The peddlers laughed and went their way. 3 Drink to the dregs, if you want good, but if you don’t want good, don’t drink to the dregs. An old epic They stopped outside the village, Divided the profits, And were baptized in the church, They sighed from the bottom of their hearts. “Great, uncle, you’re bargaining! What's not fun? oh yeah oh!” - “On the day now you won’t spit, How God still forgives: I have defiled my lips - You won’t deceive me, you won’t sell me!” And again the shopkeeper is baptized against the Church of God for a long time. “If all the salesman’s speeches had been in line, they would all have failed long ago. Even a single merchant would have fallen through the damp mother earth... eh-eh!” - “You warmed up Kalistratushka.” - “Well, it’s not a sin to heat him up, He himself removes the cross from the wretched one.” - “Red-haired, wedge-shaped beard.” - “Our business today is not to get much - not these years! The damned war has come and it’s too bad, Where would there be a rich wedding - Tsop into the groom’s soldiers! The Tsar is making a fool - the people are sad! It is draining the Russian treasury, Painting the sea black with blood, sending ships to the bottom. Translation to lead and tin, Yes to the brave fellows. All the people hung their heads, There is a groan throughout the villages. Oh! restless womanish, full of bursts of roaring! Funeral lament It’s too early to sing over the living! You can't stop them! Like an inveterate guy they will take him to the city. The women are dying of grief over this, the men are going to the tavern. Remember the kisser, what he said - the gray-haired scoundrel! “There is no boss higher than me, All the people are my workers! Summer and autumn are being killed, But ask, who are the Orthodox trying for? They don't need anything! All unmercenary, matchmaker, I myself neither sow nor reap, What the earth will bear for them, mother, they bring everything to my treasury!” “The window sills have been sawed through, so where can women dress them up? They're going to town, the robes, They're going to borrow bast shoes! Oh, you potion potion, Yes Chinese teas, Yes tobacco smoking! We are wandering around, not our own people. With all this drinking and smoking you'll break your head. Before the end of the world, you know, the war has begun. The trumpets will sound, the trumpets will sound! The dead will rise! For murderous deeds, how will you have to answer? So we anger the Almighty...” - “Enough, uncle! I'm scared! Can’t I take an extra ruble on the wrong side?..” 4 Ay, lady! lady! (Song) “Hey, you little darling merchants, come and spend the night with us!” Our merchants spent the night and set off again in the morning. They move along little by little, accumulate profits, and do whatever they can to entertain themselves along the way. They walk along the river with the barge haulers. They will start conversations: “Who confused you?” - and they will call them dogs the barge haulers. Serves you right, mockingbirds, Merchants sewn with bast!.. The cucumber growers reached out, “Hey! I spilled the cucumbers!” Vanka suddenly giggles and points at the herd: The old man in the herd is jumping after the Savraska, - he is long, limp, and stands on tiptoe, and beckons with his little basket - No! the damn horse can't be caught! Here it comes, here it stands. He put his head in the basket, and grabbed the old man by the withers! "Hey! just a little more - No! the horse rushed again and, throwing up his hind legs, splashed mud at the old man. “We know there are more common people in the herd than men in the roe deer!” Oh you, steamed and dried! Where can you catch him? I lost my felted boot, do I need to buy a new one?” They sometimes came across military convoys: “Look, the Turks are prisoners, what a motley horde!” Vanka looked sideways at the Turkish mustaches and folded the hem of his scroll into the pig’s ear: “Hey, you infidels, tabashniks, Karachun is coming to you!..” They came across dog hunters: The dogs rushed through the bushes, And the hunter shouted, Blowing the sonorous horns, So that the gray The bunny jumped off and went out into the open field. They stop with the guys: “Whose gentlemen are these?” - “Kashpiryats with Zyuzenyats... Hare! look over there!” The greyhounds were alarmed: “Ay! hey! a-tu!” Well, dogs! Well, destroyers! They picked it up on the fly... We sat on a hillock, had a snack somehow (You won’t eat the stale crust) And again we set off on our way. “Happiness, Tikhonych, is uneven, Today the income is bad.” - “We have met a spiritual face - Sin could not have been worse. Even though I have a Christian soul, I sinned and I put my tail between my legs.” - “Here is a noble estate, Shall we wrap it up?..” - “You, Vanya, are simple! Nowadays, village bar people don’t live in villages, and women’s fashions are like this... where are we going? At least ours: an old woman, with acne on her face, hairless, lean, and dressed like a haystack! He hates to talk to you: You are a man, so you are unclean! And who is seduced by you? The tail is long, but not fluffy! Oh, you arrogant lady, you are ashamed to look at the light! Your braid is fake, There are no teeth, no breasts, Everything is glued and tied up! There is a city like this: Paris. It’s not without reason that it’s said about it: As soon as you stop by, you’ll get away with it. He is famous all over the world, Let the Master go around the world; If you don't like your nose, they can put a new one on you! It’s from these crooks who live in that city that they don’t take anything from the peddlers in the bar these days. Damn the new fashion! And it used to be in the old days: They would bring me to the dining room, I would unwrap all the goods; A beautiful lady will come out, with a real braid, bossy, courteous, children will run out in a crowd, maids, nannies, servants will pour out to the doors. For shirts for Vanyushka And for dresses for her daughters All by herself, with white hands. She takes it slowly, And takes it in whole pieces - That’s how the lady-soul is! “What will you take for earrings with beads? What kind of scarlet brocade? I’ll shake my blond curls, I’ll wring them - what I want! He'll pile up his purchases in a heap, If he'll be disappointed - God be with you!.. And then one day I came across an opportunity Across the river beyond Kostroma. The name day was called - the gentleman was leaving! I hear the drunken guests calling: “Come here, my friend!” I quickly run up to them. “What will you take for the whole box?” I chuckled lightly: “It will be dear, your honor.” Word for word, friends Laughed among themselves Yes, three hundred and retreated, Without looking, behind my box. Then they took the goods out into the girls’ round dance in the middle of the yard and threw them: “Pick up, honest people!” The noble dump began to boil. That’s how the gentlemen were: I landed back home on the ninth day then!” 5 - How many miles are there to Gogulin? - Yes, there are three rounds, but six directly) (Peasant joke) It was good for the little one to pour out kind words, But it’s hard for Katerina to wait for the guy until the Intercession. Often on a lonely night the girl did not sleep for an hour, and how the tall rye stung, shed tears in three streams! I would be exhausted, inconsolable, If it were time to grieve, But it’s a time of suffering, urgent - Ten things must be completed. No matter how often the Moloditsa felt unbearable, the grass fell under the scythe, the rye burned under the sickle. With all her strength she threshed in the mornings, flax spread until the dark night across the dewy meadows. Flax lays down, and a persistent thought lies on the heart: “How will another red girl bewitch the fellow? How will it change? how to woo someone else on the side? And the girl’s heart sank: “Marry me, marry me!” I will not be rude to you or my father-in-law, Father Nikola. I will endure every word from your mother-in-law, your mother. I’m not a noblewoman, I’m not a merchant’s wife, and I have a quiet disposition. I will be a quiet daughter-in-law, a hard-working wife. Don’t bore yourself with work, I don’t have enough strength, I will willingly plow the arable land for my dear one. You live your life walking around with your working wife, driving around the bazaars, having fun, singing songs! And if you come back from trading drunk, I’ll feed you and put you to bed! “Sleep handsome, sleep, blush!” - I won’t say another word. God knows, I wouldn’t get angry: I’d dress up my horse and fall to you: “Kiss me, my friend!..” A girl’s cherished thoughts, Where can I guess you all? It is easier to count the semi-precious stones at the bottom of the sea. The sheep is already getting furry, sensing the approach of cold weather, Katya is flaring up even more... Here comes the holiday Pokrov! “Oh, the box is empty, the box is empty, the wallet is full of money. Wait, wait, sweetheart soul, my dear friend will not deceive you!” Vanka is cheerful. Happily, he goes straight home. Old Tikhonych, yawning, crosses his mouth every now and then. That night he couldn’t sleep, not for a minute. Like a midge has become swollen, God knows why. All such terrible thoughts creep into my head. Are the kabash swindlers Calling to the tavern, Will the soldiers come across - The peddler himself is not himself: “Go with God, marriages!” - And he starts to trot. As if his heels are pierced with needles, he runs. They go to Kostroma along country roads, the path lies through the swamp, sometimes through a nomad, sometimes through fords. “Oh, there’s a proverb: If you go around three miles, it will be six miles straight! Yes, in Truba, in the village, the swindlers Confused the men: “You go, peddlers, straight to Kostroma: There are forty and a half faithful along the mountain side, And twenty-eight along the swamp path.” Here it is! The devil got me wrong - we believed it, but who was counting the miles here?” “The women beat them up,” Vanka said with importance. “Don’t swear!” I myself heard, “The road is straighter here.” - “Did the devil stuff these hummocks and roots? If it's evening time, if you don't get there, you'll go crazy! Our province is good, The city of Kostroma is glorious, Yes, forests, dense forests, Yes, swamps lead to it, Yes, sands, free-flowing sands...” - “Wait, uncle, they’re coming!” 6 Only a fine fellow was ever alive. (Ancient epic) It’s not the tall reeds that sway, It’s not the oak trees that make noise, A brave whistle is heard, The twigs crack under your feet. A dog in a collar appeared, Here is a good fellow: “The way is the way, peddlers!” - “The path is a path, Sagittarius!” -"What are you watching?" - “Didn’t you walk around like I did earlier in Pipe, asking about the road?” - “No, it was your imagination. I haven’t been home for three days, should the forester live at home?” “It seems like the face is familiar,” Vanka whispers to the old man. “What are you whispering?” - “Let us repent, It would be better for us to go uphill. Is that right, lad, are we making our way to Kostroma?” - “We are on the way, I am from Shunya.” - “How far is it from your village?” - “Twelve versts. How much did they divide the profits?” - “If you want to know the whole truth, we bring back all the goods.” The forester will burst out laughing! “You, I see, are the prosecutor! If only all of you, I bet it wouldn’t be soon, you would go, you stout sparrow!” And the forester raised the boxes on the shoulders of the traders. "Oh! Lightweight boxes, They sold everything, do you know? The sparrows pecked and flew off to rest!” - “What, will we get to the village before nightfall?” - “You need to be kind, guy, I’m tired, I don’t have a urine bag - It’s hard to carry a gun. Our work is forced, wander in the forest day and night.” And he took the double-barreled gun off his shoulder and kept it hanging. “Oh, you little darlings! You are too heavy." Our merchants looked sideways at the heavy trunks: How many threads were wound! There are gaps in the finger at the locks. “Really, boy, does it hit?” - “It hits seventy steps.” The village carpenter, apparently, is building a box - a clumsy mess! And the hunter of Christ himself is small in stature and weak in appearance. A forester's clothes are soaked above the waist, a thick beard is matted, a stripe instead of a belt. And there is a dog in a collar, nicknamed the Ghoul. The peddlers laughed: “Oh, you unfortunate hero!..” One hour passes, then another. “Is it far?” - “Close.” - “What are you doing?” They began to laugh at the Kurapatochka River. And the kid cocked his guns. “Ay, chickens! They clicked importantly, At least I’ll kill the bear! Why did you guys keep silent? Let’s binge for courage!” The peddlers had no fun: The skies were already darkening, The swamp was turning blue, The dew was hanging. “You can do it every day, You’d be better off singing it yourself... What are you doing?.. hey! Who are you aiming at? - “So, I’m trying the sight...” It’s about to rain, bulls are walking across the sky, the evening is approaching faster, the men are walking faster. The dog runs sideways, sniffs, and hears game every minute. Chu! How the swashbuckler hoots, Chu! The owl moans as a child. The old man looked furtively: The guy seemed to be shaking. “Has he been diagnosed with a fever?” - “It’s already been beating for weeks, - Get over it!” - And he squinted, as if he was trying to hit Vanka. Old Tikhonych frowned. “What kind of jokes!” he says. “Why joke such jokes, It’s better to actually sing songs.” Wait half a minute - I'll drag it out for you! I knew an old man who could barely see, He walked around with a bag all his life, And he composed a long song about a wandering wanderer. Not from old age, not from hunger, He ended his life in a ditch, But he lived richly from his youth, He was a good man, The inhabitants remember. Yes, God misled him: By mistake, the assessors sent him to prison: They had to call Titus Kuzmich from Spiridov, they peed themselves - from Davydov they took Titushka the weaver! The heartfelt one awaits: “Tomorrow, will I ever return to the free world?” Finally the matter was finished, but he had no solution. “Hey, mistress! there is no urine. You go to the judges again! Very great tears will come out, How will I weave the canvas?” But Stepanidushka had something else on her mind: Since then, Titushka hasn’t seen her in prison. Whether she was caught or abandoned, Titus knew nothing. Twelve years have passed and they summon him to court. The young judge sat in front of the mirror, in vestments. I read the decision to him, ordered him to sign, and released him on all four sides - go to his wife! “Why did you, black crows, peck out my eyes?” Here the judge himself repented: “Forgive me, forgive me lovingly!” You really toiled for nothing, they forgot about you!” Titus - home. The fields are empty, the house is torn to shreds, I sold the roe deer, the harrows, and the clothes and the machines, the wife fell in love with the master, and ran away to Kostroma. Here his dear side got sick of him. Spit! I didn’t figure it out for a long time, I went on a journey without a road. He walked and composed this song, and talked to himself. And the old lady used to say: “The whole song is just two words, But if you sing it, baby, you won’t make it to the end! He will sing this tricky song to the word, Who will pass through the whole earth, baptized Rus', from end to end.” The saint of Christ himself has not finished singing - he is sleeping in eternal sleep. Well! pull up, hunter! Yes, go ahead!
